    EtherealSummoner Lamentations 3:22-26

(... A pebble thrown at a rocket for it to explode? )

Several minutes later, the lake was getting colder and it was getting foggy. All of a sudden, a gush of water blasted straight into the sky and the vicinity of the area grew cold. The lake turned into ice and the blast of water also turned into ice. Soon, the temperature in the area was dropping and anyone within the vicinity can feel the temperature dropping. Inside the large crystal was the Ice Queen, having her eyes closed.

“Oh yeah,” Vance said. He blushed and rubbed the back of his head, a bit embarrassed by the fact that he hadn’t even given Elza his name. He waited patiently and respectfully while she spoke with her subordinates. Though he didn’t understand most of the terminology she was using for her weaponry, he safely assumed that much of it was advanced technology. The fact that the weapons on SteamGear weren’t doing much damage to the assailants had Vance slightly worried. AS confident as he was in his abilities, he knew it would be more difficult to pull through without reliable and damaging help. But he didn’t show this worry in his posture or expression; he didn’t want to cause Elza any more worry than she was already in, especially seeing that he was there to provide her with support.

When she finally finished talking to her officers, he cut straight to the chase. “My name is Vance Scypa,” he said. “Like I said, I’m here to help you fight off this invasion. That you’ve already prepared the evacuation is a good thing; makes my mission a lot easier. Hopefully you’ve got something in your arsenal that can hold these guys off. But if not, well…” Vance held his hand out in front of him, and in a flash of light, a Keyblade appeared. “I guess you could say that I’m something of a martial artist,” he said with a smirk. “But I’d dare say that my punches would be more than these guys are ready for. Now, my primary directive is to keep you safe. So it’s all your orders.”

Everything happened so fast that, for a moment, Glyde even lost track of everything. All that registered with him was that Exilus had dove into him, knocking him out of the way of the wave of dust and debris. For a few seconds he was stuck on his backside, fighting off the blunt pain of his concrete-laid landing. Despite the shock of the hard landing, he managed to pull himself back onto his feet. “Just like I said,” he said, “they’ll probably have an ambush waiting for us. Who’d have thought they’d have something like THAT though!” He peered around through the haze of debris, and managed to catch a glimpse of Exilus as he shot up through the dusty veil. He heard the orders plainly and clearly: “Try to clear this damn smoke!” It was a simple task, as long as there weren’t any more ambush units on the ground, but that seemed unlikely after what had just happened.

Glyde set off to work on the task of clearing away the smokescreen from the explosion. It would be a tedious process, but he had the means to make it happen; at the very least, he’d be able to clear it way enough to give himself a clear line of site to whoever what shooting through the debris. He cast an Aero spell around himself, which immediately cleared away the smoke in his general vicinity. Of course, that wasn’t enough to satisfy his task. Raising himself in a hover right above the ground, he glided across the street, pushing the smoke along the way off to the side. He continued this path in an upward ascension. With each pass, the smoke from the debris was swept into and carried by the cyclone. Finally, he emerged from the veil within a mass of circulating smoke floating level with the jet soldiers.

While the jet soldiers couldn’t tell that there was anyone in the cloud, Glyde, within the cloud, could sense their active presence. He took several educated shots out of the cloud, and heard three distinct sounds: two screams and an explosion. All three indicated that he had knocked at least that many of the soldiers out of the sky. Then, he redoubled his efforts into another Aero spell and directed it, and the smoke it carried, towards the airborne soldiers to fog their vision.

Not long after Sneadis had fallen into the lake, several units of SteamGear’s regiment had surrounded it, as well as two of the tanks that had been deployed. “Let’s prepare an extraction team,” one of them, a Captain said. “We’ll take ourselves a prisoner while we ca—“ he cut his sentence short as soon as the lake erupted. Around him, he could feel the temperature in the area dropping. He and the other troops looked on anxiously as the lake and the burst of water both froze over. “S-scratch that,” the Captain said. “Looks like this one’s still got fight in them after all.” He turned to the operators of the tanks. “Do you guys have any incendiary rounds?” he asked.

“Of course, Captain,” the operators said in unison.

“Then let loose on this cold bitch,” the Captain said. “We’ll keep her in the kitchen until we can wear her down. Infantry, go get a supply of flamethrowers!”

“Aye Captain!” Several infantrymen went to the backlines for the needed weapons just as the tanks began bombarding the ice formation with super-headed explosive rounds.

Along the streets of the town, the tanks had spread out to keep up the blockade against the Syneptophy, patrolling the city on the look for any of the dangerous enemies, a task in which they were aided by scouts that flanked either side. One such scout spotted the handy work of a young woman with long blonde hair (through binoculars from a distance), and motioned for his tank to stop. “That one over there just took out rockets!” he said, purely flabbergasted by the woman’s feat. “Don’t fire directly at her,” he said to the gunner in the tank. “Use your rounds to knock down the buildings along the street. If nothing else, it’ll block her path long enough for us to get an ambush ready over here.”

A few seconds passed while the tank’s gun aimed down the street. Then… BOOM! Several powerful shots blasted out of the massive barrel, knocking down the buildings along the street. With each shot, the gunner adjusted the aim of the cannon and blasted another building down. Meanwhile, the infantry escorting the tank assembled behind it for cover, anticipating that the woman would make it through the damage. “If you see ANYTHING,” said an officer, “you open fire. Don’t give her a chance to attack.”

  3. “My name is Vance Scypa, like I said, I’m here to help you fight off this invasion. That you’ve already prepared the evacuation is a good thing; makes my mission a lot easier. Hopefully you’ve got something in your arsenal that can hold these guys off. But if not, well…”

"Vance..." Elza repeated quietly as he continued speaking. She said it as if she was recalling the name of a long-lost friend. Then, Vance summoned his Keyblade. Elza's disposition immediately changed. She looked to Vance with a serious expression.

“I guess you could say that I’m something of a martial artist, but I’d dare say that my punches would be more than these guys are ready for. Now, my primary directive is to keep you safe. So it’s all your orders.”

