    Laughter.

The sound of laughter could be heard from that merry going park that sat behind the school, daily. And beyond that rested the woods. The small children of Linwood Falls loved that park. This was a place where they could play. A place where they could talk to friends. A place where they could be carefree. A place where, they thought, they would always be safe.

The quiet town of Linwood Falls was not always quiet and peaceful. There was a time where there was nothing but turmoil in the town, with children disappearing every week. Fires spewing left and right. For a long time, the town was abandoned, besides a few townsfolk. As everything began to grow more peaceful, things began to look good for this quiet town.

We grew up, ignorant to the questionable past that had plagued our town for decades, thinking the world was nothing but gumdrops and rainbows.

    It started with Alex Trebel.

He was 15 years old. He disappeared four months ago.

He had a tendency to run off into the woods, for no reason, ever since he was a child. Authorities assumed he did it this time and they just were too late to find him.

    Josh Flynch.

He was 16. He disappeared three months ago.

He had been having nightmares for years. Nightmares of a man coming to get him. It got so bad, his parents started to home school him. He was utterly terrified of the outside world. The last thing he said to me was to "get out of town" while I still could. I asked him why.

He disappeared that night. His doors were locked. His windows had been nailed down, an action he took a year ago, fearing that it was going to get him.

The police figured the only ones that could have done this were his parents. They're currently awaiting trial.

Joshua Bentley, Gary Smith, Cole Butler, Trinity Howard, and Kevin Bell.

Ages, seven, nine, eight, eight, and ten. They disappeared one month ago when the five of them went out into the woods together.

They all claimed that they had to go. That they had to go see their friend. They tried to take the other kids. When the adults asked why they wanted to go to the woods so badly, they all said that "The Tall Man" told them to. Their families have all moved away.

One week ago my brother told me that He wants the two of us now. I asked him who and my brother just smiled. Then he says that I promised. What promise? Hell, beats me. My brother has been acting strange for the last couple of months, before the disappearences. Going out into the woods with other kids while they're supposed to be in school or during their time at the park.

I need to figure out what's going on.

I need to find out what's going on with my brother.

I need to find out who's the Tall Man.

The school day now ended and kids of all ages began to flood the town as they retreated to their homes. A handful of the younger kids made their way to the playground in the park, along with some of the older kids who enjoyed hanging out in the park.

Around the slide, however, a small group of kids gathered around one boy.

    His name was Matthew Sigfreed.

"The Operator merely wishes for us all to be happier then we were before," he said quietly.

"Then why'd he take the others," a girl about the age of six said, "They didn't do anything."

Matt sighed and shook his head. "I told you. He led them on so that they may have better lives. They weren't truly happy." He looked up and over the others to see his brother approaching. "We will talk more tomorrow. The Messenger has spoken," he whispered. And like that, the other children walked off.

On the side, one of the newer kids in town leaned against a tree, watching Matt. "The.....Messenger?"

A young man was also walking back home, more specifically his foster home but that no longer mattered to him, he was simply looking for more leads about that one rumor. As he walked the wind began to pick up prompting Shuya to put on his headphones, a pair Sennheiser RS 120s, a last present from his father the christmas before he was murdered. As the music played it reminded him of the good old days back in Tokyo, as he walked through the park on his way home the music abruptly came to a stop, "... Did the battery die?" thought Shuya before whirling around to see a kid by himself, he walked over to the child. "... You shouldn't be here alone, where are your parents?" asked Shuya, his hair being ruffled by the wind.

Athena quietly walked on the sidewalk towards the playground, her head facing the ground as her black and blue hair mixed with the wind. After school, she would always head over to the swings and hang out there by herself. Where she does most of her thinking and sketching down her most trembling thoughts. She never did want to go home, with her father and everything, but sometimes, Athena was glad to be in the presence of him, other times, she wished he was dead.

As Athena rounded the corner to the playground, she noticed other small children fleeding from one particular boy, and from another direction, saw a older boy approach a younger one by a tree. Athena watched them as she walked forward for a bit, but then looked own again, as she didn't want to seem creeperish as everyone already thought she was based on her appearance. Just because she wears black on black day after day and listens to music no one has every heard of, more less enjoys, means she is weird or a creep. Stereotypical people nowadays, gets annoying.

Athena walked passed the kids and to the swings some feet away from the playground, distanced enough to not get invilved in whatever happened. She set her bag by the pole holding the swing up and sat down in a huff. Turning on her music she rocked her feet back and forth to keep herself moving on the swing.

