OK, a recent post in another debate made me want to make this. This is something I've dealt with most of my life. It seems that society has set up a series of things that determine whether or not, as a guy, you are a "real man". If you don't fall into these things, you are not really a man at all. My problem is, most of them are just rude, immature, and kind of degrading in my opinion.

Most of it centers around your views and treatment of women. This "man code" for lack of anything else to say, basically sets down this degrading view of women and love that I just can't agree with.

To be a real man, you have to have sex. A lot. The women don't matter. They're just tools for your fun. If someone gets hurt when it's all said and done with, it's her fault for taking it so seriously. You're not to blame. And yet so many guys intentionally give off false impressions to get the girl to spread her legs. This is ok, cause everyone knows she really wanted to anyway.

Real men only care about the woman's looks. It doesn't matter what the personality is. You can't go with anyone who isn't model material. Women aren't really people, they're things. I have heard so many people talking about women as objects and not people. I had a friend saying that Justin Timberlake was an idiot to dump Jessica Simpson because she was so hot, further explaining that no matter what the personality is, when you wake up in the morning and are laying next to "that" you thank God for every minute you're alive. Dear God what an asinine view.

Real men also gawk and stare and talk obnoxiously every time they see a good looking woman. They point, and make it obvious, so that people can be sure that they're real men. It becomes a show off. Each of them talking about what they would do to "that". Again, speaking of the woman as an object not a person. In truth, I'm amazed that so many women put up with this, cause I know that they can see and hear this. I kept waiting for one of them to turn around and beat the hell out them all.

Oh and a last little thing to add to the list. If you are gay, you are not a real man. And somehow, if you are not a real man, by the above rules, you must be gay. It's twisted logic, but you'd be surprised how many people put stock in it. Even some women.

I've heard these things most of my life. I'm personally something of a romantic. I've never had sex, or even been on a date. I love the idea of having one girlfriend, one wife, one love. Only one woman. Something about that sounds so perfect. I'm not saying that this is a guarantee, but I have ignored all of my crushes and attractions my entire life, waiting for someone who I could actually see being with permanently. If I make a move, you can be sure that I see marriage and kids to be a distinct possibility.

I don't do casual dating. I don't have recreational sex. I don't view women as objects and tools for my own personal enjoyment. And while yes, I did see that hot woman in the store. Yes I did notice how good she looked. But you know what? I retained my dignity and hers by not making an ass out of myself and gawking at her like an animal in a zoo. She's a person for God's sake, show a little respect.

And yet, somehow, this makes me less of a man in the eyes of many. I actually have an aunt who has been telling people I'm gay because I've never had a girlfriend. My own aunt. How messed up is that? I am not gay. I'm not any less of a man. I just happen to have a romantic side, principles, and respect for women, something I think more men should have.

Anyway, what do y'all have to say? Who here has noticed these things as well? What are your opinions of them?

    Discuss.

welll. . . as a girl i dont have to follow the man code luckily.
Buuut, to be honest, i dont think any of that makes you a man, at all. . . makes u a jerk in my oppion. Also, i think that it is completely rediculious upon how if you dont follow them then you are labeled gay or homosexual. . . same thing. . . but meh.
I have also noticed this to be honest, and i do find it completely immature.
Also, for any guy that would just be with a women for sex, or anything sexually related, it may seem like it makes you a 'man' per say, but it doesnt make you a person. In my oppion makes you less of a man. Also, if men treat women as 'things' or possesions, i honestly dony understand why a women would want to be with him, except for sex.
Witch isnt even a relatonship, its more of . . . idk a word for it meh.
I also find this repulsive because if a few guys do follow this, it makes all guys look kinda bad. Like, if your chillin out with some mates n some guys are makeing really rude annoying comments, it gives you the impression all guys are like that, witch i dont like, because not all are.