"You're a Keybearer?!" Elza nearly spat, hardly able to contain her surprise. "Why the bloody hell didn't you say so?!" The room suddenly quieted. The soldiers still donning their gear paused and stared at the newcomer with awe. Elza quickly shook her head. "Nevermind that," she said, raising an eyebrow at him. "Keybearer or no, do you seriously think you're going to fight a Syneptophy general bare-handed? Please. All that would do is waste me a resource, and a valuable one at that. No way they're going to take my only Keybearer, so don't go geting yourself killed, understand?" At this point the atmosphere of the room returned to normal as the last of the troops filed out to fill their positions.

"So, someone sent a Keybearer to help us," Elza said while looking over Vance, trying to decide what to have him do. "You're basically a powerful swordsman, right? Well, I guess you belong on the front lines then. Just refer to my previous statement: don't get yourself killed!" She beckoned to Vance. "Here, follow me."

Elza turned about and headed for a hall leading out the back of the room. Continuing down the hall she eventually reached a large, armored door. She typed a code into the keypad and the door zipped open. Quickly stepping through Elza set to scouring the room, taking only a moment before she put a hand into the air, brandishing a circular device triumphantly. She brought it to Vance and showed him the device, a small disk-like object with a blue light resonating in the middle of it.

"It's a shield generator," Elza said proudly. "One of our finest technologies. This shielding will protect you from anything from lasers to slugs, and even some explosives. Can't say how it'll react to magic though, never had the proper tools to test it." Without waiting for Vance to accept, she slapped the device over the armor on his chest, which it immediately synchronized with, protracting four magnetic metal legs to keep itself in place. A dull blue light then spread itself around Vance, that, while nearly invisible to Vance, signified an active shielding system.

"Good!" Elza said with a smile. Now, I'll send you the coordina--Oh, wait, you don't have an arm terminal..." Elza paused for a moment and bit her thumb in thought. She then looked up and called out to one of the troops stationed to protect the Stronghold. "Hey, you! Private Rex!" An average-looking soldier turned to face them, then slowly jogged over to Elza.

"Yes Ma'am, what can I do for you?"

"Escort Mr. Scypa to the frontlines; the blockade will do. He's going to go punch out some Syns." The soldier looked to Vance incredulously, then back to Elza with a salute.

    "Yes Ma'am, right away!"

(Wayward, take control of this Soldier and have him lead the way to the line of tanks.)

    -------------------

As Exilus evaded the enemy soldiers, he heard a cackle of communication in his earpiece.

"Uh, admiral, I'm going to be a little late rejoining you. But take note of the ships overhead - they're loaded with explosives and headed for the stronghold."

Exilus looked to the sky and was delighted to see a trio of airships headed toward the center of the town. Exilus laughed out loud, cackling with delight over the impending destruction. The laughter could surely be heard over the communicator.

"Well done, Kurao! You never fail to disappoint me!" He said with delight before clicking off his communicator.

Exilus sped around the jetsoldiers, keeping out of their line of fire and playing a game of cat and mouse with them. He dashed forward with his Glider and immediately made a hard u-turn, facing the jetsoldiers. He was greeted with the pleasant sight of three troops being shot out of the sky by magical blasts. Exilus smirked. The Keybearer is doing well, he thought. Seeing the cloud of dust blow forward to engulf the remaining jetsoldiers, Exilus dove under it, spotting Glyde again and coming to rest beside him on his Glider.

"Good work. If we're quick, we can progress without the jetsoldiers catching on. Let's go!" Exilus sped forward with his Glider, hardly waiting for Glide to catch up. He zipped in between a couple buildings until, a couple blocks ahead of him, he could make out a line of tanks. Exilus abruptly stopped and doubled back, making sure he hadn't yet been spotted. He rendezvoused with Glyde wearing a rather large smile.

"Alright, the plan is this," Exilus began to explain. "See those ships up there?" He pointed to the sky. "They're full of explosives. I'm going to send one into that line of tanks. If everything goes as I suspect, it will cause a delightful amount of destruction and chaos, allowing us to pass through to the Stronghold unhindered." Exilus flicked the switch on his communicator, reopening the connection to Kurao. "Ahoy, Captain Teri! Command one of those ships to ram the line of tanks protecting the Stronghold! We'll show them how the Syneptophy punches through armor!"

Exilus turned back to Glyde, still smiling.

"You'll want to find some cover."

"Will-do, admi-WAUGH!!!" Kurao shrieked, nearly pegged by another tank round. He would never be able to get close enough to the tank if he continued in his strength form, so he began shifting while a little watch with a shell on his wrist popped open to reveal a snail.

"Bear down twenty degr-AIEEEeees, match- DAMN- descent to the blo-AUGH- the blockade! And I want i- WOAH! DO IT NOW! Wait, what do you mean there's nobody piloting?" He barked into the device, dodging shots while his fur, bone, and muscle shifted to match the stature of a pantheric assassin. Midnight fur shimmered in the sun, but a quick roll into the shadow caused him to disappear altogether. The scout beside the tank was simply baffled. How could a man disappear like that, he would wonder. He wouldn't be wondering long, as the cat-man reappeared coming out of the shadow besides the tank, climbing up and opening the hatch to get inside. The vehicle shook for a moment, but was still once again. The scout, curious as to the shaking, hopped up - and was promptly knocked out by a swiveling turret.

"Goodnews, badnews time, admiral. Bad news is, the ships have nobody on them. Good news is, I have a tank."

The controls were remarkably simple. one wheel with a lever sticking out of it could be rolled to aim upwards and downwards. A second wheel turned the turret around. A separate set of controls were marked with B and F, presumably to drive the tank in different directions. Not at all that different from some of the vehicles the Navy employed against his crew back in the Grand Line. That was a story for another time, as Teri spent his time wheeling the turret to aim at one of the sailing ships after pulling out into a main road that stared directly down to the stronghold - with the blockade in sight.

"Alright, let's see if what that damn cannoneer taught me was useful,"He growled, aiming slightly in front of one of the main engines for the ship. He fired, pegging it just barely and denting it, causing the ship to take a downward pitch.

    "Score!"

"The newer models sound fine to me. My aura could probably mimic the abilities of the older models anyway," Tsubasa said. "Anyway! Please, take us to the training room!"

