    I'm sure everyone is all familiar with the word Chivalry. Used on dates, and is basicly the 'old fashoned' way of showing courtosey towards women. It was also the medieval system, principles, and customs of knighthood and all that jazz.

    Still today, chivalry is used in most relationships and on a lot of dates. Some women find it demeaning in todays society. When I guy opens a door for a girl some women find it an insult to her independance. I figured this may be the topic for a light hearted debate.

    What is your oppinion on chivalry? Is it an intrusion on womens independance in todays society? *IMHO: no*
    If you are a guy or a girl you can contribute to the conversation.

    Some examples of what I mean are as follows but not limited to:
    When a man opens the door for a woman at a restaurant and orders off the menu.
    When a man tests the wine ordered at a dinner;
    When a man throws his coat down over a puddle so that a woman can walk over it;
    When a man pulls out a chair or offers his chair for a woman;
    When he places a woman and child behind him during a robbery or mugging in order to protect them;

    Some other examples:
    Defend the weak and innocent.
    Never abandon a friend.
    Avoid deception.
    Live for freedom, justice and all that is good.

    I don't find it wrong. I mean, if the man is opening a door for you, that doesn't mean that a female should just get steamed up about it. Do you whether have a man who knows how to treat their woman right or what? I do that a lot for ladies & not one female got mad at me. If a woman wants to open the door for herself, it'll be nice to just let the guy know about it.

    Chivalry is just outdated in today's world. Women aren't considered to be helpless or defenseless anymore, and it's not the man's responsibility to protect her. It's just not how it goes.

    I do think that some of those things are courtesy for when you're on a date, like pulling the girl's chair out for them. To be honest, it's kind of sweet, but in excess it can be insulting, I agree.

    I use chivalry for opening doors & to help them getting something when they need something. That's what I use chivalry for. I don't know who would use chivalry to test wine. Females can test it out for themselves I think. -__- & a man to put thier coat over a puddle? What if the coat is brand new? Wow. As for a robbery, the man would either hide them or just ditch the woman & child to save his own behind. Chivalry is little bit more common for opening doors I think.

    A door? Really? That's a stupid thing to go on a rampage about. Although the coat on the puddle thing is kind of weird. Just step over it or go around the puddle, yo. No need to ruin your coat for it. Puddlewater is always gross and dirty. If I were a guy I would NEVER do that. EVER. Because my coat is warm and I paid for that!!! Anyways, it's all very sweet and stuff (except for the coat and puddle, that's just plain weird) but it's nothing to go gaga (Lawls, Lady Gaga) about.

    I'm an old-fashioned girl, and I support chivalry. I like being treated like a lady. ^_^ I don't think there is anything wrong with a man holding a door for me. It's polite, just as pulling out or offering up a chair is. I don't feel that a man who does these things is intruding into my independence. But, for these type of things, I think it should go both ways. If a man is right behind me as I'm going into a building, I'll hold the door for him. It's just a nice thing to do, for anybody.

    The coat over the puddle I don't think is necessary. I'd either just jump over it or slosh right through it, so I wouldn't expect anyone to dirty their clothes on my account.

    Where it would get insulting for me is if every decision was made for me without my input. (The ordering off the menu example Nozomi mentioned fits into this. I wouldn't be comfortable with that.) Generally, I don't like being the one to make the plans, but I do like to feel that my opinion is being listened to and respected. And I think the attitude behind the chivalrous acts matters- ie someone really trying to be kind, versus someone who actually thinks of women as weaker and in need of assistance.

    Too many people in my town say Chivalry is dead... sad thing is it's not. There are the rare few, I one of the hapless romantics, that hold onto these beliefs. Like I would hold the door open and pull out the chair but for ordering I would ask them what they wanted. For the coat I would probably guide them around the puddle. As for protecting... hah ummm yeah... I would probably give my life to save someone I truly cared about, friend or loved one...

