Typically you don't want to make yourself into a character. If you did that, why not just write a fanfic - ya' know? Using traits that you yourself have is all well and fine. These are fictional characters and as authors you can't help but put a little bit of yourself into them. I do it tons of times, tbh, and it doesn't hurt. Giving a character a similar fault as yourself, or good trait if you do that, is okay. It helps make them to be better characters.

Another thing about characters with your personalities or traits is that, its kinda hard not to put those things in. I'd be lying if I told you out of all of my characters I haven't placed some trait of mine in them. Even an insane assassin I wrote had some common traits with me.

So most I can really say about characters that are like you, is that its okay to sprinkle yourself into your characters - good guys and bad guys alike - just as long as you don't turn the character into you.

Hey I'd like to inform you about Roaring Flames little... problem. He is poking his nose in other peoples business and not just normal members, but Admins like Toph as well. Just thought I'd inform you about it.

Average Amy has never stepped foot outside the city, and one day after a bad stand with a few guys gets herself dragged out into the country. After managing to escape the pathetic bonds that hold her she slips off into the wilderness where she calls forth the mystic powers she never knew she had and tames said wilderness within hours.

Difference here is not only did this city girl get out of whatever was holding her like a master thief, but she manifests powers, uses them, and becomes some sort of awesome super-druid. Not so believable right?

Well when you write your characters and their story these are things that'll be looked at. You really can use the same type of character and they can play differently.

Your baddy is really bad? Okay its a running theme with bads. Super-genius? That too. Maniacal laughter? Running down the check list - ya' know?

So long as the character isn't doing anything stupidly ridiculous, they should be fine.

There's a difference between using the same build of a character and playing them, and turning them into a Mary-sue. With a Mary-sue type character you've got them good at tons of things and suddenly as they need it. A good example would be something that doesn't run consistent to your characters background.

I'll use a simple farmer as my example. Say Simple Sam gets stranded in the city and through a series of events finds himself now shooting a bow like an expert for a mercenary group. Now say that group gets hit and demolished with only Simple Sam living. Simple Sam wants revenge to the max and decides he's going to use traps and sniping the gang who took out his friends.

If a person plays it write they can make it very believable. Why? Because as a farmer Sam could have already spent time with a bow and done some hunting, so he knows about baiting, tracking, snares, and a few other key things.

A not so believable, Mary-sue example? Coming up.

What I find out helps alot of the time with character creation - and even development - is taking a character and giving him 2 good traits and 1 bad, or vice versa. I don't think I have to point out to anyone here that good story is nothing without good characters. It's the characters that we love, not so much the world or the story it brings, but the characters we see that world through.

There's nothing wrong with having those character types. Most of the time as a writer you're supposed to write what you know - its how your writing comes off as believable and sound. Yeah there's some research involved but that's another fun step right?

If we take your mastermind, for a second, and look at him, what will we find? Good or bad, does he collect facts or does he spontaneously devise plans, etc.?
