How to Build a Good Role Play Character

First imagine the most ultimate bad ass character you can think of with crap loads of power and a really awesome weapon to boot. Now throw him away because that is the one thing you don't want to have happen. Very good, next step.

Second, take a minute to come up with a different character that has zero to no super powers. If you must have one then put some limits on that characters powers. The limiter can be anything so long as they can't get away with just solely relying on that power.

Third, write a short story or some such about the character. This step is totally voluntary but it will allow you to explore what your character is like and what he/she can do. It also gives you chance to learn your characters behaviors and abilities. That will help when you get to the fourth step.

Fourth, roleplay it. Get your character on the roleplays and see what the rest of the group makes of it. Do they like it? Hate it? Feel sad for it? Get some personal opinions and incorporate those into your character style.

The reason we don't make a super character is that its boring. No one wants to read about someone who doesn't struggle and just goes from one fight to one fight and winning with the swing of an axe. Not only that but it becomes very difficult to stop one self from powerplaying/god modding. All of this can be avoided with the usual run of the mill average guy with nothing particularly special about himself/herself. We love reading about a person that struggles through conflicts and barely scrapes by. It also becomes next to impossible to powerplay/god mod so long as you stay within your characters limits. This has been a public service announcement from your Spam Knight. :D
