Hey look! This is the fourth thread in a row that I made!

Anyways, debate about existentialism and stuff. I can't think of a better description, therefore, I suck. >_<

well, that is a very hard word to understand (even looking the meanings at dictionary.com) but here's what i have to say

we aren't entirely free to choose what we want to do. there are always others that will force us to do stuff or somehow affect us like peer pressure and things like that.

Well, to basically summarize Existentialism, it is the philosophy that life is meaningless.

Existentialism became a noticeable philosophy after WWII when this one guy said "God is dead." I forget the guy's name though.

A popular Existentialism book is The Stranger, written by Albert Camus.

And as another bit, the Theater of the Absurd genre has Existentialist ideas, but is not Existentialist itself.

  4. Existentialism to me is an educated emo's way of getting their point around. It's honestly ridiculous to me when someone comes up with sort of statement to say that life is meaningless. The reason why I choose to believe in higher powers is that I believe that humans are not limited to simply mechanical protocol.

When I say "mechanical protocol" I mean that when we are living we go through stages, like how a machine works before finally breaking down. We are born, we development, we get educated, we work, we reproduce, and then we die.

I don't think that the statement "life is meaningless" is so bad, if it comes from the right mouth - since what purpose does anything living creature have anyway? Okay, okay, it sounds lil' harsh from a person who's emo (not pointing fingers here), since they have that reputation when it comes to the topics suicide and angst. I just believe that there's no destinied things for us to do than to eat, drink, sleep, basics like that.

If my life would have a purpose, it would be to drink and smoke - as well as sleep late from almost anything arranged.

  6. Well then, if you look at it that way, then everyone has a sort of prdestined thing to do before they die.

I'm not meaning that the only things that I should do before my death would be smoking and boozing, I'm just saying that I don't believe that anyone in this planet is "destined" to do anything in their lifes when they are born.

Of course there's a bunch of things that I would want to do before my death, but it's a list, not "destiny".

  8. All right then, that's understandable.

Just saying, it was either Nichze or Marx that said that God is Dead.

  10. It was someone during W.W.II.

I believe it was Nietzsche who said that.

I'll admit that I know very little about existentialism. The way I understand the idea is that 'the ultimate source of my reality is me, and as such, my life is entirely what I make it, and so I must accept all responsibility for every choice I make'. (I yoinked that from some yahoo answers page).

I have to say that I find that emphasis on taking responsibilty appealing, to a point. I'm often irritated when people (and yeah, I do it too) try to make excuses and blame things on anyone else rather than themselves. But I think existentialism puts more responsibilty on an individual than I find comfortable, and I could see someone who believes in it becoming depressed and unhappy if life doesn't turn out well for them.

But again, this is just my two cents based on the little bit I've learned (and retained) about existentialism from school, and the little I lazily Google searched while writing this. ^_^

That's the guy (Not Marx. He thought up Communism). Couldn't spell his name though.

Existentialism is not an emo thing, even if emos think of that. Thinking about it, it doesn't seem too unreasonable, and it can actually be liberating.
