Final fantasy 7 finally after all the waiting. So thoughts? What do you think will change? how do you think the gameplay will be affected. Personally i think they will do away with the old turn based approach and give us something a bit more modern. something closer to the KH3/FF15 style.

... and the fanboys collectively lose their minds.

My thoughts on a FFVII remake haven't changed much over the years. It's not something I've looked forward to. But I can't deny that graphics-wise, at least, VII is probably the game that's held up the worst over the years, and a remake on a new system may help introduce new fans to the franchise.

As far as changes go, I hope they keep the music the same. FFVII had a truly beautiful soundtrack. Besides that, I don't know. I liked VII's gameplay as it was, so I'd prefer that not too many things change. It'd be nice if they fixed the horrific English translation ("This guy are sick!", Off course!, and so many more). Maybe integrate the optional characters into the story more?

Editing the ending to show Yuffie and Vincent actually taking place in the final battle would be nice.

I must admit I was quite surprised to hear they were finally making the remake. Especially after some of the stupid excuses they've made for not making it. "FFVII is the best FF game ever so we won't remake it until we make an FF game that is better than it." Really? Stupidest excuse I've heard. FFVII is the most popular, but definitely not the best.

The funny thing is that not all of the game's fans are super hyped about it. There are plenty who have lost so much faith in Square Enix over the past 8~10 years that they have zero faith in this game. And I can't wait to hear all the disappointment when this remake doesn't live up to expectations. They're gonna change something or another that plenty of the fans will whine about. Hell, I hear that a major complaint about the FFX remastered version was that it didn't have the original music. Not that I had ever noticed.

Lol, someone actually said that? VII is a good game, but it's not that good. Wonder what recent game they think is better?

Yeah, I'd like that. I know that they're optional, but I'm pretty sure most people got them, anyhow, so it's only right that they should be included in the ending.

For sure. There's no way they can please everyone. And trying to cater too much to the fans will probably make things worse.

For me, a lot of the music is iconic, and tied really closely with my gaming experience/nostalgia. So, expecting to hear "To Zanarkand" and getting something entirely new would be off-putting to me. Were I to play the VII remake (which assumes at some point I break down and buy a PS4), I would be one of those fans whining about the music if it were changed.

Personally i think i've gotten over the Turn based style especially for it to cater to a new generation. i think something more modern is in order. Something like the KH/FF14 style. keeping the party system of course. Though to be completely fair i never finished FF7, lost the last disc somewhere as a child lol.

It's what I know best, so it's what I prefer. But that's just me. ;) Regardless, I don't think changing the gameplay would necessarily be a deal breaker, whether or not I'd prefer the old ways. I'd be more upset with big changes made in the story- like if they went back and changed it so Aerith lived, or something .

I bought FFX remastered and have yet to play it all the way through because every time I'm in a random encounter I have a brain aneurysm from the jarring wicked bad guitar solo. I don't know why they do that with remakes, the original FF on the NES as another example. It had such iconic music that, in every update I've seen, has been ruined completely to the point that I have to play it muted (or I just pass on it and play the original).

That being said, I truly do hope they keep FFVII's music and simply re-sample it as opposed to converting everything to bad ass rock music. "Maybe we can be more American if we emulate American music (from 1993)?"

    ---------------

I'm not going to lie, I was quite thrilled to hear about this...enough to buy a PS4 if I don't have one by then. The game has a lot of unexplored possibilities, 3D Modelling as opposed to a 3D sprite running around on a painted background will do a lot for player immersion.

I'm debating with myself as to whether I'd like a faithful graphics update, or a massive reinterpretation. The story should definitely remain intact, but changing up the dungeons/locations significantly would be fine by me. Imagine being able to explore the other sectors of Midgar by train discovering new side quests or even new characters... exploring those reactors in a less streamlined manner. An all new Gold Saucer, with all new games would be a welcome addition/modification (despite having had a love affair with the old one). Changing the precise nature of how Aeris dies would be a good idea as well (though I'm all for keeping her dead), as that would make it a bit less predictable and more of a shock like when we first played through the PSX original. Like I can imagine (for example) having Aeris survive beyond where we expected her to die, participate in the battle with Jenova LIFE (2 minutes later), only to have Sephiroth burst through Jenova's rotting corpse to stab her...that's the sort of thing I mean, nothing drastic, but just enough to throw us for a loop.

