Heartless are beings who lack hearts. They act on raw instinct that intuitively tells them to consume even more hearts. There are two classification of heartless, Pureblood and Emblem. Purebloods are created by natural circumstances while Emblem are artificially created by a machine and branded with the Heartless sigil.
