    So riku opened the door on Destiny Islands on the night of the storm? How did he open it and why didnt he do it earlier? I thought he always wanted to open it

    Most likely the same way Xehanort the Apprentice opened his world.

    Why didn't he do it earlier?
    Riku has been looking for a way to escape that small island and with the influence of Ansem. He apparently found a way.

    Just because you want to do something doesn't mean you know how to.