    ---

Caitlin swore under her breath as shots fired and the city collapsed around her. She ran out of the path of a building just before it plummeted into the ground she'd been standing on and carried on sprinting, narrowly avoiding death multiple times. She came to a halt, though, in front of a huge pile of rubble which blocked her path. She could simply punch a hole in the wall and continue her pursuit, but she had no doubt that the tanks would be waiting to fire if they saw anything.

She realised that she could use that to her advantage. After burying her daggers in her pockets, she picked up a piece of a fallen building roughly a meter tall and lobbed it over the mound of rubble, expecting the tanks to fire at it and reveal their location. Instead, the entire wall was shot down, leaving Caitlin completely vulnerable and visible. They had obviously had time to call in more tanks and prepare an ambush. "There are three of them now? I really should've come up with a damn backup plan!" The tank's shots reloaded quickly and they each fired once again, timing each shot so that she didn't have a second to attack.

"Okay, so let's work on that backup plan!" she said while dodging deadly shots. "First course of action: get within thirty metres of the tanks!" After every evasion, she took a step forward, slowly nearing her enemies. She wouldn't need a chance to attack as long as the tanks were in her range. Eventually, she estimated that she was within range. She dug a dagger out of her pockets. "Step two!" A tank fired at her, and whilst dodging a shot, she swiped the air with the dagger, aiming at a soldier manning one of the tanks. She didn't have time to grin as the soldier screamed, because the remaining soldiers continued firing at her.

"Step three: rinse and repeat step two!" Caitlin did so and soon enough, the soldiers manning all three tanks were dead. "These things are getting more and more powerful..." she heaved between deep, ragged breaths. A jarring thought came to her; they would most certainly send reinforcements! On instinct, she frantically scaled the building nearest to her, crouching when she reached the top. Below her, she could see the tanks, dead soldiers atop them. From a distance, the soldiers could pass as alive.

Yet another idea sprung to her mind. If these tanks were anything like other tanks she'd seen, then she could control them from a distance by projecting her hand movements. She tested it out, moving her hand in every direction as she attempted to find the tank's control panel. Just as she started to get frustrated, she got a response out of the tank; it began to move slowly. Caitlin stopped it when it faced the general direction of the Stronghold. "Found it, at last!" She repeated on the other two tanks. She then sent each forward, toward the Stronghold, in a straight line. With any luck, all three of the tanks would reach the Stronghold.

Then, she stealthily jumped from building to building, following the tanks to track their progress from a safe distance. She paused briefly to turn on her communicator. "Good news, my lord! I've sent three tanks into the Stronghold. Should I wait here and send more?"

The ice formation that encased the lake and the Ice Queen herself was slowly falling, crumbling by the force of the attacks launched on it. The Ice Queen is unconscious at that time as she is resting and the ice fell down into the lake. Several minutes later, all that was left was a huge chunk of ice that encased her and it fell, floating towards land at the enemy frontline.

    "Send the city to hell."

His small army htat he summoned from his fiery realm ran towards the city, cackling as they threw fire balls and capturing any other surviving citizens to be a part of his army. As Seraphin walked away, believing that his army will be able to take care of the entrance, he decided to make contact. He shot conjured up a white fire ball and used both of his hands to shoot it up and create a mark of a dragon to show his position and to see if everyone else is doing alright. The fiery dragon then breathed will o' whisps to each of his allies and it spoke to them once it reached them.

"City close to destruction. What is your progress... and how come Snaedis isn't responding?"

The Spartan took the group into a series of hallways, until they reached the door to the training room. He pulled off his right glove and placed his hand onto the scanner. After a been, the old and outline glowed green, with the words ACCESS ALLOWED on the top in green text. He slipped the armored glove back on, and watched the door slid open.

"Follow me," Zac said as he gestured them to follow. The room was big, with a window up high at the wall opposite of the one with the door and access pad. On the ceiling was some sort of machine, designed to create a virtual world, but that's not what Zac had in mind. He talked on the radio headset he had on and communicated with the control room,

"Activate Training Program Alpha, change amo from bullets to quick hardening paint," Zac said,

    ~Yes Spartan Z-107~

In a few seconds, several panels to the wall opposite of then opened up to reveal several turrets that looked to be controlled from the control room above them,

"Lets test your shielding abilities," Zac said.

Before Vance was able to say or do anything more, Elza was on a breakaway of a rant at him. Well, not really a rant as much as a briefing, though she sounded a bit annoyed for the first half of it, which gathered the unwanted attention of the remaining soldiers. Still, Vance said nothing and didn't try to shrug off any of what Elza was putting on him; she was in charge, and he had his orders to follow her. As unnecessary as he found it, he allowed her to rig him with one of her world's shield generators. Though once it was on, he saw that it would come in handy to have a persistent full shield.

He then looked to "Private Rex," a younger looking soldier, not much older than he was. He returned the Nan's expression, almost daring him to say something. However the private was compliant with Elza's orders and face a quick salute before turning to Vance.

"Follow me," be said firmly, as though he were suddenly an officer.

"Don't worry about me," Vance said to Elza. I know how to take care of myself. They'll be lucky if they can even land a hit on me."

"Alright that's enough," the private said. "Now kindly follow me. The sooner we get you in the front lines the better."

"Right." Vance turned back around and followed Rex out of the meeting hall. The two walked a rather short distance, Vance backtracking his steps the way he had entered. Though many of the soldiers had filed out of the meeting hall, the stronghold still bustled with the scurrying of militant feet about its halls; Vance guessed that a great deal of care was being taken to defend the stronghold in case the outer defenses fell.

The outside of the stronghold was even busier than the inside. Every inch of the former government building was being laced with last minute weaponry and manned by what seemed to be every last soldier that wasn't already out fighting. Makeshift barriers and trenches dug out of the city streets were flooded with both troops and mounted weaponry. "How many strong is your army?" Vance asked Rex.

"I don't know exactly," the private responded. "I am just a private. Last I knew though, we had about two or three thousand. Everyone from the city that's capable of fighting has taken up arms. All men of course, save for Elza. She forbid any other women from aiding on the battlefield. I guess she wants to keep the future assured, you know?"

