Is It Worth Getting A Current Gen Console?

So, this is the thread in which I boldly admit that I'm about a decade-and-a-half behind in the technological trend of gaming systems. Mostly, the reason has been either the lack of money, or the spending what little of it I was making on what were ultimately more important things (like car repairs, etc).

However. with my employment situation starting to look up a little more, I may be looking ahead to a bit of an entertainment splurge in the future.

I'm curious, though... It seems, from my research, that both of the gaming giants (Microsoft and Sony) may already have their next generation waiting in the wings. Is it worth it, at this point in time, to invest in the current generation of systems (so long as I can sure up the expendable money?) Or would it be more prudent to wait out a bit to catch up with whatever comes next?

I would wait a bit. The PS4 Neo and the XBox 1 S are coming up soon, and those are essentially upgraded versions of the PS4 and Xbox 1. Additionally the next gen consoles are coming up, with the Nintendo's NX coming out in March and the Xbox Scorpio coming out sometime in the nearish future. Not sure about Sony's next gen Playstation though.

    This generation was depressingly short.

Yeah. That has been my default mindframe. No sense in getting a console that's just gonna get outdated in a year.

That and a console isn't really in my top priorities. Hell, a new laptop is above that one at this point.

As someone with a PS2 and an Xbox 360, I wouldn't know anything about having current gen consoles :p, but I agree with DW, I would wait a bit, especially if new consoles are on the way. Unless you're expecting to come into a whole lot of money and there are some current games you're really desperate to play, but it doesn't sound like that's the case.

I'm expecting some money, but not a whole lot. If my seasonal job transitions onto a steady line of work though, I might be in better fortunes.

Always wait. Unless you trade in or have been planning. Regardless always wait. Jumping the gun on a console early can backfire bad.

Yeah. I doubt I have anything worth trading in at this point. The only gaming system I've left that I'd be willing to part with at all is my PS2, but I wouldn't want to part with it without knowing that I could get something to replace it before long.

I'll also say, that I've been struggling with the decision between going console or PC, but I think that may be a topic for another thread.

Go ahead and buy. You'll be waiting a year or two before anything besides the Switch is released.

I have yet to buy me a PS4 so I may wait for the PS4 Neo. I am grabbing me the Nintendo Switch... as long it is backwards compatible for the Wii U.

Not sure if anyone will still be tapped into this conversation after so long, but I've been pondering my next gaming buy, and I think I am, after much thought to it, set on liking to get a console down the road (finances allowing, of course). I'd say I'm leaning pretty heavily towards Sony in that department, mostly, I'll admit, because nostalgia and whatnot.

Assuming I can make the purchase within the next two to three months, is there anything that drastically sets, the PS4 apart from its Pro counterpart that I've been seeing? At least, such that it would be more beneficial to go with the PS4 Pro?

Ps4 Pro is pretty sweet but I think you can get away with just getting a 4

From what I can tell, the selling point is that the Pro can play games (that are compatible) and stream from services like Netflix at 4K. It's also apparently got an upgrade as far as memory and speed.

As a casual gamer, I'd stick with the regular old PS4, in part because there are apparently only a small number of titles that take advantage of the new features as of now and in part because of the cost difference. But I suppose if graphics are really important to you, it might be worth it to upgrade to Pro.

Black Friday was the chance to get a PS4!

    $250 plus a $30 Walmart Gift Card

Those things were selling like hotcakes. But really, there's no point in waiting, the next consoles will be anything from $400 - $500, and either be upgraded a year later.

PS4 games will continue after the PS5's release so there's not a problem to really worry about. Heck they just came out with PS4 Pro. Are they honestly going to hit the market with a new console after releasing yet another PS4 console? That's the indicator right there.

I was working on Black Friday. And didn't have the money then. Lol. I still technically don't have the money, unless I push back getting a new laptop, which, if my current work holds me for a while longer, might be feasible. Hell, if they decide to hold me for another month or two, or longer, I'll probably splurge a bit.

Tbh the only real difference I think is the pro lacks a headset thing/plug. The extra memory and power is nice but you'd be fine with just one of those new slimmer PS4s if you want one. I upgraded for memory but you could probably get 2TB hard drive or higher (so long as it fits the PS4) and a slim for about t he same price as a Pro is depending on where you go.

    Mhmmm.

I probably won't fret much about storage space on the console. I probably won't come close to filling 500gb on a hard drive.

In all likelihood, I'll be seeking out a ps4 on a good deal after my new computer comes in, so I can put the money from selling my old one into the purchase.

Then that new slim model is your best bet. I've seen many are just keeping the old PS4 as well and putting money into a new hard drive. There's no real difference between slim and OG besides the OG's design and having that headset plug shooter fans love.

Well. I've had my PS4 for a little over a month now, and it's been mostly (an excursion last night being the exception) good times.

In peoples' honest opinion(s), am I well off completely ditching the old PS2? Or would it mostly be worth holding onto, either for the sake of being somewhat 'retro' or waiting for it to be worth a little more within that retro market?

If you have an old system, keep it till it breaks. Always, forever.

I've got mine boxed away somewhere. I think it would be good to hold onto, just in case you get an urge to replay a game that you wouldn't be able to otherwise. I've still got my copies of .Hack//G.U. and Battlefront 2 (Y'know, the good Star Wars Battlefront) available if I ever feel like replaying them.
