"I don't think a bite would be that big a deal for me." Gerik muttered under his breath. He sat down where Ayries pointed and listened to her speak. "West huh? At least that gives me a destination."

"Anyways, as for why I'm looking for it. Well, I'm not looking for it just to have it like anybody else who is looking for it. Where to begin? Well, for starters, I live in a small town south of here. It's at the end of the continent, so we're surrounded by the ocean. Anyways, my town is where he settled down, the person who created God's Gem. When all his travels and heroics and whatnot were all done with, he lived the rest of his life there. And the cool thing is that he's my ancestor. So I figure that, because we are related, God's Gem should be with me, like an heirloom or something."

Something Ayries said before bugged him. "By the way, what do you mean by it being a bad idea to head out west by myself?"

"Well it's not really the ideal thing heading out on your own. Some of the people out that way aren't very friendly. Besides you don't even know some of the main city's you have to pass through in order to find God's Gem. I clearly didn't specify whether it was North West, South West, or just plain West. On top of it all, I don't think you would be able to handle going on some 'journey' all by youself. You couldn't even defend yourself against that little gang of boys this morning. I think that you should have a companion on this quest." Ayries declared with a smirk.

She got up, off the couch, and walked towards an old family portrait. She looked down at all of the smiling faces staring back at her. "You know, my dad was interested in God's Gem. For some odd reason I believe that he thought that it wasn't a myth. He was always intrigued by legends and what not, but he never had a chance to look for this one. When he got sick, it really was the end for him. He could no longer leave his bed and it was as if he died, yet was still attached to this world, you know ?" she uttered mournfully.

"Anyways, enough with me rambling. Will you be staying the night Gerik ?"

    >Desert that whole "I don't think a bite would be that big a deal for me" sounded dirty. I think I'm starting to rub off on you<

    >I didn't mean for it to sound dirty.<

"Hey, I could've defended myself if I needed to. I just want to avoid starting fights." Gerik said to Ayries. "And I'd love to have a companion for this journey. But I don't really know anybody outside of my hometown. I mean, there's you. But you have all this stuff to take care of here and I wouldn't want to take you places that may be dangerous."

"Sorry, I don't know." Gerik muttered. He was quiet, since he wasn't sure if Ayries was asking him an actual question or if he shouldn't have heard her.

"Umm, is it okay for me to stay the night? I wouldn't want to impose or anything, and I can always start moving out west. I mean, I don't really have any plans for things to do. I just kinda go with the flow."

"Yeah it's all right, having company staying over isn't ever a bad thing. I'm feeling nice today so you can sleep in my room and I'll take the couch." Ayries said somewhat cheerfully. Many thoughts kept flooding into her mind, and they were beginning to distract her. My dad would probably want me to go hunt for God' Gem, but I have to work for both Alyss and my own sake. Ugh it's not fair, but maybe I could find a way.

Ayries noticed that she had remained quiet a little too long. " Hey well anyways, we can talk some more tomorrow morning. It's not like you're in a hurry or anything to find this gem; If it even exist. I think before you leave Catara though you should find a companion, it's never a good idea to be traveling all by yourself." she insisted.

"By the way, the bathroom is the first door to the right. You can't miss it."

Ayries walked towards a closet in the hall, grabbed a few blankets and spread them out on the couch.
Who doesn't like sleeping out in the living room every once in a while ?

    >Ooooooooookkkkkkkkkkaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy.........<

"This place seems to be a town for travelers. I suppose I could find somebody." Gerik spoke. "Although I should be fine with my magic. As I travel it should get stronger. And as it gets stronger I shouldn't have to every worry about being hurt. But I suppose I'll look for somebody just because she asked."

Gerik stood up and started to walk over to Ayries' bedroom. "Umm... Are you sure it's okay for me to sleep in your bed? I mean, I'm a guest here. I don't want to impose on you like that. And it feels a little awkward sleeping in somebody else's bed. I'm perfectly fine with sleeping somewhere on your floor. It just seems really strange to be sleeping in your bed when you should be sleeping there."