"Yeah. I get it," Vance said. Three thousand strong and they still need an ace like me in the hole? Either this resistance is ill-equipped, or these Syneptophy are some powerful folks. Either way, these people need me, and I need to get the job done. Let's see how ready this Exilus guy fares against a Keybearer.

"Alright, we're here," Rex said at last. They were standing just behind a barrier that formed the outermost edge of the circular court in which the stronghold stood. The stronghold was nearly one hundred yards behind them, and several other barriers and artillery batteries stood between it and the outer one. "The front lines. And this is the Colonel."

A middle-aged man with crewcut hair and a strict drill sergeant expression stepped forward. "Yes. Mr. Scypa. I've received word from HQ that you were on your way. As Rex accurately pointed out, this is our frontline of defense, at least, it is now that the inner city has been breached. We're doubling up on our efforts here as we speak. Hopefully we can slow these guys down long enough for our final preparations to come to fruition. You'll be joining with our close-quarters team for this operation. While our gunners provide cover fire, you'll charge the enemy's assault and keep them occupied. Understood?"

"Understood Colonel." Vance smiled half-heartedly, and grimaced as he looked a the ragtag looking troops that formed the close-quarters team. "For the Academy," he muttered.

    -/-

Glyde pushed off, gliding closely behind Exilus, and dropped down onto the street next to him. He took note of the scene in the distance, the line of tanks prepared to defend the stronghold. "Wasn't quite up for this kind of battle," he admitted quietly. Still, he latched on to Exilus' instructions and looked towards the ships overhead. "Good plan," he said as he took cover behind a building. "I suppose their stronghold must be that way then, seeing as they've to their artillery mounted. If you give me the time and cover I can get into a good position. Elza will be bound to come our soon enough if she's not already. I can take care of her."

    -/-

The C.O. of waterfront unit peered through his binoculars as the smoke cleared from the bombing. As the results became clear, he cracked a grin. The ice woman was frozen, and for the moment, incapacitated. And the officer knew when to take advantage of a situation. He called his lieutenants to him. "I want an extraction team out there," he barked. "I want that woman in custody. Keep her nice and warm. It'll help for us to have a prisoner for once."

((Reprise can do what they like on Caitlin's end. I don't have much of anything to say to that)).

  9. "Goodnews, badnews time, admiral. Bad news is, the ships have nobody on them. Good news is, I have a tank."

"Do what you must, general," Exilus said with a slight chuckle. He trusted Kurao but still watched the sky tentatively.

"I suppose their stronghold must be that way then, seeing as they've to their artillery mounted. If you give me the time and cover I can get into a good position. Elza will be bound to come our soon enough if she's not already. I can take care of her."

Exilus shot a menacing look down at Glyde.

"First of all," Exilus began. "Elza is mine. I will be the one to kill her. Second, time is something we won't have. Cover, on the other hand, may be possible. See all of these destroyed buildings and piles of rubble? Try to find a place to provide me some cover fire when I hit the front lines." Exilus looked back to the airship, which he saw was not moving. He was about to call Kurao when he saw a tank shot fly into the front part of the airship's hull. Exilus smirked, knowing the chaos that would commence. The ship tipped downward and slowly barreled toward the ground. It was then that Exilus realized there was a slight flaw in his plan. The soldiers, sure to notice the ship, might have some way of destroying it before it hit them. While the debris would still be deadly, it was the fiery impact of the explosives that Exilus wanted the rebels to feel.

"Glyde. I'm going in," Exilus stated firmly. "This is going to take a lot of my energy, so I need you to pick off as many pests around me as you can. Soldiers, tanks, anything, just keep the area around me clear. Do not fail me." Exilus sped toward the front line, using bits of cover to keep himself hidden until about halfway there. At that point, he lowered his altitude, jumped off of his Glider and in one smooth motion turned the vehicle back into his Keyblade, grasped it, and summoned his other Keyblade with a backward spin of the wrist.

As Exilus walked toward the line of tanks, a pool of shadows crept steadily out from his feet. Heartless began to pull themselves out of the shady soup, materializing into a group Soldiers that would act as laser fodder. Half of the tank cannons in the line swiveled to target him, and a contingent of soldiers came to meet him in combat.

Exilus threw both of his Keyblades, hard, making them fly far outward in long arcs. They connected with the barrels of two different tanks, slicing them in two and rendering the cannons much less effective, if not completely useless. While the Keyblades were out, Exilus croned his hands together at his side. Thin lines of black electricity cackled through his hands as tendrils of darkness came up from the pool of shadow, now up to Exilus's ankles, and began to form and condense in the area in between his crooked hands, taking the shape of a large artillery round. Exilus then pointed at a cluster of tanks that were still targeting the airship. The round of darkness shot forward, through the group of soldiers now firing at the Heartless, and slammed into one of the tanks. A loud booming sound erupted and the ground violently shook as the explosion of darkness and sharp metal debris engulfed the cluster of tanks Exilus had targeted.

As Exilus had been attacking, the tanks fired a round of shots at him, two of which were only a second away from hitting him. His remaining Soldier Heartless obediently jumped into the way of one, making it detonate at a relatively safe distance, though one deadly missile still barreled toward him. In a purely instinctual reaction, Exilus waved a hand in front of himself and summoned a Corridor of Darkness; The tank round barreled through the shadowy portal and into some unknown district of the town, safely destroying some unknown building instead of Exilus.

Having a good number of their tanks that were targeting the airship destroyed, the soldiers began to panic and retreat. His work done, Exilus turned, summoned his Glider, and jumped onto it, flying at full speed away from the impending explosion. Seconds later an enormous wave of destructive force erupted as the airship slammed into the ground, followed by an even more devastating explosion from the materials within that destroyed a huge area around the ship. The wave of force had caught Exilus and he was sent flying over his Glider, aimed at the debris-littered street below. He covered his face and braced himself, trying his best to roll upon landing; however, the impact was too great and his roll was turned into a full-speed tumble, only ending when Exilus slammed through the wall of a building and into it’s destroyed main room.

