The gust of wind was strong enough to get James to stop running for a moment. Him not moving increased the length of time that it would take for the two fighters to reach each other. In turn, this extra bit of time allowed James to move his weapon to block Mickale's attack. The swing done to deflect the mouse's attack was awkward, as to avoid the keyblade from missing one leg and hitting the other. As a result, the force of the block wasn't much; the keyblade cut across James' pant leg instead of his actual leg.

With Mickey's hand so close, and by extension the handle of the keyblade so close, James quickly stabbed his sword between the keyblade's handle and hand guard. Thanks to their difference in size, James could easily push Mickey towards a wall to their side until his sword was embedded into the wall, pinning the keyblade against the wall as well. As soon as the weapon was put into the wall, James quickly thrust his knee forward towards the mouse's gut in an attempt to separate the weapon and its master. James could fight without his sword, so he was betting on his opponent to be unable to fight as well without a weapon.
