I haven't seen a topic like this yet...so I'm just wondering what people have to say.

Where I live, if you want to be humane and adopt an abandoned pet, the pet MUST be spayed and/or neutered. (In case you don't know, this means it can't have offspring) The "Society for the Protection and Care of Animals" (SPCA) which is my local organization, claims this is the humane choice as well.

For kind of obvious reasons, it seems like it's not...but there are factors to consider, such as an ever growing pet population and abandonned pets.

    What do you think?

Too be honest,I dont know.I mean,we all d things that seem to go against each other. We allow all kinds of things, then allow things that just go against that as well.In this case,I lean toward it not bein humane, though I can see why they would consider it so.For one,the animal who is abused might not take care of its own babies that well because it is too scared off things it has not seen yet, thinking it will also hurt them. But for animals that are regular, people have do that to them as well.I can see why in some cases, like not having enough money to support alot of baby animals, but it also just doesnt seem completly right to me.

I think I'm obliged to agree. Contrary to what most people seem to think these days, I feel as though something is a-miss about 'fixing' your pets. (Though personally, I think altruism ('kindness in nature') will prevail, even in the case of an abused pet).

It just feels more like a shot at the owners than the pets...which doesn't seem fair to the pets. Like I see signs saying "Be humane, spay/neuter your pets" and they have a very sad picture of a kitten peering out of a dumpster or something, and a statistic like "x pets were found abandoned between 2006-2007."

But what is the target audience? I mean, do you really think someone who would abandon their pet in a dumpster, would be touched by such an image? No, the people who would be affected are the one who would never do such a thing. They're the ones who go out, fix their pet, even though, should their pet have had a litter, they would be responsible owners.

And then the buck stops at the animals whose reproductive ability is forcefully removed. (As an aside, has anyone seen the operation performed? I think you can even find it on youtube, or google video)

Whatever happened to the brilliant (sarcasm) idea of giving squirrels birth control?

Yea,or the bunnies! But I agree with all that,it doesnt really seem to flow right.I rather not even have to watch that. Also, you noticed how they never tell us people to go get neutered so we can control our populations? No,they do abortions, which also makes me believe that if we tried doing that to animals,it would cause an outcry by the very same people who want us to get our pets "fixed' !Also, why call it "fixed?"Its like saying there is something wrong with our pets!

Well it kind of depends. I do believe animals should get fixed so more dogs aren't brought into the world and are adopted again, but then again eventually we'd run out of pets. Plus certain types of animals used as bomb dogs, police dogs, drug dogs, so on need to be specially bred so not all pets should be fixed. If possible, there should be a regulation against numer of animals a breeder can breed in a year and most people should look into adoption. You never know what you'll find. After all the Obama's adopted there labradoodle, it's a shelter dog but look where it's at. Plus it's well trained, so shelter dogs are just as good as bred dogs. My dog was an abandoned dog we found and rescued(no shelter involved) he is very very smart, well trained(except when he goes the bathroom)

    So what should be done
a regulation on number of animals bred by public breeders a year
if the owner plans to never ever breed the animal should be fixed so accidents won't happen in cases of running away(then again I got my cat from a cat who ran away and came back pregnant)
Shelter Dogs should be put first before bred dogs

The only reason pets are neutered (in my opinion) are for human benefits. Animals such as dogs survived before they were kept as pets. It's cruel that you would get your pet fixed unless its necessary, how would man feel if a more inteligent being was around and started neutering us...