Taking a few moments to recuperate, Exilus flipped himself onto his stomach, coughing from the clouds of dust in the air. Slowly, he stood, assessing his injuries as he went. Nothing was broken, thankfully; his incredible bulk and his armor made sure of that, though his armor was now ruined. Exilus walked out of the building, using the hole that he had made. He was met with a sea of rubble and thick dust clouds in the air, so he summoned his Glider and flew above the dust to try to assess the damage. Thankfully, the winds were strong enough allow Exilus to see the large field of rubble created by the explosion. Many of the Stronghold’s outer defenses were destroyed. By some miraculous chance, Exilus found his communicator was unharmed enough to use. He clicked it on and turned to Kurao’s channel.

“Very nice job, Captain Kurao,” Exilus spoke. “The damage up here is sizable. Now rendezvous in front of the Stronghold, we’re making the final push.” Exilus looked around, trying to spot his indentured Keybearer. He flew a bit lower and began perusing the rubble. “Glide! You still alive?!” He called out, trying to project his voice through the area. He paused for a moment and turned his comm to the general channel, meaning all of his team would hear him speak.

“Everyone, rendezvous in front of the Stronghold!” Exilus said into the communicator. Thinking for a moment, he added, “Has anyone seen Snaedis?! She disappeared after we breached the walls. Kurao, weren’t you with her?” Exilus slowly flew over to the rendezvous point, keeping an eye out for Glyde.

    -------------------

Elza was overseeing the final stages of the operation from within the Stronghold, making sure everything and everyone was in place. They were ready; at the perfect time, their ship would take off, lifting the whole stronghold off of the ground and sending them safely through a one-way interdimensional portal. Elza was thankful that her people logically decided to choose their lives over their world, though the decision laid heavily on everyone, her most of all. She hated that she was so powerless that all she could do was run. She took solace only in the fact that everyone would be saved. She was still deciding where they would run to. Steamgear had made a number of extra-dimensional allies in the past years, so they had a couple places they could turn to, but they yearned for a place that they could call their own.

Elza was constantly receiving audio and video feed from the battle; each soldier’s helmet had a side-mounted camera that Elza could tune in to if necessary. She had eyes on the frontline, the outer districts, and even Sovereign Lake, giving orders when necessary and watching over her troops from a relatively safe position, allowing her to remain calm and calculated. As she had expected, the tanks were holding well on most fronts and so the 01-suits had come back to the Stronghold and were dismounted.

However, something soon shattered this calmness. Reports came from the frontlines of a diving airship headed straight for their forward defenses, specifically toward the line of armor they were using to harass and keep away the Syneptophy. Elza frantically tried to give them advice, initially commanding them to blast it out of the sky. However, that was before Exilus had shown up in their video feed. In a matter of moments, the leader of the Syneptophy had disabled half a dozen tanks. Elza intelligently ordered the troops to retreat from the frontlines at a fairly early point, allowing most of them to avoid death when the powerful explosive shockwave shook the city. Elza turned her communicator to go through any and all allied frequencies that it could, trying to get the attention of as many survivors as possible.

“Everyone, this is Commander Elza. I’m giving the order to retreat. Head to the Stronghold and get inside. We’re going to be taking off in 00:15. I repeat...” As she spoke, she took a set of staircases downward, into the iron belly of the Stronghold. She didn’t actually plan to leave until all the survivors were on board, but she felt like that short time limit would encourage a hasty retreat. Once Elza descended into the bottom levels, she ended up in a room reminiscent of a pilot’s cabin, filled with technicians and co-pilots as well as an engineer or two. She immediately went to preparing the ship to launch, hoping that not too many good souls died to the disease that was the Syneptophy.

((To be honest I'm not 100% sure how Marie's powers are supposed to work. So I'll just be guessing for now)).

Marie followed Zac's lead into the training room. Looking around at the features, she gave a silent and casual nod; it was, more or less, what she'd have expected based on the rest of the ship. "Just like home," she said, in reference to the gun batteries on the opposite walls. She was back in a familiar routine of being shot at to gauge her ability to block against attacks, one of the first of her combat training procedures.

"Well I'm already set," she said to Zac. No noticeable difference was evident by looking at her, but a protective field of energy had formed around her body. "I should be able to take dry paint alright though, unless these guns shoot something fierce."

    -/-

Glyde returned Exilus' glare with one of his own, which, though unnoticed seemed the simply say "chill out." He heaved a slight sigh and responded, "you're the boss," before sprinting in Exilus's wake towards a pile of rubble that created a bunker from which he'd be able to provide cover.

By the time he was set to start shooting, Exilus was already in the midst of his assault on the front lines. A squad of tanks sat debilitated just behind the barriers, and many of the operators were ready fleeing their useless shells of weapons. The infantry on the other hand were more bold than to run at the defeat of their tanks. Glyde, propped up against a flat slab of stone and brick, leveled off his Keyblade and began shooting towards the back ends of the enemy's charge. One, two, three, four, five... Soon, about ten soldiers had dropped, unnoticed by their comrades in the commotion of Exilus' assault.

Knowing that it would be a safety hazard to stay propped in the same place for long, Glyde picked himself up, and slipped into an alley between two ruined sets of buildings, and quickly made his way to an upper level of one nearest the fighting. From a narrow window frame, he continued his barrage against the SteamGear armies... Until he noticed an airship pummeling down from the sky into a row of artillery.

He had little time to react, and simply threw himself onto the floor beneath the window. The the resulting shockwave was powerful, he was perched far enough away from the epicenter of the blast that his building didn't buckle under the force. Save for the small bits of shrapnel flying in through the window, he was barely touched by the explosion.

Shaken, but otherwise unharmed, Glyde pulled himself back to his feet and shook the top layer of dust from his coat. He looked out the window to find that the explosion left another covering of dust and debris in the air. "Yeah. I'm still alive," he said, responding to Exilus. "But don't expect to see me. I can't pass up an opportunity to work under this kind of cover." He found a wide window nearby, and floated out, keeping the dust out of his path with an Aero spell.

With each breath in, Vance heaved out with a cough of chalky dust. He hadn't caught what had happened to cause the blast, as he had been floored by the Colonel only seconds before it happened. His face full of dirt and stone shards, he looked up over the still-standing barricade; nothing but a cloud of debris looked back from the other side, silence being all that could be heard.

