    "Orange"

An orange. So simple and round, bright like a flame; cupped in the hand of a passing stranger whose hands carry the stains of one accustomed to labor's lack of mercy, whose face is thinned and hollowed with the weary marks of starvation. He grips it tightly, as if he can feel the fresh, soft meat carried beneath the rind, fleshy, delicate, juicy to the taste…but his eyes are hard, set, determined as he heads back to his forge to begin the new set of dry-iron swords that will bring him food enough to feed his family for another few weeks.

There is no care for the ideals, the shouts for liberation or victory, there is only the one thought – how to survive. Will there be enough life to go on another day? Another month? Will they be lucky and reap another year upon the use of old scrap metals and sweat? Gods willing, it might happen.

But God has nothing to do with it.

The orange is lifted to the man's face, eyes closed just for a moment to savor the sweet, tart smell of the fruit he will never taste before handing it down to a pair of wide-eyed, nearly skeletal children, ribs peeking from the cage of skin that holds them together, clawing fingers tearing at the colorful rind to delve into the meat that is as potent, if not more so, than the discarded package. It's bittersweet, more than a little sour because it's not quite ripened all the way. They hardly care.

Such is the scent of war.

    "The Hill of Nature's Fears"

    Lost and alone…
    Is anyone home?
    Home to greet their guest?
A friendly face amid a nest
    That houses naught but emptiness?

    Dusky and gray…
    He greets the day;
Every dawn, as the sun stirs…
    Though a mournful exterior
Is all he has, unfit to offer her.

    Rusty red…
    The grass is dead,
    Unattended for hundreds of years.
Blanketing the hill of nature's fears…
She turns her head – weeps bitter tears.

    Bereaved and glum…
    The shadows come.
She turns to go, his only friend,
    Having elsewhere to attend.
Nothing to do, nowhere to go, he waits for dawn again.

    "For Him"

I walked with him for many years
    Though I knew it not
A face reflected in water mirrors
    With sunlight and stardust, wrought

I could not see him standing there
    Without the barest lie
All I knew was an existence where
Man is a creature of pride

I spoke to him in bitter tones
    Not knowing he could hear
Until I learned that eternity knows
The very darkest of our fears

I met his eyes with softened breath
The laws of right, they bend
As the icy touch of Lordly Death
    Calls me to my end

    "Darkness Falls"

    For BMW XD

Velvet and ebony, the smoothest silk
Wrapping the pallor of curdled milk
It is softness over blade, a hidden spear
That forsakes the dawn with frozen tears

Smooth and austere, gentle and hard
Playing games with a gambler's cards
Deaf to sorrow, blind to hate
Only the thoughtless shall it berate

Cold as water, warm as fire
Only sunlight bids it to tire
Pierced with the shadows of ages passed
It speaks in whispers of the harassed

Cajoling and teasing, biting or clawing
Emptiness within the heart that is gnawing
So sweet it seems at first sign
Only to prove that evil stars shall align

    Moving as the pastor's hymn
    Tearing out the soul within
    Climbing up the ivy walls
    Goodness sleeps when darkness falls

    Slumber still and breath forgotten
With its own glory is it besotted
    Forever alone, a forsaken song
    Murdering those it strings along

    See its beauty; loving, hailing
    See its horror; writhing, wailing
    Sinking deep within grieving time
    Lingering beneath a blackened rhyme

Ask its name and thou shalt receive
An answer that is built to deceive
    A broken, bloody melody
    That seeks a willing harmony

Turn thy back to its plea
Then shall life return to thee
    Pages turn; dusty and torn
The written words battered and worn

The spells of the tortured – justified
    Withered vengeance – glorified
A dying gasp amid shattered calls
    Honor dies when darkness falls

    "Marriage"

Diamond ring with the shine of silver,
    Circle of wealth;
    Dusty upon red velvet.

Bare finger with the crimson nails,
    Knife of steel;
    Chops carrots meant for one.

    Husband with the treacherous smile,
    Lips of scarlet;
Match the pool from throat to floor.

    "The Last Dance"

I see you, settled side by side,
Silent symbolism painted on bare toes.
Callused toes with broken nails and bloody heels.
That is the way of the true devoted.

You are my bane; poison in my veins.
Injection of fear I cannot see,
I feel you every time I breathe.
The threat that lingers, ever present,
As I step back and forth across the stage.

I have tried to forget you,
Shove away the ache binding down my limbs,
Drown in the sweat and sweeter pains
    To feign an ignorance.

But the shallow simmer of hatred
Is not so simply tossed aside.

    All that I have, I have given to you;
Yet all you want is more.
This thing inside me eats, consumes, devours,
Its way up from the floor.
    It has stolen every star.

    Doomed, I know I am.
To live my life inside a world
Without the idol in my heart.
Condemned by the tastes I should never have known.

There is no more that I can do...
I have nothing else to give.
No more breath; no tears to help me pass.
    Oh, let me fall now,
And this dance shall be my last.

    "Tragedy of the Thief"

Snow falls like an ashen rain
Pierced through by the ring of guns.
Stone pieces on an iron chess board --
    It all remains the same.

The hotel room is cold and empty,
Rank with the sour taste of alcohol
Whose fire has long since faded.
    Fleshy armor breaks upon memory.

    God has no smile for the wicked;
    No flowers for their grave.
The dance of crime is overrated,
Or so the dead men say.

The thief breathes white into the night,
His fear the taste of bitter mirth,
And knows he has not long to live.
    Golden feathers deny their worth.

    Graying cemetery among watery green,
No tears for the needy are shed.
The sky weeps into the river:
    "Everything shall end."

    "Obsession"

The story of my heart is one yet untold.
    Come, take my hand,
Take a step, take a stand,
And I shall lead you to madness.

    Come, take my hand,
Find the word in my eyes.
I will paint you in silver, wrap you in cold.
Rouge for the lips bidding hush to the wise.

Find the word in my eyes,
Truth and devotion, or perhaps devastation.
Rouge for the lips bidding hush to the wise.
Deluge of drama, denouncing and drained.

Truth and devotion, or perhaps devastation.
You said you've gone away from me,
Deluge of drama, denouncing and drained,
But I can feel you...feel you when you breathe.

You said you've gone away from me --
    Take a step, take a stand --
But I can feel you...feel you when you breathe.
The story of my heart is one yet untold.
