The MockingJay

^ Funny, I was just about to make a thread about this.

I just got the book in the mail, but I haven't had the chance to start reading it yet. I'm so excited to see how the story ends, though. The Hunger Games was epic, and Catching Fire a worthy follow-up. So I'm sure Mockingjay will be just as good.

 

^ The Hunger Games is awesome, and easily the best of the three books. The story is captivating and there are some great characters.

I've recently finished Mockingjay, and decided to post my thoughts on it. SPOILERS BELOW.

Woah, this book is very intense. I could not put it down- I walked around all day with my nose stuck in it. For the most part, I liked it, though like is an odd word to use to describe the book, since it is very depressing.

Some things I liked- I liked that District 13 wasn't the wonderful place you'd expect it to be, as the center of the rebellion. It's just as restrictive as the Capitol, and just as interested in using Katniss. Another thing I liked was the focus on Finnick. I thought he was a cool character in Catching Fire, and I was glad to see more of him here. I also liked seeing that other side of Peeta, though I very much missed the old Peeta throughout the book. I'm also so glad that the book ended Katniss/Peeta. Anything else would have really disappointed me.

Some things that I didn't like so much- while I felt like the behavior of Katniss was realistic in comparision to how someone in the real world might behave after being subjected to the things she faced, I missed the ass-kicking, rebellious Katniss from the first and second books. I also disliked the way some of the deaths (notably Cinna, Portia, Finnick, and Prim) were essentially handled off-screen, and not enough time was spent on them to make me really sad that they had died. I'm a notable crybaby, but I never got teary-eyed once. And like I said, the book is very depressing. It's very much about the horror of war, and it never really lets up- there's not a whole lot of comic relief or light-heartedness here at all. I at least was hoping for a happier ending.

But, all things considered, I feel it was a worthy follow-up. It doesn't have the same spark as The Hunger Games, but I didn't expect it to.

It's weird to say this, but I sort of like Snow. Yeah, he's pretty much a monster, but he's honest for the most part, especially with Katniss, which is more than I can say for some other characters who are supposed to be on her side.

 

Book one is The Hunger Games, two is Catching Fire, and three is Mockingjay.

The story is set in a future North America (now called Panem) that has been destroyed by natural disasters and is now divided into 13 districts and run by a dictatorship called the Capitol. The Capitol, as a way to keep the districts in line, has instituted an annual event called the Hunger Games, in which each district must send a male and female child between the ages of 12 and 18 to fight to the death in an arena on live television. The story is from the point of view of a 16 year old (as of book 1) girl named Katniss.

It is well worth checking out. I could not recommend it more.
