I was very impressed by the opening ceremonies. I was very excited that the Olympics are in Beijing. It was better than Athens (2000) and Sydney (2004) combined.

My favorite Olympic sport is currently swimming due to the hopes for Michael Phelps.

I like the opening ceremonies too, it's one of my favorite parts of the whole event! My fave sport is also swimming mainly because Michael Phelps is from Maryland and I went to see the parade the state threw for him before he left. My second favorite sport is gymnastics because I just love seeing all the flips and stuff! : )

I love that hot asian chick dancing on top of the men. She was so enchanting. Even though China treat its people like property, they do know how to throw a party! I was excited watching it!

Lol! I fell asleep before it started! But I taped it and watched it! It wasn't that bad!

The ceremony was filled with symbolism. The lady being supported represents how many people make the accomplishments of the individual possible.

The Opening ceremonies didn't wow me...quite frankly, I found them quite boring. I'm probably being 'uncultured' but I can't enjoy the artsy fartsy stuff when:

    a) The air looks like pea soup
    b) Human rights in China are a thing to be touched up on.

I mean, it's pretty horrible, but I found myself cracking jokes about how whenever someone was out of formation, they'd probably shoot them and yell "REPLACE THEM!" and that's why the choreography worked. (Horrible yes...but I assure you I'm not racist. My girlfriend is Chinese. I just don't stand for what they're doing over there)

I did enjoy the fireworks...I must say, the firework choreography was stunning. But the rest...sorry, but I found it boring. (I'm being honest about it at least!) I'm sure a lot of thought went into it, and there are centuries of culture packed into a few hours...but nah. Give me Sydney and Athens any day. (I'm more curious how London will close the ceremonies)

    -------

The thing I don't understand, is how can someone say "My favourite sport is currently (whatever) because of this athlete." Doesn't that contradict the word 'favourite?'

A better reiteration might be, "I'm most looking forward to swimming because Phelps has great potential" or "I'm excited to watch swimming because ..."

Not to be nitpicky or smug about it, it's just I'm curious about peoples' real answers to the question...that is, which sports you prefer to watch that don't change...not just who the hot topic is.

My favourite sports to watch include gymnastics, fencing, archery, boxing, wrestling, and weightlifting...mostly because those are my 'hobbies' in a sense. I've done each at some point in my life (except gymnastics: I enjoy that one because I breakdance and it's the closest thing to it). I also like the field events (I was my highschool's shotputter and longjumper), but not the track events so much.

To answer the other question, this year I'm going to pay close attention to Rowing...as Adam Van Koeverden is a classmate of mine (a Canadian hopeful).

Waterpolo looks confusing. I just saw the Women's Diving competition and I thought the Chinese perfect it. I think they have a small body frame that it is easy for them to bend and twist at will. They did it sync-perfect. USA needs work.