Me, ima highly romantic person, and i have always been taught that you have sex when you love some1. So, like random sex with good looking people does confuse me a bit lols.
Buuut, then again i am young =]

I also do feel a bit of the same way as Ebeneezer, i just want like. . . one person, for love, n passion, n feelings, and emotions, not just sex, actually, im not planning on haveing it until i know that i am in love.
Im a highly romantic person, n the guys my age are in my oppion a bit repulsively immature and blatanly dont know how to control there hormones, tis highly annoying.
Buuut now ima just starting to ramble haha, soray = p

But yea basically, i just think those rules are a load of crap, and to be honest, if a guy can show his emotions and feelings and restrain from sexual activity, i think that shows that your a real man per say.

mmkay think i said all i needa say ^.^ hehe

I don't follow the man code. People call me gay...<------------- which I am not.... Just because most all of my friends are females, and that I play around with them. I don't consider myself a man whore but it is just who I am. People making rumors in school say that I am gay. WTF? I don't care. People come up to me and ask me if it is true. I don't give a rat ass. They can talk all this crap if they want to. If I let words get to me, I be one depress mothafu****. I do me and thats all I can do.. hehe..love this topic.

If A guy do is sex, he is a hoe. lol!

Luckily, from what I know, not all males follow this "law code"--although a lot do, most are just posers trying to fit in. The thing that really pisses me of however is when, like EbAl said, girls follow this code for choosing someone from the opposite sex--I mean, do they want to get treated like objects?

  5. Now in my opinion, women deserve a whole lot better(ladies probably heard this 100000Xs before).

But really if all a guy can think about is his dick(sorry), then WTF y'know.

At my school, I saw a dude with his girl just groping her every single frickin' day(I know TMI). That's not what makes a guy a guy.
Now at my age with all the..y'know..stuff happenin'.. and the.. ok. Sex is not what makes a guy a guy.
Just like Ebeneezer and Nearosaki, if I can restrain those damn weird urges.. then I can have more love with a girl more than ever(no sex..yet)

Same goes for babes. In my opinion.. all the chicks that go head-over-heels for machos are..well..bicthes(SORRY). *__*

The masses are sheep and Celebrities are the shepherds.
As long as there is a figure of success acting this way people feel they can become like them by doing what they do, thus the masses see manliness the same way, lets say Jason Statham would act in his latest movie (an example okay, was tired and couldn't think of anything better), girls want him and as an outcome guys want to be him and thus act as him.
I feel I am one of the few who feel otherwise, I don't care about manliness, I care about fairness in the world (yes an impossible task). If people call me gay I tell them to fuck off, if you want to segregate people then you are only adding to the problem.
I haven't found the one yet and and not worried as I have my whole life ahead of me, the peer pressure does not bother me, I am somewhat happy the way I am. I have a few problems emotional wise which cannot be sorted but I let them go and If it was a mistake then there is nothing I can do about it.

Straight to the point, Manliness is nothing. Uniqueness is Something.

Well, if you want my opinion, a big problem with this 'man code' is part of what women do.

They play it up to be a big deal if you hit them EVEN if they hit you first. They have equal rights. Act like it. Or back to the kitchen with you.

They think you have to be good looking or your just some nerd who sits in a basement and plays video games all day, when in fact its usually the 'nerds' who run track, become there bosses, and become famous when they grow up.

I'm not saying that males help the case. They definitely don't. And honestly, the guys I hang out with aren't like that. They treat everybody like crap, so it doesn't matter what they say anyway.

Basically. Guys do it. Girls do it. It's just like a double standard (and this came from the same post, that Al got the idea for this topic from). If you're friends hit girls and don't get laid, it's fine. If some random guy doesn't, he's not a man.

O.O you say 'they' as meaning all girls. . . and 'girls' talking bout all girls, not all girls do that o_O and not all guys do that. . . if one girl does it allot of people judge all girls upon that one girls actions visa versa for guys aswell.
oooh and another thing, not alll girls judge guys mainly upon looks, and not all girls think that if a guy isnt good looking or 'model material' is a 'nerd' who plays video games in his basement, and and tbh i have been gameing for 2 years now since i was 12, and i was honestly surprised on how many really good looking guys play MMOs, and yes that leads to a point.
It leads to the point of, that not all 'nerds' arent good looking.

Ok im kinda sick at the moment so i may not be thinking clearly so if i say anything out of teh ordinary, Just ignore it.

