Can Social Media Make You Anti-Social?

Well, the thread title kind of says it all. What do you think about it?

I do think social media can make people anti-social. I think a lot of people spend more time on Facebook or Twitter or texting each other than they do having face-to-face conversations. And I think things like Facebook can be isolating at times, because when you're posting something for your friends to see, you're going to want to post things in the best light and show off. And no one's life is perfect, and we know that, but when all your friends are posting about the amazing vacation they just had, or the news of their engagement, or that they just got a big raise at work, or their perfect grades in school, and you're going through a bit of a rough patch, I think it can make someone feel left out and a little like a failure, which isn't going to encourage you to put yourself out there and be more social.

And I've seen that the American Psychiatric Association is planning on including Internet Use Disorder (or Internet Addiction) as a new mental health disorder in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders. Something to think about.

But then again, for someone who's naturally shy, I think social media can be a help. So I think it's really about moderation.

Me and my friend were actually discussing this earlier today, and i completely agree with you. Everytime i go to be around people, most if not all of them are buried in their phones like 80 percent of the time. Its like a psychological addiction. I know a lot of people have the will power to not succumb to such things no matter how long they are exposed, but i see far too many people these days just buried in their phones or ditching plans to stay home and be on the computer.

It always makes me wonder if people's lives are really that busy and exciting that they need to share it all the time. I know mine sure isn't. o_O It's a major pet peeve of mine when people are on their phones when they're trying to conduct business (like texting at a checkout counter, or especially when parents come in to pick up their kids at my school and they can't even look up from what they're doing long enough for me to tell them about their kids' day).

I can't remember what website I was looking at when I made this thread, but they had some surveys up, and something like 45% of the respondents said that they had missed some important familial or otherwise important event because they were too busy Facebooking or Tweeting about it. That's kind of sad.
