'Normality'

Do you personally believe that the world would be better if everyone was roughly the same? For example, if everyone had the same culture, religion, looked more or less the same and liked the same things, would the world be a better place?

On one hand, there would be no ingenuity or creativity as everyone would have the same tastes. But there would also be no war caused by differing religions and ideals, and everyone would be given an equal chance to succeed.

    Discuss.

I think this is a simple answer for me! Would the world be a better place? Yes. Do I want to lose my own individuality? No.

The world would be a better place if we all were 'normal'. Meaning having the same morals, and beliefs. Would giving up your individuality worth it? Eh possibly.

Screw religion and screw about being normal. What is there left that is normal in this world? Everything is so corrupt that we are so blind to even see it. The answers are front of us to show that it is obvious but yet, wee are the blind leading the blind. Same religion? I guess you mean a One World Order then. I would rather have no religion for the one who created all things did not even start religion. Only man did.

I had too many Yuna moments to see that I really need to change my own self and not follow what everyone says. Why would everyone be the same? It is dumb and profound. Maybe you mean being the same as in mentally being fools, wanting to go after what is comfortable and take what is suppose to be normal "Such as helping out someone even if they were a bad person" and trying to make things abnormal.

If you ask me, I find it abnormal to even BE the same.

I think there would still be wars. And I think there would still be discrimination. People would just have to work harder to find things they don't like about each other.

So no, I don't think it would be an improvement if we were all more alike, not least because of the stifling of creativity that would come from that. I do think the world would be improved if people tried to be a little more empathetic towards each other, though.

Oh no, that's not what I meant by normal. I simply meant that everyone would be the same, whether they're 'normal' by our standards or not. I do agree that everyone would have to be fools to be the same, though. May I ask what kind of answers you're talking about?

As for my opinion, I more or less agree with Kitty in that whether we're different or not, there will always be something that we can use to discriminate and war with each other, so the loss of individuality may not be worth it.

I don't care if it is being "normal" to someone standards, that is still as though the person or group is trying to change to be like someone else. And as for answers that I am talking about:

    1. Dress codes in the school. We must bring the dress codes to the school so that all students will look the same and that no one will degrade one another and to promote our test scores. Oh wow. That's a joke. All of us want to dress appropriately and we know what clothing is not acceptable, but really. Since when did clothing became important for test scores? It has NOTHING to do with that. The students should have been raised at home as to how to dress right and the girls and the boys know not to be showing their chest, butts and legs so much. -.- And for some reason, I am still remembering that terrible system the assistant principle made up at the high school where she have girls down their sides and use their fingertips to see if their skirts or shorts are not long enough. <_< HELLOOOO! Some of these girls have long arms!

    2. Your daddy was this and your grandaddy was this and your great grandaddy was this. We expect you to be the same like them. So? What if I want to stray from that path and create my own job and company? "That is not the right way to go. They made money and you should do what they did for the money." So... are you saying that I should join a career in which I have no desire for just for money in exchange for a career that I really want to pursue, even though it may pay $2 less than what Granddaddy had?

    3. (This one here is what I have found out myself...) "And his name is the Lord!" The Lord? Huh? That sounds like a title. Why not call him by his real name? Isn't his real name is... "NOPE! His name is, The Word of GOD!". :/ But... as children of the Almighty, we should at least know him by his true name. Why call him God and some people do not even know who we are serving. "You must know that anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!" But... WHAT. IS. HIS. NAME? "The Lord Jesus Christ!" ... Isn't... *Sigh* never mind. "Do not fall to the devil's devices! We are christians!" ... But since when did God ever used religion... and doesn't it feels as though when one say "Yea. I mean, I am a Christian, ya know", it feels as though we are trying to give ourself a title or position ourself? Why not just be... "PRAISE YE THE LORD! HELP HIM!"

Those examples are what I am talking about. What makes you think that I should be "normal" to you to have the same career like someone before me? Why should I be normal to the "school's standards" when there are four different kids, two who wear appropriate clothings and two who does not, to the school, wear appropriate attires and all of a sudden, the kids who wore appropriate attires does not have as high of a test score as those who are wearing attires that is not deemed suited for high school? And why is it "Normal" not to question things because it is a common/popular belief and that all must abide by it? It sickens me.

Honestly, The world wouldn't change. It's literally impossible to think that way. Even if "everyone was the same", there would always be that one person who would want to stand out as an individual, who would want to gain power, which can cause wars at that. Individuality is what really defines us.

You misunderstand what I meant by "normal by our standards". I wasn't saying anything about heritage or individual standards(such as schools); what I meant was a new definition of normal, almost; that is, everyone having the same culture, tradition, race and preferences. Essentially, no one being considered abnormal.

Although you do have a point with the religion thing in that a lot of religious people follow a certain religion word for word and lose their individuality, but if everyone was of the same background, there would be no one trying to use religion and other things to give themselves a title, as you put it.

School dress codes are more about conformity than normality, and that's a whole other debate. By the way, that assistant principle's idea was pretty stupid, and I don't like dress codes either. In England, Japan and probably a few other countries, we all have to wear exactly the same uniform, and as far as I know, all it does is promote a sense of feeling like you're identical to everyone else. By the way, I'm playing devil's advocate. I don't personally believe that normality is best.

Abstract, you raise a good point that I can't argue with. You're right in that a world where everyone was the same would never last. But you misused the word 'literally'.

"Having the same race"? Now that is laughable. There is no way to change the sole race that a person came from. Also, conformity can lead to normality in one's mind. The more you try to change someone to your own viewpoint, the more they will come closer in accepting your ideas and it too will become normal to them. You want normal? Change the mindset of the whole world.

This is a purely hypothetical situation; of course people will never be all the same race, et cetera, but the question is: what if they were?

The problem is that you pre-suppose that similar people get along.

First, what constitutes normal? Let's take the ultimate gamble here: Suppose you, or I, or anyone, is our textbook definition of normal. Our world would, hence, be full of clones of that person.

There would still be war, I guarantee you, if the world was full of exact copies of myself. Not because of religious intolerence, or idealic differences....If for nothing else, because natural resources are not uniformly distributed, the "Me" that lives impoverished would certainly take their frustrations out on neighbours/wealthy versions of "Me." Sure, one can argue that we can uniformly distribute the resources so everyone lives equally, but we're not talking about building a utopia here: Is such a communist notion normal? I think I'd have trouble giving away my assets and living "normally" if I was a billionaire, and I think most people would.

Religion/Ideals are not the only thing that cause wars...in fact I'm convinced that it's in the minority of causes of war, but perhaps the most sensationalized, or recent, historical examples (WWII, etc.). If you go farther back, when people could not even communicate outside of their country's walls, what excuse is there for a country to simply go gung-ho and conquer another nation? Did the mongols try to conquer the world because they wanted to spread their notion of peace and love? Did Napoleon want to conquer Europe because he hated Muslims?

No, imho it comes down to two fundamental principles engrained in everyone (and hence are "normal."): Survival instinct, and greed. Natural resources once again.