So as many of you have said before, a good number of my friends are of the opposite sex.
And People spread rumors about me hanging around with girls so much. Most of these rumors consist of being a girl, me being gay, or me just trying to be gay to hang with girls. None of these are true, I hang with alot of girls because the guys that go to my school don`t generally like my "fashion", music sense, the way i talk(the proper way of course)

If your going by the code than i am not considered manly. Who cares about being manly anyways. Most " manly men" are stuck-up egotistical ass holes who hardly anyone likes.

I hear you.. Same hear. Whatever tho. They can talk all they what. I think they are envious.

One added thing, how does hanging around with a group from the opposite sex make you gay. In all honestly I would love to hang around with the opposite sex more, Lol

Odd opinion isn't it. In some ways, you could argue for hanging out with same sex more to make you gay.

But as it turns out, since society has dictated that men and women have different interests, that means if you hang out with the opposite sex, you must be more like that sex, and ultimately, that makes you gay. Again, it's twisted logic.

lols i was wondering that myself O.O wouldnt hanging around with the same sex make you seem gay O.- not of the opposite sex ?

buuut i kinda do understand that, cuz my one mate he only chills with girls cuz the guys think hes gay. . .witch he isnt wat so ever, and because he has no frnds that are guys they all think hes gay . . . so i do understand where hes coming from with that point ^.^

Ok, (not trying to brag here but) a lot of my friends are REALLY popular, I mean like 1000+ friends in facebook is "ehh.." to them, lol. So, you can trust me when I say not all popular kids are really all that bad in the inside. When I have personal talks with some of them about girls who they really like, they don't ever mention sex, etc.--some of them even say they wouldn't make out with their girl unless she wanted to make out. Plus, they can be pretty sensitive and deep and all. If I asked any of them if they would honestly choose looks or personality in a wife, they would all choose personality (with looks as an additional bonus for most)

But I’ll admit to a couple sad points. In choosing just any girlfriend, my friends might choose looks over personality, only because they know girls these days can be a bunch of sluts and that a temporary relationship is the best way to satisfy those urges they get, kind of like the ones that Seph X always gets, lol.

The second one: in order to show their popularness when around girls, my friends will have a complete change of personality, take note of a few things they saw from an MTV show or heard from 50 cent on how to be a man, and act like a bunch of monkeys.

Like Pulse said, the media and celebrities are the main reason for this (even for girls, just look at Cosmogirl, etc.); they're able to define what popular is 'cause they really have that much of an impact on teens these days. It's just too bad they don't take positive advantage of their influence.

again, i would like to repeat, not all teen girls do that. . .take me for example. . i dont read any of those magazines thingys i find them a waste of time and energy tbh, and i really dont like how allot of people will judge all people just because of the way one or two act, allsoo not alll girls now a days are sluts O.-
    just a very large handful

There have always been guys that think this way. There have always been girls that think this way too. Look up some Operas and you will see what I mean.

A part of it is that for centuries (more?) men held and mantained a higher status than women. At least in Western society.

    Let's Look at some dates:

1968- Women getting more rights in work force; very fascinating year to be honest. Many assasinations, riots, and elections.

1958- Women are house wives mostly. Umm...Feminine Mystique tells it better than me.

1948- Women are encouraged to quit there wartime jobs in order to have room for returning soldiers.

1938- In the Great Depression, married women would get fired. So often a couple wouldn't live together.

1928- Women can vote, go without a chaperone, wear shorter skirts.

1918- Women's role in WWI home front helps the Suffrage Movement.

1908- The Edwardian era when corsets got very dangerous.

1808- The Napoleanic Code undos all the gains of the French Revolution about gender.

1708- Queen Sophia Doreatha of Saxe-Meningen is banished for having an affair, while the dalliances of her husband go unnoticed.

1608- Due to Queen Anne of Denmarks' influence, women can be in theatre.

1508- Women are virtually the property of their husband, brother, or son. In a year, Henry VIII will become King. He had beheaded two queens not giving him a son.

We made a tremendous amount of progress in a short amount of time! 500 years is a drop in the bucket of history. There will always be Falstaffs and Lulus, and I fear there is nothing we can do about it.

I think it's a little naive to think that if you don't follow this 'man code' then you're labelled some kind of male deviant, or a 'homosexual.' But at the same time, you won't be winning any popularity contests if you don't fit that stereotype...because generally those that are popular do, and you don't get popular by being different.
