What happened to turn based rpg's?

the reason for the turn based system being upgraded with real time is because most people want to feel like they are in the game itself and they are part of the story itself. as long as there are people like that the turn based world has gone out the open window

 

I agree with worby a little bit. FFXII felt real to me. The characters was made to feel real too. I like Final Fantasy XII for many reasons, but the fighting system was hard to understand at first, but then it gets fun once you understand it.

 

This is why you receive those little questionnaire papers from buying Square games. People return them with feedback and Square judges from that and will decide what the majority wants. Its all a money thing I think.
Apart from that, I do miss some of the old Turn Based RPG's like Final Fantasy (Before X-2), Breath Of Fire, Golden Sun Chrono Trigger/Cross etc. But the Real Time games are also enjoyable them selves.
FFXIII has a "new" Turn Based system, it still looks kind of Real Time but they may have modified so its almost like a new Battle System. I can't confirm this one yet for the game play trailers look pretty intense to judge.

 

A game that really frustrates me is Valkrie profile 2: Silmeria. It's more like real time, but any new place that you go to, the enemies be super strong & defeats you in 2-3 moves.

I liked FFXII enough, but I do quite miss my beloved turned based RPGs. Luckily, though, I see that Square is remaking some of the best turn based games, in my opinion, at least. (Chrono Trigger, the Legacy installments of Final Fantasy on the DS for examples off of the top of my head... )

Not that I'm desperately hoping that Final Fantasy VI will be remade onto one of the new generation consoles. Or anything. >>;;;

 

FFVIII was kinda of real time. You had to wait for a bar to fill before you could attack. Enemies or your party members could affect that bar with time magic, so its real time. I don't know what governs the enemies movements. I like real time games, because they seem more challenging. Also, you can do so much more with real time, something that the poke'mon games should have, but never will.

 

The Old ATB (Active Time Battle) gauge. Quick and smart thinking was needed. I guess you could call it Real Time in a way. But there was still the fact that you take "turns" considering that ATB was needed to be full before you can act. But all the FF's were like that weren't they? All FF's before X

 

No i think the first ones weren't like that, 1-3. I'm not sure though. So long as u can mess with the time, its real time. Poke'mon is an exception.

 

And Breath Of Fire series, Golden Sun series, Suikoden series and perhaps plenty-a-more

 

I loved FFX's battle system. I wish they would bring it back.

 

Is FFX-2 is counted as one?
