I'm for it in a controlled manner. It'd be awesome to get rid of inheritable diseases, make new kinds of food and make super soldiers or super people (well last two are out of hand).

I've discussed this with others before and we were discussing about a "shop" where you can make the "perfect" child. Choose what traits he or she will have, straight hair or curly hair, black hair or brown, etc.
Interesting idea, I thought. I liked it, and I don't see any problems except for the "playing god" part (Though I have in interest in playing God, just that a number of people don't and do not like it)

So with that in mind, what do others think of this "shop"?

  3. In all honesty, genetic engineering could bring around many possibilities in Human evolution. We could potentially remove genes that cause horrible diseases and we may have a healthy world. But as Libertine stated, it should be regulated to a certain degree.

I would like to be able to choose the gender of my children. However, for the rest of it, I don't think I would want to be a part of it. I think I would rather be surprised, and learn my child's traits and gifts as we go along, rather than know everything ahead of time. But, if I were a carrier for a genetic disease, (one that could potentially cause early death, or limit enjoyment of life) I would like to be able to make it so that my child would not inherit that, if it were possible.

I think genetic engineering would need to be highly monitored, though. I think people could easily get carried away, if anything were possible.

Agree with Toph. To some extent I'm with it, I'd love to choose the gender of my child, but then again there is nothing wrong with a surprise boy/girl.

I would rather be with the surprise part. Also, I don't even care about the gender of a child because either way, I'll take care of the child to the best of my ability. Also, we need to be real careful for genetic engeneering because it can go out of hand. This is not where we can do the Sim thing or where we can just jump on your Nintendo Wii and make your own Mii or what not because people can try to go overboard with this. Not saying that I would use it but people woul dlove to play god and use it to the highest degree.

  7. People really wouldn't be able to play considering that the procedure overall would cost a very high amount of money.

What I don't want is to be one of those mothers who end up with five boys because I kept hoping to get that girl eventually (or vice versa). I'd take the first child as a surprise, choose the next to be the opposite gender (because I want one of each), then any more after that could be whichever.

Oh, I'd take care of any child as best I could, regardless. But my grandmother had five boys before she got her girl, and I've known at least two families off the top of my head- one had four boys at last count, and they were gonna try again for a girl, and the other had three girls before they got their boy. That's too many kids for me. If I could know that I were getting one of each, I'd take that offer, because two children is really all that I would prefer.

I agree entirely with the science of it but i am entirely against the morals of what it suggests .

Like plastic surgery it should be used specifically and only to correct misfortunes that might cause suffering in a realistic way and not because someone happens to think larger breasts would make them prettier .

If genetics were be used to produce replacement limbs or internal organs or perhaps even new eyes , then yes i am all for it , imagine someone who is set to die because of a faulty liver actually being able to grow a new liver inside them with the help of genetics so they become their own donor when the time comes or a blind person being able to to reproduce a working eye !

I am totally against the use of genetics to satisfy whims i,e kids hair color , sex or intelligence , it flys in the face of nature with long term consequences that cannot be fathomed . At present bleached blond bimbo describes 90% of young women in Britain but this is a fad that will soon die out , in a few years all these wannabe Barbies will perhaps have pink hair and black lips or something else prescribed by fashion magazines!

Imagine if all these wannabe Barbies where to be given the option of making their kids Barbie dolls through genetics , in ten years we would be blessed with billions of Barbie clones all trying like mad to look like Amy Whitehouse !

The human race is not yet intelligent enough or mature enough to be given such options .

However i think the Scientists working at genetic engineering are in fact doing so with very good intentions towards peoples health and it is the media and the easily led that believe they are planning clone armies and 8 legged chickens !

  10. To sort of counter that statement I'd like to let you know that we are advancing continously and rapidly. For instance, with computers. Within the past 8 years, computers have gone through drastic and amazing changes in such a short time. Yes, it would be very wrong to model your ideal child and have them look something like wtf, but when comes down to it (in my opinion) it would certainly be nice to have certain traits added and some removed.

Once it is perfected, I'm gonna make myself Spider-Man.

Gattaca...... Because that's the world I want to live in

As fun as it is to play God, the power would be in the wrong hands.

    Meh, I prefer the suprises.

I'm sure I'd never be able to afford any engineering anyway, so I'd end up with surprises regardless. Or maybe I'd change my mind about choosing if it came right down to it. And I understand and mostly agree with Keyblade Master Roxas' post on the first page.

On the other hand, though... Once my child were born, I'm sure I'd fall in love with him or her no matter the gender, but I think that if I were trying for a girl, and the doctor told me it was a boy, I'd feel disappointment, at least at first. Choosing gender, at least for the second child, would just be a way to avoid that, for me. *shrugs*

And I hate surprises, anyway XD. I prefer to be as prepared and knowing as possible.

Which traits do you think it would be nice to add or remove, and which do you think shouldn't be fooled with?

We'd add traits that are more positive, such as more natural strength, perfect skin, that stuff. And take away genetic diseases or anything that would make somebody inferior.

LIke I said, Gattaca. Look it up. Good movie.

Meh, this isn't much that i expected. Since mostly people talks about Human Genetic Engineering, could someone change the title into "Human Genetic Engineering"?

So in my opinion, This (genetic engineering) can saves many lives of human and cure some dangerous diseases such as Cancer and others. But when its about for enhancement use (adding traits, and stuff) i don't like it.

Humans will be divided into 2 classes, Natural Humans and Genetically Enhanced Humans.

Lets just say if you are a poor people who can't afford it and your friends are smarter, physically stronger and others because of the genetic engineering, what would happen?

It will affect many aspects to your children.

Really, I was replying to the comment of Roxas, about it being wrong to model your ideal child, then continuing on to say it would be nice to have certain traits removed or added. Where is the line drawn between too much engineering, and things that are ok to pick and choose?

I think that genetic engineering is a good thing. It could help people get rid of diseases like diabetes that are inherited. People could also be made stronger, and that could help armies grow strong. Also I heard of genetic engineering that you can do on a child that is going to be born, so you can change eye color and hair color, and that could make it so parents could be more happy with what there children look like.

That's pretty pathetic if a parent isn't happy with what their child looks like.

I'm all for this in the case of curing a deasese or something but i'm against it when it comes to choosing your baby's gender, I think it's immoral and it's trying to become God.

You know, I think there is something inherent in a parent that makes them automatically think their child is the prettiest thing ever. Even babies who an outsider would see and think are goofy-looking or downright ugly are considered by their parents to be perfect. I don't think this is a strong argument for genetic engineering.

    And this, too. ^_^

    Answer Man Man I'm Awesome

Genetic Engineering i think is good but of course has it;s cons. For one someone could make the perfect super solider, then they would breed them like monster to have a army, when i say this i mean they would make boys and girls that have big builds or would be able to have strong shapes. I mean also humans would be acting like some god, all the rich people would being doing it by buying so much of it that only higher up ppl would could use it. So really there are many more, but i think it's a good idea, as long as nobody really dies or is turned into a test slave or something then i'm cool with it.