Out of the shadows, an older boy, who towered over Shuya and Matt walked into view, his signature claws strapped to his back. He approached Shuya and lifted him by his skull. "Heeeeellllloooooo! HAHAHAHAHAHA! You mus' be that Shuya kid... what was it you feared... was it heights, death, or perhaps..." He leaned in and whispered maniacally in his ear, "Being alone?" He dropped the boy and patted him on the head, "Get outta here! And don't bother Matt here anymore. SCRAM!"

If Shuya feared the man with the claws he didn't show it, "You must be Deimos, the man under all that suspicion... if you continue to threaten me I'll call the police." said Shuya flipping open his phone, as he dialed 911 into his phone he eyed the man in his strange attire and then looked at his claws. "You must be stupid to carry those around, someone might have called the police already." said Shuya his finger resting on the "send" button of his phone.

The boy who stood in the shadows stared at the girl who just arrived in the park in astonishment. "She's...no. Pay attention Jason, no time to be distracted," Jason said to himself. He then turned his attention back to Matt and the other two boys.

Matt scoffed and looked at the downed Shuya. "If you couldn't tell, I'm not alone," he told him. He glanced up at Deimos and smirked. He had heard of Deimos through different people and other children. "Deimos."

Deimos' claws slashed the phone, destroying it instantly, though to the naked eye, his claws never left his back. "You're never alone little bro. I got your back." Deimos picked Matt up and placed him on his shoulders. "Now Shuya, unless you'd like to be all alone for the rest of your life, you'll get outta here and never bug me or my adopted brother ever again! Get outta here kid." Deimos wasn't really Matt's brother, but he was alone, and so was Matt. They decided that they'd stick together, forever.

A boy coughed behind Deimos, before a pair of knuckles cracked. "Afternoon gentlemen. Might I ask who this is with my little brother on his shoulder?" He growled, looking at Deimos with a cold anger in his eyes. "I will only ask once. Please put my brother down. Now." He said, striding to the front of the man, long car coat swaying as he walked, boots clicking with each step as he finally faced the man. "My name's Will. Will Sigfreed, and that's my brother your holding." He hissed, clenching his fists as he shifted on his feet, eyes scanning around. He noticed one boy, Shuya, who seemed to be confronting the man with the claws. He then saw two onlookers, a girl with black and blue hair, he had seen her before. Thought about talking to her but was always too busy. The other was Jason. A few passing words between them, but nothing much. He then let his eyes wander back to the man, the steel claws hanging on his back, the maddening grin that would chill someone to the bone, yet interested him greatly.

Deimos turned and raised an eyebrow, "I figured you'd show up eventually Will! But, really, he's my brother as well... you two are the only family I've got after all..." The sad look on Deimos' face was not seen often, but its appearance proved he was human, and could feel sad. "Matt was the first person to ever look at me as an actual human being, and not a psychopath... So him and I are really close y'know?"

Will shook his head. "I kind of figured you would be here starting trouble. Deimos was it? I would like you to please set my brother down." He growled. "Seriously, why bother my brother? He only knows of the horror stories everyone spits about you." He said, eyeing those who were watching the situation. The girl seemed to be creeped out by the man with the claws, the one standing up to him was foolish, probably would be knocked out in seconds, and the third, watching from a distance, kind of like he was, but he kept looking at the girl. "Matt, come on, we're going home. Now." He breathed.

Athena rocked back and forth, watching from a distance the scen that was being portrayed within the few of the boys. The guy... thing... People talked about him a lot. About all those disappearances and killings, she wouldn't doubt it for a second. The giy did look unstable, but who was she to judge. He seemed to be getting along fine with the two younger boys, but the older one, not so much it seems. The other older one seemed to have the worst look on his face and that he was ready to fight. Hopefully nothing comes to that. Athena would ahte to have to see that again.

When she looked down to change the song on her iPod, she noticed a shadow over by a tree, she looked out from the corner of her eye and saw a boy watching her. She saw him before, he was in some of her classes. She never really got the chance to talk to him, more less talk to anybody for that matter. She shrugged off the thought and changed the song to On the Brightside by Never Shout Never. She closed her eyes a bit and looked down, continuing to rock herself back and forth. The music loud enough to where she could hear it properly, but low enough to make sure nothing bad happens within the small group just a ways from where she was.

Matt looked at his brother with a frown and, grudgingly, jumped off of Deimos' shoulder. He looked up at Deimos and smiled. "See you tomorrow Deimos," he said. He looked at his brother now and sighed. "Do we have to go home? I wanna stay a little longer,"he said, his eyes beginning to shift towards the woods.