That was, until the voice Private Rex called to him from a nearby barricade. "Scypa! You alright?"

"Yeah. I'm good. I've been better but I'm good."

"Good," said the Colonel. "Because our reports say that Exilus has just broken the outer ring of our front lines. We're the last line of defense, and he's headed straight for us. Lady Elza has called for a retreat, but we're going to stay behind for now and make sure she gets as many people back to HQ as she can."

"And where do I fit into this?" Vance asked.

"You will engage against Exilus. Surely one such as yourself will be able to hold him off long enough, with our help of course. We'll keep it between the two of you."

"So you're sending the newbie to the head of the enemy pack? Good plan," Vance remarked. "I've got this then. Don't worry." He vaulted over the barricade and began to move away from the defensive line. A short distance out, he came face-to-face with a man the might have intimidated him... Several years ago. A powerful looking figure whose features screamed "darkness" from every shred of skin. "I take it you're the one they call Exilus?" He said. "You look the part." Despite that he was currently unarmed, Vance put on his toughest and most in-control demeanor.

  11. Tsubasa followed his new companions down a series of winding, metallic corridors. He made a point to be observant of the area around him; each time they passed a room, Tsubasa would peek in for just a second and catch a glimpse of an amazing technology. Yep, that settles it, Tsubasa thought assuredly. This place is far more advanced than the Earth I know. He was excited about the possibilities that awaited him in this futuristic spaceship. Finally, the three of them reached a large metal door that Zac opened via a control pad. As they stepped inside, Tsubasa became a bit confused. The room was completely empty, nothing like the dojos back in Japan where he learned his sword skills. Tsubasa was just about to say something when Zac spoke up:

"Activate Training Program Alpha, change amo from bullets to quick hardening paint,"

A robotic voice chimed a response and panels began to move along the far wall, revealing a set of turrets aimed directly at the three of them.

"Quick-hardening paint...?" Tsubasa mused. "So, paintballs? This will be easy." Tsubasa smirked and got into position. He extended both of his arms, palms pointed outward at a 45 degree angle, one hand at chest level and the other closer to his waist. He then gave his aura a gentle push. Starting at his palms, a light-blue translucent sphere began to form itself around Tsubasa. When the Defense Sphere was finished, he turned and nodded to Zac.

    "Ready when you are."

    -------------------

Kurao popped his head out of the top of the tank in order to watch his handiwork as the airship slowly plummeted out of the sky. He became a bit worried when several tank rounds where fired at it from what looked like the front lines, but only a single volley was fired. Kurao was curious what happened, but at the same time didn't really care, more focused on the fact that the airship would reach the ground as planned. Hoping he was far enough away from the impact zone to not be in danger, Kurao gripped the tank and braced himself as the airship fell below the line of buildings between him and the front line.

A couple seconds of silence (though it felt like an hour to the rowdy cat-man), and then... a thunderous crash and a long, deep tremor. Kurao held to the tank. He was indeed far enough to be out of danger, but the tremors still reached him, rendering him immobile for a moment. After most of the rumbling had ceased, Kurao cracked a devilish smile.

"Now that's what I call shootin'!" Kurao exclaimed. "I'll hafta remember to reward that cannoneer... which one was it again?" Kurao continued to grumble to himself as he plopped back into the belly of the tank. Just as he was about to close the hatch, a glowing, circular device banked off of the door and into the tank's compartment; it didn't take more than a fraction of a second for Kurao to realize it was an explosive. "Shit!!" Kurao yelled as he used his powerful legs to propel himself out of the tank with a leap; however, the grenade was placed too well, and Kurao wasn't able to react quite fast enough; while he made it out of the tank, the shock of the explosion still caught him and it sent him flipping, head over foot, through the wall of a nearby building.

Dazed for a moment, the pirate captain heard the sound of footsteps approaching him. He snapped out of his confusion and back-rolled onto his feet, switching forms mid-roll so that by the end he had turned from a panther to a rippling lion. He could see lines of light breaking through the small dust cloud created by his entrance. Not wasting any time, Kurao lept through the dust and surprised the group of spec-ops soldiers on the other side. As he broke the cloud, he counted four soldiers in his immediate vicinity, and two more by the tank. Kurao whipped out his powerful arms and carved his claws into two of the soldiers in the path of his leap, rending through their armor. Thick ribbons of blood danced in the air where the lion was just a moment ago.

Kurao landed in a full, four-legged sprint, aimed at the two soldiers near the tank. Taking advantage of the fact that the other soldiers were most likely in shock from his display, the pirate captain pounced at one of the soldiers, taking him down to the ground and knocking him out before Kurao could even punch him.

"What? That was way to easy! Wake up and let me hit-- Agh!" Kurao grunted in pain as two bolts from the other soldiers' laser rifles grazed his shoulder and his back. He dashed forward, part-way through the movement transforming, yet again, from a lion into a cheetah. Taking huge and powerful bounds with his feline legs, Kurao sped away from the group. As he ran, a crackle from his communicator meant that Exilus was about to speak.

“Very nice job, Captain Kurao. The damage up here is sizable. Now rendezvous in front of the Stronghold, we’re making the final push.”

"Not a problem, Admiral," Kurao said with a chuckle. "I just love wasting my ships. I think I've earned some paid vacation for this!" He changed his trajectory slightly so that he was headed for the front lines. As he ran, Exilus made another announcement, this time to the whole group.

“Everyone, rendezvous in front of the Stronghold! ...Has anyone seen Snaedis?! She disappeared after we breached the walls. Kurao, weren’t you with her?”

"Were being the key word there, Admiral," Kurao noted. "She split when we went after the cannons. If you don't mind, I'd rather not baby-sit her, either. Snae-girls an adult, she can take care of herself." As he finished speaking, Kurao arrived at a street atop a low hill overlooking the remains of the front line. The area was dusty from the crash, making Kurao sneeze. He was about to find somewhere nicer to breathe when he spotted Exilus and and unknown kid, no older than a teenager, walking up to him.

