I want to make this clear. Anybody can join. Just submit a satisfactory character profile, and above all, READ EVERYTHING BELOW. All this information is vital. Do the reading in parts if you have to. And without further ado, the role-play.

The smoke billowed up from the barrel, and the deafening boom resonated between the alley walls. The sound had been amplified, monumentally, to the point that it scared him. The knock back of his invention snapped his whole arm backwards - nearly smacking his contraption into his face. The force was so strong, so unexpected, that it sent him reeling backwards and landing against to cold, wet, rough concrete ground.

That’s what he got for not testing the thing before hand.

His calculations had been so accurate - he was sure - that nothing could possibly go wrong. And yet everything was. The dreary night was inching along, and his eyes couldn’t believe what had just happened. The whole thing was supposed to be a competition - showing that machine was better than magic - it wasn’t supposed to go like this!

With a shrill cry, he dropped his invention - a queer thing that allowed him to shoot small metallic balls at accelerated rates - an invention that was supposed to revolutionize and take the place of those damn crystals! Those crystals that not everyone could use. It wasn’t fair!

The puddles splashed beneath his charging feet, and the dark corridors of the city seemed to go on endlessly. He had to keep running, keep moving, and get home as fast as possible. The haunting memory of that body only served to push him faster.

All through the night, he never stopped.

The morning sun was blaring through the large windows. Each one planted next to the other so the whole room was doused in light. The chancellor’s flowing velvet robes dragged across the ground as he crossed the white vein marble. His desk sat close to the windows - which gave him the most light and the most magnificent view of the city.

He had just settled into his high backed chair when the doors burst open and a wide-eyed, frightened woman ran at him. “Chancellor! Chancellor!”

“Easy Mary, easy. What is it?” His hands were waving through the air in an effort to calm the young receptionist. A handful of papers were in her hands and she was holding them out desperately. With the composed air the chancellor took the papers, giving Mary a curious glance before his eyes rolled over the scribbled lines.

A small smirk was on his face for just a second, and then it was gone.

Pulling his air of authority around himself, the chancellor rose, slammed his hands against his surface desk, and roared, “This is an outrage! Mary I want you to get as many our men and women together this instant!”

“Right away chancellor,” she replied breathlessly.

Settling back down into his seat, the chancellor intertwined his fingers and rested his elbows against his desk.

This was just what he needed to ban those monstrosities. It was finally time for the evolving sciences of machine to come to an end.

Needless to say, the Chaedan Suppression would go down in infamy in the later years. The rather large nation failed to suppress the growing number of machines powered by steam, and for the next hundred years they went largely unchallenged. These days, machines are just about as prevalent as those crystals that have been coveted so much over the ages. But it’s not easy. A tension hangs over every city in the world, a mousetrap just waiting for the mouse. This is the story of the world, and how that trap finally snapped.

    And now, the

    RULES

    1. Most Standard Rules apply. But please, don’t hesitate to ask for an exception. This RP is all about collaboration – Which brings us to. . .

    2. COLLABORATION. A lot of this RP will be collaboration, when it isn’t solo character development. Just don’t hang quiet about it – tell everybody, including your partner, so that nobody is left going WTF after something big happens. As the GM, I am allowed to keep some major plot points secret so there ARE some surprises.

    3. Characters can and WILL die. Don’t expect to role-play a flying brick that just narrowly escapes death every time.

    4. Choosing a side in the prologue is optional. Since it is before the conflict begins, characters are allowed to be ambivalent. As the role-play goes on, however, it isn’t required that you pick a side later on. It is recommended, though, considering you will lose out on many opportunities. You won’t be able to pick a job class without the choice.

    5. This world is something entirely new and malleable. A blank slate. Don’t hesitate to add something new. Just please, keep the setting in mind and read the rules.

    6. The two sides as they will be named after the prologue are the Global Engineering Alliance (or G.E.A.) and the Arcane Coalition (or A.C.) Do not forget this.

    7. AC people use crystals. Steam punkers use steam and coal. And stuff. Try to keep things balanced while using the blank slate mantra.

    8.

    Setting info!

H.E.M.P. – Heavily equipped mechanized personnel. Generally, the things we modern folks would call mecha.

IASN – International Alliance of Sovereign Nations. A revolution in peacekeeping ideas, this group functions much like our UN, minus a military force.

Global Engineering Alliance (or G.E.A.) - This group actually exists in the Prologue, though very disorganized. Consider it like a craftsman guild that exists all throughout the world. When the conflict starts, this will be the group that raises the banner for science and technology.

