This is a thread purely made to discuss or rant if you choose about films you feel are overrated. Now overrated doesn't always mean bad, it can simply mean that it doesn't live up to it's hype and can still be a good movie. But of course it applies to movies you personally see as bad, but in the mainstream is seen as good or even great. You can like the movie personally yourself too, but feel it's given too much credit or you feel that most audiences took something from it that it wasn't intended to give.

I'll start with a movie I think is overrated, and that is Moulin Rouge. I like this film, it's use of music and visuals can be very effective and beautiful. The use of Roxanne as a tango is breath taking to me and I spasm with excitement everytime I watch that scene. But Moulin Rouge is all style and no substance, it claims to be a film about love, and yet says almost Nothing about the concept at all. The love story is also an obvious rip off of Titanic, with the death being gender reversed and the antagonist between their love even more cartoony. The editing is also just horrible, seriously let the camera linger longer than two seconds!

I'll mention another overrated film after some people post or discuss further into Moulin Rouge. But seriously post a film you think is overrated!

^ I remember when Moulin Rouge came out, but somehow I never got around to seeing it. Don't think I'm missing much.

I thought James Cameron's Avatar was overrated. I think the graphics looked really nice (rented it from the library so I've never seen the 3D which is apparently so ground-breaking), but the story, while enjoyable, wasn't really anything special. I mean, it's pretty much just Pocohontas, except in space. None of the characters really intrigued me, and were it not for the graphics, I doubt the movie would have made anywhere near as much money as it did.

This! Every time when someone watches Avatar I warn them not to expect much but somehow they seem to like and hype it way more than it deserves.

I don't know why it didn't seem so great film to me, as all the elements were there what I like about movies - and it was said to be a breaking film for the industry but the story was boring (there were no elements of surprise, the cliche love story of two individuals from different worlds [Romeo and Juliet much?]) and the 3D-effect was the only cool thing about it. I never went to see it in theaters but I didn't lose anything, IMO. I don't get it how a film like Avatar would get all the hype in Oscars and all that.

^ Yeah, on the surface it has a lot of things that I would normally be interested in- a stranger in another world, a fantasy setting, a love story (and usually it doesn't matter how cliche- I love my rom coms), but I dunno. Part of the problem for me is that the movie was so massively hyped that it put me off from even seeing it for a long time after it came out. Hell, for the same reason I still haven't seen The Dark Knight or Inception, either, and I have both of them in my possession. A lot of movies are unoriginal, or follow a basic formula, but somehow Avatar seems even more cliche and unoriginal. Like I said, for a mindless popcorn movie on a boring day, I didn't dislike it, but greatest movie of all time, it aint.

Glad that I didn't watch Avatar then. Don't forget to throw in precious Twilight. Hopefully, The Hunger Games will not be overrated but will actually surprise and capture so many movie-watchers. My family watched "The Dark Knight Rises" but I didn't bother watching it. As for Inception, I saw that last year in class and I kept on falling asleep in class on it. -_- You fall asleep in a dream, then you try to find another place and put yourself in another dream and you continue on and on until you can find something to complete your mission. Then, you have to hurry and get back to reality before you are stuck in your dream and make sure you do not get killed while sleeping. That was soooo boring.

See, I don't know that the Twilight Saga (which sounds way too epic for the series) really counts, because I don't think any of the films are highly rated by anyone. I mean, fans watch them in droves, and even people who aren't fans somehow find themselves dragged to see them, but I don't know that anyone really thinks that they are well made movies or quality entertainment. Preteen chicks and their bored moms just go see them to drool over RPattz and Taylor Lautner.

Haven't you seen it yet, or are you talking about the franchise as a whole? I don't know that I would say that the first movie was over- or underrated. To me, what I'd heard about the film pretty much matched my thoughts after I was done watching it.

Another one that I thought was overrated was Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's another one that on paper has so many things going for it that I enjoy, yet somehow I couldn't stay invested in it at all. I could barely make it through to the end, and I felt ashamed because I felt like I should've liked it more and I just didn't.

I'd Say The Last Airbender Movie because, the Cartoon is awesome but it didn't need a movie to go along side it! (Plus it wasn't very good even though it got good ratings...)

^ The Last Airbender isn't really overrated, though, because the reviews were overwhelmingly negative. No one rates that movie highly.

@Biosaber- I agree about Sleepless In Seattle. And along with that, When Harry Met Sally. Both of those are kind of toted as classic chick flicks, but Sleepless creeped me out a little and When Harry Met Sally could only hold my interest in bits and pieces.