Ayries glanced over at Gerik, "Well it doesn't matter to me where you go to bed. Honestly, I can sleep in my room if it makes you feel more comfortable. I just thought that it would be more polite than leaving a guest on the floor. The couch is better than the ground though, so I guess you can sleep there if you really want to." she replied.

Ayries placed the few blankets and the warm quilt that she had removed from the closet only a minutes before on the sofa. Sure they were, for the most part, a light pink colour with bits of purple splattered everywhere, but he shouldn't complain. They're just there to keep him warm, right ?

She then made her way to her bedroom, but turned her head towards Gerik one more time, "Anyways, I know it's not extremely late or anything so if you stay up a little longer, don't make too much noise all right. If you need anything, come get me."

Ayries then walked into her bedroom, got into some pajamas and flung herself to her bed.

"Awesome... Pink blankets..." Gerik thought to himself. "Thanks. I'll be sure to remember that." Gerik sat down on the couch. He started thinking about what he was going to do the next day. "Hmm... Well she seems... Kinda cold. Which I suppose is understandable, if she's having to take care of her little sister all by herself at that age. I can't exactly judge, can I? I haven't been thrust into a position like that. She seems to manage though. But on the bright side, tomorrow I head out west. From there hopefully I'll find out something about God's Gem. And she insists I find somebody to travel with. That'll be a fun task, finding somebody. Oh hey, I'm looking for God's Gem. Wanna come help me find it? Although admittedly Ayries seemed to not think I'm crazy. Although her dad did raise her on stories about God's Gem. Oh well, not much use in worrying about it."

As she was laying down in her bed, Ayries couldn't stop thinking about how weird her day had been. First with meeting a stranger, whom is now sleeping on her couch, then telling off a small gang of boys and practically losing her job, and then finally with her little sister missing work because she fell asleep. Plus the matter of God's Gem, she thought. It's been ages since she last heard about this myth and it was kind of random for it to come up all of a sudden. Her dad had really wanted to hunt it down to see if the legend was true, why wasn't she doing the same ? Work always seems to get in the way of everything, and with that thought Ayries shut her eyes because she knew that thinking about it all night wasn't going to solve anything. In fact, it would make things worse because then she would be tired the next morning.

Once she woke up, Ayries moseyed out into the kitchen area and got herself something to eat for breakfast. After she finished her cereal, she looked over and noticed that Gerik was still asleep. Since he probably wanted to take off as early as possible Ayries walked over to the couch and shook his shoulder lightly,

    "Gerik, wake up already."

"Huh? What time is it?" Gerik muttered as he heard a voice telling him to wake up. He sat up, yawned, and rubbed his eyes. "That's right. I'm in Catara, aren't I? I spent the night in the house of a woman who I just met. Hell, that is kinda impressive. Although I suppose it's better that nothing happened. After all, searching for God's Gem means that I'm gonna be alone for a while. Better that I don't get noticed much between cities."

"Thanks. Hey, are you working today? If not, I was wondering if you'd like to hang around for a while longer." Gerik suddenly realized something. "Your sister is here, right? Maybe it would be better for me to leave before she sees me. I wouldn't want to put you in an awkward situation like that."

"Awh, don't worry about Alyss; it won't be awkward for me. We have nothing to hide, afterall, I just let you stay the night. Nothing too big or dramatic." Ayries giggled and moved back into the kitchen area to get a glass of water for herself. She then also grabbed a bowl of cereal for Gerik and made her way back to the couch.

"Here, I figured you'd be hungry." She said while handing him the bowl of cereal. "Anyways, I'm not working tonight, amazingly enough, so we should hang out for a while. When do you have to head out again for your 'grand quest', by the way ? Catara is a nice place and you should see it all before leaving. Besides, I still don't want you to go all by yourself." Ayries said with a hint of concern.

"We can leave the apartment as soon as you're done eating. Don't rush yourself or anything. I'll leave a note on the fridge in case if Alyss suddenly needs me for anything." She then made her way to a small desk, took out a piece of paper and a pen, and began to write a note.

"Thanks." Gerik smiled as he took the bowl. He started quietly eating. "I actually don't have any specific time to leave and continue traveling. The nice thing about this journey is that I can go along at my own pace. It helps for whenever I get into those situations where I arrive in a town a day or so before some big festival. Since I don't have a schedule to keep, I can stay a bit longer to enjoy whatever is going on."