Arcane Coalition (or A.C.) – This group actually doesn’t exist initially. The Arcane Coalition is the group that spawns once conflicts kick up, uniting those that would have the powers of magic

Crystals – The ‘power source’ of the AC. Crystals allow one to channel a combination of the user’s own energy in combination with the natural energy flow around them to manifest itself in various forms. I.E.

Guns and the like – While displaying a crystal in public is A-ok, keeping a gun out in public is bad news. They’re the sort of thing you might get arrested for, not unlike being out in public modern day. However, you can have them out outside of city limits or in small towns, because those regions tend to be wilder.

    Social Classes

Pedestrian – Your run of the mill ‘blank slate’. No apparent skills or defects.

Artisan – Their craft may use magics or technology to work with, but they are technically a neutral class given their nature for being ‘either /or’. Generally a less wealthy class, but are highly creative thinkers. I.E. They are more flexible for situations, both socially and literally.

Nobles – While the term “nobles” is used, what is meant is the upper class. Very wealthy, but not very flexible - flexible meaning that they aren’t as free to move as they choose. Social restrictions and whatnot

    Arcana Job Classes

Researcher – Experiments with different crystal cuts and their potentials as well as new magic techniques. Nobles have the highest-grade crystal and tools available as well as ready test subjects, but they are pretty much married to their jobs. Artisans generally use what they can find, steal, or buy if they have enough money.

Evoker – Your quintessential summoner class. They are somewhat more versatile than their GEA counterparts, being able to summon creatures of various sizes and powers. However, in Prologue and Chapter 1, Evokers are just workers for Arcana airships to provide power and control to the massive crystals on them. Nobles work for wealthy families and will be the first to be able to evoke monsters at the end of chapter one, artisans will be the working class people on the airships much like a coal stoker in the Prologue.

Spellcaster – They use staves with crystals in the ends, generally, but there are whole slew of whole or part crystal weapons.. In Prologue and Chapter 1, non-Noble casters tend to be ill equipped, using gauntlets with crystal palms or at their worst straight up crystals.

    Gear Job Classes

Inventor – Basically your run of the mill gear nut. They create cool things for their group or for the GEA. Their creativity is only limited to their resources at hand. Inventor social life is nonexistent, as a Noble, but Artisans aren’t exactly the friendliest bunch either.

Pilot – Pretty self-explanatory, but they can pilot pretty much any GEA creation, be it airship or mecha. Depending on what sub class, you either start with a fancy airship, an okay mecha or monowheel, or some sort of motorized scooter. Just kidding about the scooter. Artisans get whatever they can get their hands on.

GEA Soldier – Armed with a boom stick and a primitive form of grenade, these guys don’t play around. In Prologue and Chapter 1, non-Noble soldiers are armed only with a simple musket or at their worst a matchlock pistol or homemade grenades.

    Name: Lily-Anne Thompson

    Age: 24

    Gender: Female

Personality: A sweet girl. She acts bored and uninterested a lot, but she pays lots of attention to things around her. Very intelligent, though forced decision making is not a strong point for her.

    Social Class: Artisan

    Side Chosen: G.E.A.

    Job Class: Pilot

Appearance: She has curly black hair, which is usually piled atop her head in a messy bun. She has nice curves, and the accentuates them equally as nicely with her choice of steampunk accessories. She has golden brown eyes than glint copper like the gears scattered over her clothing.

History: Lily-Anne was raised by her father, Roger. Roger was a Soldier. He married a Spellcaster named Heather before the big conflict came up to split them up. Heather tried time and again to get her daughter attuned to using crystals, but Lily-Anne opted for her father's workbench. Downtrodden and upset, Heather left and joined the A.C. to fight knowingly against her husband and one day, her own daughter.

Since her mother's departure, Lily-Anne learned how to build things like her father. Like her father, she can operate most anything she can get her hands on, earning her the class of Pilot. Lily-Anne's father was consumed by a sickness that took over his body and made it nearly impossible to move without the aide of machines. He died, but left to her his workshop and tools. She bucked up and learned how to take care of herself at the age of twelve.

By the age of fourteen, she was completely self reliant. Lily-Anne made her own clothes, sprinkled with gears and cogs from old machines about the house. She made a living for herself working for the GEA when possible. It's been ten years since then, and she is an established business woman with a prestigious H.E.M.P. restoring and remodeling shop. She also builds small-time guns and such on the side for a bit of under-the-table money.