Jason withdrew himself when he noticed that the girl had noticed him, as did everyone else. He peeked around the tree and saw Matt look towards the woods when he finished talking. Jason frowned and finally decided to come out from hiding and walked over to the group. He first went to Shuya and whispered, "He's not worth it." He patted him on the shoulder before facing Deimos. He was a bit taller then Deimos, at least an inch or two, as he looked Deimos face-to-face. "Hey man, how about you just leave these guys alone, ok? I actually have to talk to them," he quietly said to Deimos in a soft tone.

Matthew looked up at this newcomer, wondering who this peson was. Whoever he was, he immediately didn't like him.

Will crouched down, looking into Matt's face. "Honestly Matt I don't like you speaking to that guy. He's nuts. Everyone knows that he murdered his parents." He said, looking over at Jason who was finally approaching. "I just promised mom and dad I would look after you, I don't want you getting hurt, ok?" He ruffled his brother's hair and stood, looking over at Deimos. "We'll stay for a bit, just keep away from that guy, ok Matt?" He breathed before looking over at Jason, figuring he had something to say to him.

Deimos smiled at Matt and nodded. He didn't show it, but he was upset at hearing all the accusations again. "You'll all regret this someday you know... I'll become the monster you make me out to be... and I'll torture each and everyone of you that calls me such. I know what you all fear most... hahahahaha... and I swear... You'll wish you never accused me of being a monster!" He turned to Matt, "You're the only friend I have... I trust you... more then anyone else." He backed away, and ran into the forest.

Shuya sighed as he picked up his phone, "I'm glad I have a warranty on this..." said Shuya, pulling a plastic bag out of his backpack and placing the remains of his phone in it. He looked to Matt with a genuine face of concern, "That guy seems a little unstable... but I guess we all are at some point in our lives..." and with that he zipped his backpack and walked away. "But how did he know..." thought Shuya on his walk back to his house.

It was a few moments after dismissal that the Chaz had walked from out of the school with a few other children following behind him. Chaz wasn't speaking to them though he was being bullied buy two boys. Chaz didin't care he didn't fear those boys he just kept walking towards the park.

The two boys then got the message that he wasn't afraid of them and just left him alone. Chaz walked over to the park dragging his bookbag by his it's strap. "Hey Matt...Hey Will." Chaz said as he approached three boys two of which he had known. "Matt want to come play at my house today...my parents aren't home it will just be me you and my babysitter there." Chaz asked hoping Matt would say yes. Chaz couldn't stand being alone with his babysitter she was like a pain in the neck when it came to rules, unless a guest was around.

Chaz looked at Will. "You can come too if you like." He said.

Matt watched as Deimos retreated into the woods, disappearing into the shadows. A small part of him wanted to follow his odd friend. However, he decided against it, figuring Deimos needed some alone time. He looked up at Will and protested, "Deimos is a good person. You and everyone else here are the mean ones." He started to continue with his argument until he heard his familiar friend behind him. Matt turned to Chazz with a smile. Chassis was the only friend, well normal one, that Matt had and liked. "Sure. That's if Will let's me," he said, his last words said in disgust.

Jason merely sat on the side waiting for the brothers to finish.

Will looked at Chaz before pulling Matt to him. "You know I'm just trying to protect you. I'm Deimos' friend as well but he is a bit... eccentric." He said, breathing into Matt's ear. "Anyway, go on. Have some fun." He said, lightly pushing Matt towards Chaz before standing and striding over to Jason, checking his watch and phone along his way. As he nodded at one of his only friends he spoke. "He seems to get more and more angry at me every day, he keeps pulling away. Almost like something is drawing him towards it." He breathed, eyeing the two younger children as they wandered off to play.

Matt gave a smirk at his brothers approving and turned back to Chaz. He smiled at Chaz and began to walk off with his friend to his house.

Jason watched Matt as he walked off with Chaz before turning his attention to Will. "Tell me about your brother. Like...has he always been so....mean," he asked, almost as if he were completely oblivious to the previous statement made by Will. Jason looked around to see if the two were alone only to notice the girl agan. However, she was wearing headphones so it was doubtful that she even noticed them there.

Athena gloomingly took her iPod out of her pocket and turned her music off, wrapping up her headphones and sticking it in the front zipper of her sidebag. She did have a few things to get done already for a few of her classes, and she honestly didn't want to fall behind already this year. She would soon be charged on for that. When she got up, she noticed that the group had now condenced down to two other boys. The other little ones trailing off into the forest. Why couldn't my house be the other way? She grumingly thought walking in the direction of the other two boys. I mean, she did do this routine often so it wasnt anything unusually new. Athena again thought, making her way to the side walk again.

Chances of them talking to her here low, in her mind. she never really was a people person, she mostly stayed to herself, so Athena was glad inside knowing that they might not give her a second thought. Which was good in both ways, she supposes.