    GrandShadow I accept your challange.

    nowadays most "chivilry" is just opening a door for someone or the offering a seat thing. the door thing i'll do but the seat thing would only be for family or eldery. no way i'm giving up my seat to some random person without a reason.

    Thats the kind of Chivalry I do. I'm just that nice. No matter what, I just do something really nice.

    I'd like to think I practice chivalry to an extent. Holding doors, yeah I do it for everyone though. Toss a coat over a puddle, no (but only because my girl likes the rain ). Get women and children to safety during a robbery? I don't mind protecting people in general, but if someone else wants to step out and be the meat shield, then by all means. Pull out chairs, yeah, another kind thing to do.

    Best damn morals to live by imho

    I agree, and that goes for men and women.

    I don't see that happening very often. I think people's senses of self-preservation are too high for them to put themselves in harm's way for someone else (particularly if these are strangers). Now, if you're somewhere getting robbed and you're with your spouse and child, that'd be different.

    I love it how hardly anyone in this thread can spell chivalry correctly, yet can go off on little tangents about it.

    I can spell chivalry. I just spelled it now. And I'll do it again. CHIVALRY. Chivalry, chivalry, chivalry, chivalry, chivalry. They probably just messed up while they were typing.

    I sure didn't mispelled chivalry either so don't even look at me. Also, living for freedom & things that are positive depends on the female & male. Mostly females I think. The females might want to go crazy & do something that you know is wrong or want you to go & cheat on your own spouse so chivalry goes either way for that part.

    Huh? Are you saying females are more likely to do this than males? What are you basing that on?

  16. Autopsy

    Autopsy #3 Nelliel Tu Oderschvank

    That sounded like some sexism right there.

    That can easily be applied to men. You can't just say that women can go off doing things that are wrong, and give the impression that men are perfect little angels who don't put social restraints on women to prevent them from expressing themselves or develop over-blown and phallic based egos based on the fact that society trains little boys to think that they're naturally more dominant than their female counterparts.

    EtherealSummoner Lamentations 3:22-26

    That's also true Autopsy, but then there the names that people give to females who are terrible. Sluts, whores, b's, you name it. Some men don't really know how to use chivalry & there are women who just wants to be nasty & just want their men to do terrible things. I'm only directing this to the chivalry part of living for everything that's good. Some people thinks of males as toys & some thinks of females as their own property. -___- We all know what happened with the women in the past since they didn't have certain rights.

    ...And what happened when women didn't have civil rights, Brandon?

    Let's see... back in the day, women wasn't able to vote, women was sometimes was accused as witches, sometimes was stoned to death, cannot do any other jobs except teaching, being a mother, or be a nurse. Those are examples of one. Women wasn't able to fight in the war long ago too. Lost their freedom on that part. Wasn't chivalry was used in those country dances or something? I can't remember. Anyways, I don't have anything else about chivalry freedom, but about using chivalry to never abandon a friend, well... that can be hard.

    *Bolded* Mancandy, Manwhore, Boy Toy, faggot. Women aren't the only ones given sexual mean names.

    *Italics* Women acting at least slightly human is called common sense. Besides that there are quite a few bisexual people who dont fit into either of your black and white packages there BWM. Yeah, some people are scumbags and yeah that means men and women but Chivalry is a guy thing look it up on dictionary.com and it will tell you the exact same thing.

    I just copied those from the dictionary under examples. Honestly I think that stepping in front of someone to get shot instead is a bit too much for someone to remember on a first date.

    Really it all boils down to this, yeah some chivalry isn't exactly nessesary anymore for example I think it would be a bit awkward if I was out to dinner witha guy and he kept standing up every time I entered or left the room or put his jacket down over the puddle so that I didn't have to get my feet wet when I could just as easily walk around the puddle.

    But stuff like opening the door for a date or offering your seat to an old woman or random person on a bus is great and I really respect guys who still do that kind of thing.
