It should be both if you're in a family with both mother and father there, if both want to work then they should, but if only one want to work, then the other can stay home and be a house husband/wife.

We've gotten to the day and age now where single fathers and house husbands are becoming more common, because he would would rather stay home with the kids, or try to be a working father and look after hid kids on her own for whatever reason the mother isn't there.

So all-in-all both should lead the household hand-in-hand.

Personally i think that either party should be able to do what they want.

There is no rule on who the Head of the Household's gender should be
Although in most places, the male is generally the head of the household, the person who goes to work, works their ass off to earn the money to provide for their family (3+ People) Should be the person who is the head of the household...Its their money and without him/her the rest of the family would be
    (A) Homeless
    (B) Starving
    (C) Dead
(hey i hadda say it didnt i?)
and seeing as the main money earner is the person who keeps the rest of the family alive, he should be the head of the household
Well theres my 2 Cents worth, didnt mean to offend anyone if i did

Just like to chime in and say that due to inflation/the recession/increase in cost of goods, one minimum wage income is no longer enough to sustain even one person, let alone a family.

The economy has reshaped itself in the last 20 or so years due to (in my opinion) the feminist movement. Not claiming that it's a bad thing...this is simply one unwanted side effect. Since so many women are working, and hence many families are now two-income families, the cost of goods has increased faster than ever before. *insert joke about "back in my day" and buying ten things for a nickel*

I agree with Mike- in a two-income family, the head of the house isn't as simple as who earns the money.
To be honest, with all due respect Summoner, I don't believe authority and gender are related, especially in a supposedly equal relationship.

For lack of better wording, this comes down to variables, such as the personality of said people in the relationship. It really does depend in my opinion; I find it hard to think of a reason why men should lead women and vice versa.
