This here is a guide on how to defeat him. Vanitas Remnant is a lingering spirit of Vanitas but he is an evolved version of him. In other words, he will kill you quicker than Sephiroth would... or on par with him that is. In order to defeat him, this is what you should watch out for:

    1. Once the battle starts, he will do one of the following. If you don't attack, he will immediately jump into his invincible dark sphere and start spewing dark versions of himself to kill you immediately. If you throw an attack, he will dodge and try to throw another attack. However, there are other attacks that you should avoid while you keeping that in mind. If you are able to smack him, he will most likely counter attack, teleporting and stabbing you with an ice attack with an immediate game over. The Remnant also has some nasty surprises such as shot-locking you to shoot a dark mid-range beam, go into the ground, to sneak up on you and release a big blast of explosion, various swinging-and-teleporting, a horrendous attack where he make the area dark to unleash dark icicles to clash together at you, swing an arc-energy blade at you and one where he charges up his attack and start swinging his orange-enhanced blade at you, ending with an x- technique attack. If you get caught in any of these attacks, you may not survive.

    2. YOU CAN BEAT HIM AT A LOW LEVEL! However, make sure you have Second Chance and Once More in case you get caught in his attack. Carry at least one cure spell (I recommend potions), in case you get hit. Spells will not work against him at all and your shotlock attacks will be ineffective, especially since he will teleport a lot so those two are out of the question. However, there is a neat trick that I had discovered. Remember all of those big pillar of rocks? Make sure that you examine them and find the longest, widest pillar before you go into battle. What you need is the attack ability, Strike Raid. Yep. That's it. Strike Raid. You may think that it is weak but in a battle such as this, you will end up finding that he is a pushover even with his uber-powers.

I recommend having 5-7 Strike Raids. Which keyblades you use will not matter but in my opinion, I say use the one with the strongest strength so that you can deplete his health bar faster. Now, whenever the battle start, start running for the longest and widest pillar rock that I just mentioned. While you are doing that, Vanitas Remnant may go into his Dark Shield and start spewing his illusions at you to finish you off. MAKE SURE YOU DODGE/CARTWHEEL. After his last illusion, he will then try to teleport up to you to strike you himself. However, if you was able to get behind that big pillar of rock as he shoot out his illusion, he will most likely run up to the rock only. This is where the fun begins.

Make sure that you are locked-on to him. After that, start using Strike Raid to start throwing your keyblade. You must be on the opposite side of the rock from him! While you are locked-on to him, your keyblade will go through the rock onto the other side to hit him. Just rinse and repeat. You will be in a good enough range to do enough damage. However, if he ends up getting out of your reach, make sure that you put yourself in a better position again. He will try to come to your side to try to finish you off. He is faster than you so if he somehow reached you, start cartwheeling around the pillar until you are on the opposite side again. Continue repeating the Strike Raid technique on him and he will fall... eventually. This can work with Aqua, Ventus and Terra. Since Terra is the strongest in brute strength, he will defeat the Remnant faster.

:) You will then will earn the Void Gear keyblade and have a chance to go against the Unknown at the Land of the Departure.

Why would you even mention a Cure spell since the boss will use Cure whenever you do. For those of you reading this thread, DO NOT use Cure (Or the stronger variations) against this boss. Stick with potions (Or a move like Ventus' Whirlwind which heals with an attack).

Why not just say dodge? You make it sound like you're playing specifically as Aqua (Which knowing you I'm certain you are).

Yeah strictly potions! You can probably beat him with this alone.
    (I sure did)

Some spells do stun him such as
    Mine Shield and Mine Square
They are perfect for offensive and defensive attacks.

Which is why I said that I recommend potions with it bold and underline. Not only that, in case someone wants to carry a cure spell anyway, I only suggest the first tier (In case they somehow just end up running out of potions... it's possible that someone just end up in that situation!). XD And yes Desert. You should know that I was playing Aqua when I mentioned cartwheel. She's a beast. But yea. Dodging is the same as cartwheel per-say.

-.- I would not even recommend those spells. I even used Seeker Mine but trying to lure him into the mine did not work well for me and once they disappear, I will have to set another one and if he jump back into his Dark Shield, that will be just a waste of time. This is just from experience.

Mine spells do work, but you need to know that sometimes they are not going to work, but it's worth trying
