    Wayward's Stock of Theatrical Endeavors

After some deliberation, I've decided to share some of the things that I've created over the course of the past year or so as part of my theatre studies. Thus far, this roster will be inclusive of scenic painting work and some makeup art that I've done, and will be updated as I transition my work onto my computer.

    Scenic Art

    "Ivan 'The Blind' Dragon"
    Spring 2014

This work was done as part of my scenic painting final. Using this as my reference image, used a tracing technique, putting the outline of the dragon image onto a transparency sheet and projecting onto the flat (aka the canvas). I used charcoal pencils to trace the outlined image onto the flat, then proceeded to go over the lines in black paint, which created the spaces between the individual 'stones' that comprise the dragon. During a late-night painting party I finished the work by filling in the colors, I attempted to incorporate a high-light and shadow effect, which you can see in the tail, but I hadn't a lot of experience in working with the odd sort of shaping of the scales and horns, so I figured I'd cut my losses on that and keep it as much as it was as I could. I set the dragon image on a stone look, mostly because stone has been something that I've been particularly good at achieving.

Fun Fact: The title of 'Blind' alludes to some comments I received on how the dragon's eyes lacked pupils, to which I responded by reasoning that the dragon was blind.
Fun Fact: That is, of course, me kneeling behind the work; so anyone here that's ever wondered what I look like, there you go (granted that was also about 40lbs ago now).

    Make-Up Art

    "Turtle Hand"
    Spring 2014

The project that birthed this required the construction of a monster hand. It was made using liquid latex, toilet paper and cotton balls to outfit a work glove. I had originally planned on making something more like a swamp monster, having cut out webbing from latex sheets for between the fingers. But I was having difficulty working them between the fingers so they'd stick. That being the case I decided to play around with cotton balls, and ultimately arrived at the idea of making a sort of turtle shell on the hand. I spent most of my free time that day finishing the shell, coating the cotton balls with liquid latex and painting over everything with acrylic paint. Looking back I think it could have used some more variation in color; but overall, I'm satisfied with work.

    "Death by Toothpick"
    Spring 2014
    [IMG]
This was part of challenge, of sorts. Two hours prior to the taking of this photo, I was presented with an envelope, the contents of which I did not know. The challenge was to work an effects makeup job using the items in the envelope. As you can plainly see, the item I received was a set of toothpicks. They were affixed to my face using a combination of cotton and liquid latex to create entrance and exit wounds. I then worked around them with my bruise colors (a light red, dark red an purple) for that irritated skin effect and dabbed around some of my fake blood in places.

I always enjoy looking at theatre makeup creations. The thing you did with the toothpicks was pretty cool. I've messed around with creating fake wounds before and I've found that instead of layering on liquid latex which sometimes makes it look too chunky, you can try ripping up tissue paper and dipping it in fake blood and water, brushed on top with black pigment. It really makes it look even more realistic.

I had never thought of that. Granted I had never taken be time to experiment with the adhesiveness of my fake blood; I'll have to pick up some more and try it (my instructor was all about wound work, so I ran out of the material for that really quickly).

Usually I don't use a lot of the latex, or rather, not built up so much (typically just enough to adhere things like tissue paper and whatnot to my face). The projects for this passed spring, however, focused on producing pre-fabricated pieces; we made latex bullet wound molds that we can pretty much reuse a few times over, for example. Blending the pieces with my skin had been a persistent difficulty, which probably contributes to the appearance of having been layered on too heavily.

I really can't add any comments, since I share no knowledge of theatre, but the challenge with the toothpicks is pretty interesting. What other types of make-up challenges have you done?