I do hope they don't stray too far from the original battle system (maybe something like FFXIII at the worst, pseudo-turn based) as the Materia system was fantastic...and 98% of the reason why I loved that game. I have trouble envisioning what that would look like in a purely arcade/adventure based battle system.

I think @Mike should be in charge of making the game, because I agree with just about everything he said. Especially:

That would be so awesome. It would fake me out enough to put me in a fangirl rage, then bam! Aerith's death was spoiled for me the first time I played VII, so it would be cool to get a shock out of it this time.

    and

I agree. Also, the Materia system was woven into the story; it'd be weird for them to change it too much.

I'm almost starting to get excited about this game. o_O

I think that was literally Square's official statement on the idea of the FFVII remake.

I'm not sure if it would be catering to the fans or not. People have been begging for 10 or so years now for a remake. And if it isn't the same game with a massive graphic update, then it isn't a true remake. And the more hardcore fans will be upset about it.

I don't think any of the big music things were changed. Again, I never noticed the change in the first place.

It is a shame if you haven't been able to finish it. The Dark Aeons and Penance are a nice addition to it. But I hear they're putting the remastered version of PS4 and that they're putting the original music back onto it.

No kidding. I've been replaying FFVII these past few weeks and one of the things I hate are the painted backgrounds. There are just some parts of it that the details are harder to notice. Sometimes I can't tell what is a path or not.

I heard that they are in fact making changes to the gameplay and to the story. Gameplay changes I don't mind too much, but the story edits are a very thin wire to go across. I assume at the very least they are going to update the story to fit in more with the FFVII Compilation.

And you've never once gotten it from PSN?

    Ahhh....love this thread. Such nostalgia!

It might sound stupid, but the jarring music is literally the only reason I haven't beaten it yet - hence a PS4 version with the original music would suit me just fine, so I desperately hope what you've heard is correct. I'd buy it again (for the third time, if you count FFX/2 on the PS2) if that were true!

Like adding flashbacks of Genesis and Angeal? That would be awesome IMO!

I wonder if the Vita version has original music (I only have it for my Vita and, again, I have never noticed music difference).

    Anyways, http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/final-fantasy-x-x-2-hd-remaster

The very first user review I saw said that the PS4 version can switch between the original and new soundtracks.

Meh. I hated Genesis while playing Crisis Core. I really did. In fact, I still do. Angeal was fine, but Genesis? Ugh.

Sweet! Thanks a lot, I'll be picking this up when I get a PS4.

    Wrong. It's FFX. xD

But as for the FFVII remake, I really do not mind. I do not know why people would even want to complain about music change (Which is more of amateur Youtube complaints really in my perspective and they did it with X). If they add in an instrument to a music, then a player will complain about (This music is better than this). Don't even know why it should even matter even in VII case and it is all about preference. I can see SE adding in the option to pick either the original or remastered music style as the player plays the game the same way they did with X.

As for keeping Aerith alive, I am actually against it. Aerith is supposed to be praying so just seeing her dead while casting a spell through prayer is the shock value to bring to players. The martyr's death the way I see it. Please keep Aerith dead for nostalgia's sake.

I dub the title of this game, Final Fantasy XVI, because that's basically what they are doing here. Everything from the original is being pretty much scrapped except the story.

Once again, that was Square's official statement. And if we're gonna talk about the best FF, everybody who has actually played them knows that either FFVI or FF Tactics is the best FF game.

I've never seen it that way. If it is the story of FFVII, then it would be FFVII even if other things like the game mechanics change.
