Ok I know it has been a while since a major console release of kingdom hearts (8 years to be precise) and the franchise has managed to stay afloat with many releases of games traversing multiple handheld platforms that explained all the backstory any die hard fan would want.

Now with the upcoming launch of the playstation 4 there has been talk of a kingdom hearts 3 being released. And I myself being a fan who has only played the console games not wanting to spend all that money buying the hand held consoles the games traverse just to play them worries me that the next big installment on the console will force me to do just that (buying all the handhelds and games) to enjoy the game and understand what is happening with in the story.

Now I ask you fellow readers who have and haven't played all the games. Should the third console title be enjoyable with just having played the prior console games or is it really necessary to have played all the handhelds to enjoy the whole world

    Hi Reno,
I've played the majority of the Kingdom Hearts games (all except COM and BBS) and I think I have a fairly good idea of what's going on within the series, however I've found that much of the back story (rumoured to be the groundwork of KH3) is a mystery to me as BBS apparently explains the origins of the Keyblade etc. For this reason I am considering investing in a second hand Psp to buy BBS before the KH3 release and it may be a good idea for you to play/watch it too. In terms of the others you could probably get away without playing them, 365/2 covers the organisation in depth and Re:coded explains the letter in the KH2 secret ending, I would think you could still understand the 3rd game if you cant/ don't want to play those. I would recommend DDD because it is the game that sets us up for KH3, it gives you an idea of who the antagonists are and the general idea of the quest, however you could likely still work out what's going on and enjoy KH3 without it.