"What the hell is that brat doin'...?" Kurao wondered, more amused than anything. "He's gonna get ripped to shreds!" Kurao watched, arms crossed, curious as to what would happen. He was ready to pounce in and help Exilus, but he doubted that would be necessary.

    -------------------

"Yeah. I'm still alive, but don't expect to see me. I can't pass up an opportunity to work under this kind of cover."

Exilus laughed. He then clicked his communicator to Glyde's frequency so they could speak as he flew away.

"Good point," Exilus said. Then he added, "you did well back there. My frontal assault might not have been possible without your cover. Keep it up. We're on the final stretch."

"Were being the key word there. She split when we went after the cannons. If you don't mind, I'd rather not baby-sit her, either. Snae-girls an adult, she can take care of herself."

"Hmph," Exilus scoffed. "What is that girl doing...? It's not like her to go missing." After a moment of thought, Exilus decided to wait until after the raid to search for her. She was a competent general, as Kurao said. She didn't need to be babysat.

Exilus re-entered the dusty area, getting off of his glider and unsummoning it. He walked forward, slowly and purposefully, a hulking man with a cloak draped loosely behind his large, spiked armor. Exilus could see the group of tanks he had destroyed and smirked. It was a close call, but he had never doubted himself. As he steadily approached the barricade through the thin smoke, he saw the silhouette of a person approaching him. This figure was of average height, though that was more than half a foot shorter than Exilus. As the figure came more into view, it could be distinguished as a man. The man was not bulky, but very fit, and gave off an air of arrogance to Exilus, making him grimace in disgust.

"I take it you're the one they call Exilus? You look the part."

Returning the unknown man's glare with one of pure, cold hatred, Exilus clicked on his communicator to Glyde's channel.

"Glyde, shoot this insect. It doesn't deserve to be squashed by me."

"You better," Zac said, "This paint can harden a Spartan's armor and make them frozen, not to mention it hurts like a bitch, even WITH armor. Start out at 20% speed,"

The turrets barrels began to turn and spin, and in an instant, pink paint balls started to fly towards the group. They were coming in fast, but it only seemed to be one shot every seven seconds.

    ----------------------------------

"Understood," Caitlan said, hearing Exilus's orders, and headed towards the stronghold where the others were gathering to.

”Twenty percent speed? About how fast will that b—“

    BAM!

The first bullet was fired out of the turret towards her and her comrades. Rather, it was a paint ball, hardened to the point of solidarity that found its way through Marie’s “comfort zone.” The first round caught the Aura-user a bit by surprise, and nicked her on the shoulder as she made a last minute attempt to evade the inevitable. “OK. So that was twenty percent speed. Good, now I know that. And now you know that I can get my ass out of the way of things just fine too. Anyways, let’s see the next round!” A second later, Marie was preparing her shielding effect to stave away the next round of lead-based projectiles.

    BAM!

The second round bolted out of its barrel, bearing straight in on Marie’s chest. This time, she was ready though. Her Aura’s shield moved around and about with a force to match and outdo the bullet; a sheer force of controlled energy pushing against the momentum of the projectile, marked by a momentary flash of mild light. Marie’s eyes came down upon the speeding bullet as the effects of her Aura slowed its progress. In her mind, she was imagining a slow motion scene of the bullet striking in towards her heart, falling just short of its destination and glancing off of her with no harm done.

As it so happened, that was precisely what had happened, albeit at a significantly faster pace. “Well that was fun. Got any more?”

Glyde? Did he just say Glyde? Could it be…?

Vance shook his head at his own thought; for certain, he wasn’t hearing something right, or just not interpreting it correctly. The name “Glyde” was familiar to him, but there had to be millions of Glydes in all of the infinite realities that abounded beyond his own. He put his focus back on the man before him, Exius. He was positive that it was the man he was looking for, the one who had caused the entire city to crumble with just a few elite warriors. He shot a harsh expression towards the man, a bit of anger rushing through his eyes at the very thought of having been called an insect.

“I see you don’t realize what sort of person you’re facing off against right now,” he said. “Can’t say I blame you, seeing as I’m new in town. You better just hope this “Glyde” of yours has what it takes… in fact, you better hope that he’s actually here to do anything about me.”

Just as soon as Vance had finished speaking, something rushed past his face, narrowly missing his head by a mere three or four inches. He looked out into his periphery, to the right from where the something, a bright bullet of magical energy had come rushing by. There was nothing though; nothing to be seen through the still lingering cloud of debris from the earlier explosion. But he had the answer to his question, which counted for something in his opinion; he’d deal with that once he had dealt with the man in front of him.

“Alright. Where were we?” he said to Exilus, still holding a contemptuous glare. Behind him, he could hear the sounds of lasers firing into the distance, where the shot had come from. Good to know I’ve got that covered. “That’s right. You were talking about how I was an insect, and I was about to show you just how wrong you were.” He took one casual step forward, and then a second one. Then, his body blurred as he dashed forward. He held his elbow out before him, as though to make a direct strike. However, rather than driving into the armored plating, he stopped just short of his target. He held his opposite hand forward, projecting a Gravity Push in lieu of his elbow.

((I was gonna post for Glyde, but I’ll do that in my next post, since he’s pinned down for now)).

Then I'll make sure it doesn't hit me, Tsubasa thought with a determined look. He closed his eyes for a brief moment, inhaling and then stopping his breath.

    WHUMP!

The first ball flew at Tsubasa, a bit faster than he had expected. Just as the lump of paint was about to collide with the shield, Tsubasa let out a "Hah!!" He moved his hands into position and focused his aura barrier, making it catch the paint; however, it was a bit more powerful than he had expected, and he was forced to deflect the ball to his right in order to avoid it. He shot a quick look over his shoulder and saw that the paint ball had splatted on the ground not a foot away from Zac.

"Sorry about that!" Tsubasa called to Zac, before turning back and readying himself for the next shot. As it blasted out of the turret, Tsubasa was prepared; he thrust both of his hands forward, meeting the paint through a wall of aura, and forcing it to slow, eventually falling to the ground and splatting safely away from Tsubasa. Any remnants that may have splashed onto him were caught by his aura shield. As his shield began to dissipate, he turned back to Zac sheepishly.

