Ariel was originally meant to be a Princess of Heart, but in order for her to be captured by Maleficent, the story portion of Ursula giving her legs would have had to take place first. It was already too late in production to add this, so the producers chose Alice as a Princess of Heart, which garnered fan outrage, due to not staying true to the Disney Princesses.

Okay. Chernabog is not a Heartless, so why did he attack Sora and company?

Judging by the fact that after you face him you head into that volcano/mountain thing and beat the Heartless inside there then fight Ansem right after that (I think you went through that heart shaped hole thing )... I'm going to say that he attacks Sora because he's protecting Ansem and doesn't want you to destroy his world ^^... Since at the beginnig of this world Donald says that this world will probably be destroyed once they defeat Ansem...

 

Ehehe, I knew someone would say that Chernabog attacked Sora and company in order to protect Ansem and the world. That's not the answer, no. You should watch Night on Bald Mountain, it's an eight minute long animation that first showed Chernabog. You might get some ideas from there. The answer is actually much more simple than your guess.

 

Because Chernabog is EVIL and...uh...wants to make things hard for Sora and co.

I'm pretty sure it was Ansem Report #2 that he mentioned creating a heartless... Since he took the drakness out of a persons heart and says that it created creatures born from darkness... Which were the heartless ^^

Okay in the Ansem reports, Ansem report 1 he's asking questions about darkness and how it is formed
Ansem report 2 he talks about the experiment and how he put the things that completely lost their hearts from this experiment down beneath the castle... And he wonders what these creatures are
In Ansem report 3 he's talking about how the creatures are multiplying under ground, and decides to name them Heartless

So, he creates a heartless in Ansem Report 2 but only names it that in the 3rd...
