Taken from Google because god forbid I use my brain today, "RPG Maker is a program that allows users to create their own role-playing video games. Most versions include a tile set based map editor, (tilesets are called chipsets in pre-XP versions), a simple scripting language for scripting events, and a battle editor. All versions include initial premade tilesets, characters, and events which can be used in creating new games. One feature of the PC Versions of RPG Maker programs is that a user can create new tilesets and characters, and add any new graphics he/she wants."

Basically, just about any average joe with an imagination can create their own little games with RPGMaker. Some are hits, some are misses. They're also an easy download--just extract them from something like winrar into a folder and on you go.

I played one called Alice mare last night and it was a fantastically written game. I love RPGMaker games because they don't require too much time and can usually be completed within a sitting or two. My favorites are Ib, Mad Father, (now) Alice mare, Ao Oni (it's kind of stupid but it was fun to play), and The Witch's House.

Have you heard of/ever played any? What are some of your favorites? Any recommendations?

Actually my old college roomate used this program to make a fully fleshed out game. It has some good elements and if they added more to it, it could be a REALLY good indie game kit. it's really lacking though. But for people looking to get into game design and rpg's this is the perfect place to start.

I had a forum buddy who used this to make a game version of an rp we did years and years ago, and it turned out pretty cool, though I don't think he ever completely finished it. That was the only RPGMaker game I've ever played, but I can see how there'd be some really fantastic games available out there.

I've never played any, but I would like to. Is there certain places I could play them? Or is it a site?

I made one of these way back in the day! It was utter trash however, as I did it entirely on my own, back when I was convinced that I was going to be the world's up and coming game designer (this was before indie gaming was big).

    Good old RM2K...so outdated.