"Ayries is a very strange woman. She can be condescending at times, and then very nice at random other times. I wonder why she's so concerned with me traveling by myself. I've got some feeling that she wants to come with me. Which she'd be more than welcome to, except there's bound to be danger and I wouldn't want her to get harmed. I'm not a skilled enough fighter yet to be able to protect her."

"Well, you're more than welcomed to stay as long as you like." Ayries said grinning. She started to move around; sitting down in a small reclining chair and getting herself a blanket in order to try and get comfy. For some odd reason she was starting to feel cold and was beginning to debate on whether or not she should get a sweater.

"Anyways, since you're eating I might as well tell you a bit about myself." she stated. "As you already know, I live in this apartment with my little sister Alyss. If she's still sleeping I'll be amazed because she was practically out all yesterday. But that's beside the point, I'm also able to cast certain white magic spells since my parents throught that it was essential to learn how to heal others. I work at Sandy's Market to support myself and the job is really starting to fustrate me, but what can I do ? Umm... Yeah... I live a fairly simple life; Nothing important ever happens in Catara. Well there is the Imaginary Festival, but that's only going to be taking place four months from now. So yeah, that's all there really is to know about this area. Catara isn't as lively as some of the bigger cities such as Mesmera and Ryaza but sometimes living in a quiet town can be nice."

She decided to look outside the window and noticed that it was a little cloudy, but overall it seemed like it wasn't going to be a terrible day. "Want to tell me a bit about yourself before we head outside ?"

    >I shouldn't be allowed to make up names >.< <

    >The names are fine.<

"Healing magic? That would be nice to have. At least until my magic is strong enough to stop any damage. Once my magic gets strong enough though, I'll be able to do amazing stuff."

"Well, there isn't really much to say. I grew up in the small costal town of Dell. I'm a single child and have been living on my own for at least a year now. Like I said before, I'm desended from the man who once used God's Gem. Heck, one of the ways that show he's my ancestor is my magic. It's one of the most ancient magics and had come before all other sorts of magic. I'm constantly surrounded by my magic. It forms a shield around me, gives me strength, and... Well I'm certain it could do other things. I jsut haven't trained enough with it for it to grow stronger."

"Why haven't you trained more in order to make it stronger ? I'm sure it would have been helpful for you on this little journey." Ayries asked inquisitively. "Were you thinking about learning as you go instead of getting some elderly man who coughs out his dentures all the time to show you ?" she giggles at the thought. Man, I really have to watch my mouth, Ayries thought.

"Hey Gerik, I'll be back in a second."

She got up from her recliner and decided to check in on Alyss. She had been sleeping for ages and Ayries thought that it would be best if she got up now. When she walked into her little sisters room, Ayries noticed that Alyss was still fast asleep on her bed and it appeared as if she hadn't moved an inch all night. She decided to mosey over quietly to her sisters' side and shook her lightly... "Alyss wake up." Ayries muttered next to her. All Alyss did in response was grumble and turn over on her other side. Ayries was starting to become fustrated. "Alyss wake up already! " Her sister didn't even make a movement this time.

"Okay that's it." Ayries marched out of her sister's room furiously. "Can you believe that she's still asleep ? I don't plan on doing these dishes for her this time. Screw it. Come on Gerik, let's go outside." She was practically half-way out the door of the apartment and was still blowing off steam.

Gerik chuckled at the old man part. "Figured learn as I go is better."

"Umm okay." Gerik said as Ayries darted past him. He quickly sat up and hurried to follow her. "Wow... Never though that anybody could be so pissed off at a sibling over something so trivial as sleeping. He grabbed his sword as he passed it and went out the door after Ayries. "You know, I think I can actually see steam coming out of your head. And if you're so angry at your sister, why don't you pull a prank on her instead of just storming out of your house like that?"

"Come to think of it, I have absolutely no idea about her sister. All I've done is see her sleep. I don't know how she acts or anything. Thinking about it now, it actually makes it a bit difficult to talk about her."

