Pick the sword in the beggining unless you prefer magic.

 

Try get to about level 10 before leaving the islands. It will help with the reccomended level for other worlds

 

Or at least try to get the scan ability. You get it at level 15 with the sword, but a lower level with the staff, and a higher level with the shield.

 

The pretty stones are things you can sell for munny. You can gain experience by beating Tidus, Wakka, Selphie, or Riku (if you can still fight him). If you beat Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie, you can talk to Tidus to fight all three of them at once.

And as for your questions, they are items that you can use to make items or sell for moola.

You can but they only like 10 exp. I think. I think you should level up further on in the island, past that. You still have long ways to go before you leave the island.

The only other enemies you will fight is when you get the keyblade. But when you get it, you will have to leave the islands.

 

I suppose. After all, you can still save there.
