Affirmative Action

Well, the Supreme Court recently took a case concerning affirmative action and enrollment procedures at the University of Texas, and the debate section here is a wee bit barren, so why not bring it up here and argue it out amongst ourselves? What do you think about affirmative action? Is it fair? Should it be continued? Discuss. ^_^

Affirmative action is awful. People should be gauged on what they can do. Thats it. With Affirmative action, we have thousands of unqualified people doing jobs they cant handle, and that is just stupid.

I think there was a time when affirmative action was needed and helpful. Now, though, I'm not so sure it is. I think everyone should be judged by their own merits, not their race, or their gender, or some other genetic coin toss. While I realize that sometimes there's an unfairness in this because I think the best schools are in affluent areas, which I also think tend to be more likely populated by whites, whereas the worst schools are in poor, inner city areas and tend to be populated moreso by minorities, I think affirmative action sometimes bends over too much to help minorities and ends up hurting whites instead. And I don't think that's equality.

@Luke So... are you saying that affirmative action shouldn't be used for those in the minority groups who actually have a determined will to do good in school and that they cannot go into a better school that is usually populated by whites or even in a specific job category? If so, then I am ticked because for me, I want to transfer to the college that is able to benefit me and to show them that I am capable to do just as much as the whites.

Then show them. That's what Luke is saying. People should not be handed things simply because they are part of the minority.

I recall a story where somebody (A white person) was denied acceptance to something (Don't remember if it was Med school or something different) due to the last spot being given to somebody who was a minority (I think he was Native American), even though the person denied was more qualified than the person who was given the spot. I don't know about you, but I find that to be a bunch of BS.

If you want to go to a better school, you work your ass off and get the grades, do the community service, and whatever else the school needs for admittance, and you earn your way in. You don't rely on your race letting you slide by.

Well, that's basically what the lawsuit that's been taken to the Supreme Court is about. A white girl was denied admission to the University of Texas despite having the same, or better, qualifications as minority students who were accepted. And I agree, that's BS.

It should be as to whether or not the person is capable of doing the job that they want to pursue and if they have the skills for it.

And you think there are some who do not do that? Why would someone would even try to rely on their skin color or ethnicity to even sly their way into a university? God KNOWS I am not aiming for that. Scholarships, financial aid, they all apply affirmative action in one way or another (And I do believe that they do). If a school is not going to take that girl in because of skin color, oh well. I hope she finds a better college that can accept her. It is nice that the schools are going after minorities who have sufficient talents that they are looking for but just to rely on skin color is not the way to go and that I do agree.

And as for this girl at the University of Texas, if it was not about... skin color, then what if the college denied her because of skill even if she matches up or triumphs over someone in the same department? Now what if the college decides to choose someone else over her who is able to do the job for a different reason who may like the person's attitude in contrast to the girl? There are many criteria that the school may be looking for and who knows what the college will favor.

Certainly there are some getting accepted who otherwise wouldn't if they weren't minorities. So yes, I think there are some people who skate by because of their race. It's one thing for an organization like the NAACP to create a scholarship for minorities only (just like the National Organization for Women could create a scholarship for women, or a teacher's association could sponsor would-be educators), but a public institution should not favor one race over another, and when they take race as a criteria for admissions, that's what they're doing.

This comment irritates me. Just, oh well? Combined with your comment about how affirmative action is inherent throughout the admissions process, it seems a little unfair to me. How well would it go over if someone publicly refused a black person admission only because they were black? Would there be an "Oh well, better luck at the next college" for that person, too?

From what I read, it seemed pretty obvious that race was the reason the girl was denied. I don't think the college is even trying to deny this. The fight is over whether or not they should be allowed to do it, not whether or not they did do it.