"Play a prank on her ? What, do you think I'm five years old ?!" After she had said this, Ayries noticed that this sounded a little rude, especially since she didn't even know Gerik all that well. In fact she hasn't even known him for an entire day. Ayries turned around to face Gerik and said apologetically, "Sorry about that; I get a little fustrated sometimes."

She paused before adding, "Alyss isn't a terrible person or anything. You don't really know her but she's an all right girl. I'm also not crazy or a mad-ass. Work stresses me out and I'm always stuck doing everything for myself. You don't have any siblings to take care of so you can't sympathize with this, but it get's hard sometimes. I don't like having to earn money to survive, but I've got to do it. Alyss gets lazy sometimes and doesn't ever seem to mind leaving everything all up to me. It's like she envisions me as a robot or something."

Ayries was finally starting to cool down as she continued to slowly walk around outside. "Hey, do you want a grand tour of the town while we're out here ?" A smile had once again spread across her face.

"Then come with me. You and Alyss. If you don't like how things are, come with me and live differently for a while." Gerik thought to himself. Gerik strapped his sword across his back, moving it around to make sure it was on properly and not too tight or loose. "It's okay for you to take your frustration out on me. If it helps, I don't mind."

"Sure, let's go have a tour. I wouldn't mind knowing my way around this place. And, come to think about it, it'd probably make it easier finding you when I return with God's Gem. I can't promise I'll find it anytime soon, but whenever I do I'll make sure to come find you and show you what it really is like."

"I'm not going to take my frustration out on you; you've done nothing wrong to deserve it." Ayries replied in a caring manner. Well, I'm starting to feel terrible about this, she thought.

Ayries began to show Gerik around Catara as if she were a tour guide. "There's nothing too complicated when it comes to this town because there's only two main streets that everyone travels by. There's Water St. which we're currently on and Cromwell which is found on the other side of town. As you can tell, most shops are found near these areas because when people from out of town find their way here, they often end up on these streets. You might have noticed that Sandy's Market, where I work, is only a few blocks away on Water St. There's also no big monuments found here, perhaps because the mayor who governs this town doesn't like spending too much money, but there is a stadium found in the center of Catara where shows often take place." Her mind kept wandering as she was showing Gerik around town as if she wanted to be somewhere else.

I don't want to be in Catara waiting for months to see if he finds God's Gem. I'm sure he'll able to hunt it down by himself, but still, that's not a lot of fun for me, Ayries couldn't help but ponder on this.

"Hey, how would you feel if I tagged a long for this journey. I don't think I could bring Alyss because I couldn't risk her getting injured or anything, but there's enough money in our bank account for her to survive on, and she has a job now too."

"Okay, simple town to get around in. Mayor is a bit of a cheapskate. But still, nice and simple. I really don't have to worry about getting lost here. Awesome." Gerik thought as he looked around. "I've got a hunch though. Ayries isn't being really focused right now. I wonder if it's something about her sister that has her mind elsewhere. I'd like to help, but I don't know what I could possibly do. After all, I only met her yesterday. Jumping into family problems really isn't that great of an idea."

"If you were to come with me? Well... That'd be pretty cool." Gerik answered her. "But I don't know if it would be right for you to come along. For the same reason that you wouldn't have Alyss come along. I wouldn't want you getting hurt as we travel. Magic, especially white magic, only goes so far in protection."

"Yeah, but Alyss is only 16 years old and I'm 18. I'm old enough to be making my own decisions; I've been making huge choices for both of us for the past few years, but I think it's my time to finally do something new and exciting. Shouldn't I be able to partake in something for myself ? Without having to worry about my little sister being hurt ? She'll be fine here, I know it. The people around her are generally friendly and Alyss needs to start taking care of herself every once in a while too." Ayries paused for a few seconds, trying to take in as much air as possible. Man, I can really ramble on sometimes; I'm going to end up passing out one of these days, she thought.

"Anyways, I know I'd do a lot better out there than probably you. Somebody has to make sure that you don't get lost." she jokingly replied. Ayries couldn't help but start laughing, there was something different about Gerik; Perhaps outsiders get the best of everyone. Or maybe it's because he seems a little quiet and isn't ever rude towards me... I could get used to this.