"So, yeah, sorry about that first one, but overall, how did I do?"

    -------------------

“I see you don’t realize what sort of person you’re facing off against right now. Can’t say I blame you, seeing as I’m new in town. You better just hope this “Glyde” of yours has what it takes… in fact, you better hope that he’s actually here to do anything about me.”

Exilus heard him speak, watched his lips move, yet Exilus's malice was so strong he didn't care to process the drivel escaping from this boy's mouth. He simply glared, unwilling to budge even an inch under the boy's taunts. When he heard Glyde's shot and realized the insect in front of him was still standing, his face tore into a frown that bore teeth. That's one paper burned, Glyde, Exilus thought to himself.

    “Alright. Where were we?”

As Vance stepped forward, both of Exilus's Keyblades appeared in his hands in flashes of darkness. However, while Exilus was prepared for battle, he wasn't prepared for the enemy's mode of attack. The boy moved fast, so fast that Exilus could barely react. He saw the enemy's elbow fly toward him; in an act of instinct, Exilus brought the hilt of his Keyblade slamming down upon the boy's elbow. However, before the full force could be delivered, Exilus was hit in the gut with a concussive blast, sending him flying back a good ten feet through rubble and dust. Due to the weight of his armor, Exilus had little maneuverability mid-air and so he crashed harshly.

Whipping himself back onto his feet, Exilus marched back toward his enemy with a bloody avarice. At the same time, he respected an enemy that could actually stand up to him. As he left the small dust cloud created by his crash, Exilus set his eyes back on the boy.

"It seems I've underestimated you," Exilus stated grimly. "I would have never thought you could hit me, let alone knock me back." Exilus brandished his two Keyblades, swinging them in backward arcs. "Let's see how you deal with the power of darkness!!"

Exilus reached out and swung one of his Keyblades, as if to strike across the boy's chest; however, a blast of darkness escaped from the blade mid-arc, shooting directly at the boy's breastplate. Not a second later, Exilus through his other Keyblade in an arc travelling behind and around Glyde, making it difficult to fully escape the barrage. Exilus grinned. He hadn't actually had to fight someone in a long time.

"I think you two die rather well," Zac said with a smile.

"You want more?" Zac asked with a laugh, "Alright, crank it up by 20% guys," Zac said on the radio. The men up at the control room recieved their orders and increased the fire rate and slows by 20%. In a few seconds, the turrets spun again and fired at the Aura controllers. This would hurt a lot if they weren't ready.

Shit shit shit! Even so soon as his shot was fired, Glyde knew for certain that he had missed his mark. He had been using his scanning abilities to trace an energy source that was not Exilus, or one of his henchmen, but one clearly distinct as a "hero;" they all had their own unique traces of life force. However, even with his scanning, the fog had made it difficult for him to place his shot exactly on target.

So for the moment, he had dropped down below his makeshift barrier of ruined building. Laying on his back, he watched as the streaks of laser beams flew last him overhead. He knew the direction the lasers were firing from, but had no measure on how far they were from him, though his guess was that they were close by to have seen his shot. Rolling over onto his stomach, and into a crouch still out of the line of fire, he commenced to spring up to see over the barrier, summoning a reflect spell in front of him to deter the lasers. For but a few seconds he, caught a glimpse across to the next set of barricades, where the outlines of several armed soldiers were visible as the dust screen dispersed.

Glyde dropped back behind his barricade just as his shield broke apart. He had done it; he knew, more or less, how far off the gunners were stationed. With this information, he placed down a useful bit of magic: a spell circle with which he was able to create a portal, which passed through, landing just a few feet behind the group of gunmen as they continued to fire off the wrong direction.

Being noticed in his entrance, Glyde was met by a flurry of "damn it," and "what the," amongst other remarks of shock. One by one, the gunmen fell in their confusion at having been ambushed and Glyde assumed his new firing position.

The "power of darkness," as Exilus had put it was no stranger to Vance, nor was he to it. As the blast of dark energy pulses across the salve between his enemy and him, he threw out his left hand. Spreading out with his palm as its epicenter, a shield of light came into formation. The two forces, the punch of darkness, matched against the resilience of the reflect barrier culminated in the dispersal of both formations.

    ---
Vance's attentions turned to the arcing Keyblade oess than a second after the blast had been blocked. It was traveling in an arc, which left its path of travel as longer, which provided him just enough time to act. He summoned his own Keyblade, and hastily checked on the Exilus' blades movement. With as mighty a heave as he could muster, he flung his Keyblade in a path that allowed the two to meet in midair. This much was a close call, as his had managed to stop Exilis' by only a few yards.

    ---
As soon as the two had fallen to the ground, Vance called his back and fell into a ready stance. "I was hoping not to have to use this so soon," he spat. "But all for the better. It's good for you to know you're not the only Keybearer on this battlefield.

    ---
The gates into the stronghold came open as several units flocked into the vessel that would take them to safety. Amongst them was a unit equipped with a squadron of about ten soldiers with flamethrowers, all directed towards a single woman encased in a prism of solid, crystalline ice. "Ms. Elza!" a man at the head of the unit called. "This is Captain Tres from the lakefront unit. We've captured one of their generals!"

    ---
"Hopefully we do more than die well," Marie commented under her breath before Zac continued.

Marie took a nervous gulp at hearing that the speed of the bullet rounds was going to be doubled. But the nerves quickly dissipated has she considered and calculated how fast that might make them. They were going to be twice as fast, which meant that she had to react twice as fast (or rather be prepared before hand, and her barrier would have to be twice as strong as the first one in order to block the coming lead-based projectile; if she couldn't block those, then she would die well. "OK," she said, stepping back into her "target" position. The gun reeled around and aimed back at her.

    "Pull!" she said.

    "BAM!" Said the gun.

Just like the last time, the household bullet zoomed towards her. But unlike the last time, she was prepared for its speed, and already had her barrier hard at work. The effect far more seamless this time around, and the barrier itself managed to stave off the bullet before it even got too close for comfort. Smiling, Marie stepped back and watched as Tsubasa went through his exercise.
