Mistranslations in KH2

A fun lil factoid thread :3

Fun fact. Several parts of Kingdom Hearts 2 were mistranslated by the localization team. These translation errors include a hilarious misspelling of Braig:




These mistranslations also include cutscenes as seen in probably the most well known error:


This scene threw many for a loop back in the day myself included. However after all the theories were thrown and discussions made it turned out this was an error in localization.

You see here in the original Japanese sub titles:




What Roxas is actually saying here isn’t described by a pronoun such as “he” or “she” or anything gender specific.

Rather what Roxas is asking is more akin to “Why did it pick you?” or most likely “Why were you chosen?”

Roxas of course saying this in relation to the keyblade itself as it was the mystery of why Roxas himself could wield that plauged him at times as we seen in Days or scenes from KH2 of Roxas leaving the Organization.

Roxas was Sora’s nobody and so if he could understand why Sora was chosen then perhaps he could understand why he himself had been.

Cultural Differences


One last thing to point out isn’t so much a translation error as a difference in culture. There weren’t many but some questioned what Ansem the Wise meant when he “wrote report 0″ as seen here:

There’s no real error here but just a difference in culture. You see in Japan they dont start their numerical count at 1 but 0.

SOOOOO ironically this was one thing that was translated accurately but shouldn’t have been since the Ansem reports themselves in Japan start at 0 whereas in our versions of the game they begin at 1.

Basically Ansem the Wise, aka DiZ, was saying he only ever wrote KH1 Ansem’s Report #1 while Xehanort wrote the rest.

Probably what I find the funniest thing in PS2-KH2.
Sooo pardon the…perviness here but continuing the Fun Facts thing I’m doing I thought I minds well show you guys one of the more hilarious moments in the game history. (well imo)

In the original PS2 version of Kingdom Hearts 2 someone actually went through the trouble of modeling Kairis panties and did so with a level of detail many other character models have outwardly.

This was edited out of the 2.5 version of the game a decade later but for anyone with the old disc, willing to fight the camera, or curious enough to search youtube you can still see this rather hilariously perverted moment. haha

I'm not Japanese authority either, it's just something I remembering seeing a bit of in the earlier days. I do know the jist of what the translation is supposed to say though.

Sadly. Good localization can make or break something really. I hated Days but it's DS game had one of the better localizing teams of the series I think.

 

I see one image in your signature but I also see "" above it. Perhaps it's a browser issue.

It was something that bothered many or confused them at least at one point. I've seen it was Riku, I've also recently learned there was even a theory that said it was Axel.
I remember when I first played KH2 I was clueless and wondering who "he" was in general. I'm kinda sad it wasn't fixed in 2.5.
