District 9

    Plot -
Let's start of like this. You really do just get plugged right into the movie. There's no time wasted with crappy dialogue or unneeded drama. Right away you start with the cold hard facts of what is going on in the world. Now, for some it may be a bit of a shock because you don't really see yourself getting into so quickly but it's a good change. You also meet your first character, Wikus van de Merwe. He holds a modest job at MNU (Multinational United) as a field agent. At the start of the film he is doing an interview explaining his job and such. We then jump to MNU's new "plan" for controlled peace in the alien population. And basically from there a series of incidents force an unlikely hero to rise above everyone else.

Acting - The cast was simply stunning. Unheard of, but amazing. You really could get a feel for what was happening in the movie. The pure human emotion was quite amazing.

Visual Effects - Let me just tell you something. This movie was all about the effects. Really how can you have a giant spaceship hovering over Johannesburg, South Africa and have it look fake? Now, I won't compare this movie to those of a certain movie containing a certain *cough* Avatar *cough* but I do say that it is quite up there. The aliens looks amazing but at some points, mostly the beginning, you can't help to think that it looks a bit fake. But I would take that as a sort-of "getting used to it" phase because it got alot smoother after a while.

Audio - Ah! The music. Pure ecstasy. Never have a heard such dark, entrancing, African derived music. It simply amazing how he (Clinton Shorter) was able to do it. Nothing was really off track with the audio. And the sound effects were great. There were times where I had trouble picking something up, mostly in those gritty in your face scenes, but I simply just put on the subtitles.

Pretty obvious that this movie is a must see in my book.

    Anyone else seen it?

  2. Haresuno

    Haresuno KH-3's Übermensch

I've seen it. The only thing that really ripped the movie out of the listings for me was the overall theme which has been done to death. If I want a good movie with a theme similar to District 9, I'll go watch the new The Day the Earth Stood Still.

What what? Yet another alien apocalypse movie? Apocalypse movies are rather popular nowadays.

  4. Avalantos

    Avalantos Mr. Detective

You obviously didn't understand the movie.
P.S - The new The day the Earth stood still was a flop, you should watch the original.

Not an alien apocolypse, far from it. Its a play on District6 and the racism of it. Basically Aliens come to earth and are put into camps, the stroy stems from that.
Very genious movie, one of the best I have ever seen, probably the must see of 2009 in my opinion.

    Thanks for the review.

  5. Haresuno

    Haresuno KH-3's Übermensch

I understood it just fine. Humans are conceited bastards that won't accept anything different they don't know or understand.

Hence the suppressing of the aliens.

They took advantage of the aliens, took their technology, and preached righteousness. That was the overall jist of it and I was disappointed.

  6. Avalantos

    Avalantos Mr. Detective

It was more of a history lesson than both of those, which added humor to the concept, the taking of technology was also a play on district 6. The main storyline however was to keep you enticed. Really it was a very well done movie, can't understand how you compare it to TDTESS

  7. Haresuno

    Haresuno KH-3's Übermensch

    Both had aliens.
Both had alien technology as a motivation for humans to take.
Both had the main theme of humans not taking the time to talk with the aliens. It was always about what they wanted.
One had an alien die leaving a cliff hanger for what happened to the world, the other had a cliff hanger about what would happen when the aliens come back.

The list can go on a bit more.

  8. Avalantos

    Avalantos Mr. Detective

AH, I understand. Your simple minded.
You seemed to ignore the references to history, and from what I remember TDTESS was not about taking technology, it was more about trying to save the planet. One group took an agressive root and the other tried to talk.

  9. Haresuno

    Haresuno KH-3's Übermensch

Haven't had a history class in a while now. Not simple minded, just not informed. It was about saving the planet, from one perspective. From the other it was about getting rid of the alien, taking it's technology to "save" the humans from an enslavement that wasn't going to happen.

EDIT: However within the humans there was the group that did try to save the planet and humans by talking with the alien. That group I applaud.

Doubleedit: Do you mean the history lesson as in slavery?

If your on about humans trying to save the planet in District 9, no, the planet was never in danger.

Also, not in slavery, the whole movie was based on the south african district 6. Read up on it and you will enjoy the movie so much more and realise how clever it is.

... I take it you didn't bother watching TDTESS because that was the conflict in the movie...

I take it you never read my post, explaining how the movies hold no similarities bar the aliens and that that similarity was questionable as the Aliens were a reference to the Blacks in District 6.

Touche, Avalantos. Touche. <_< Alright so I miss read the previous post, but the themes were still the same (more or less they held some common theme) and that was the turn off for me.

Rofl, loving the love guys. xD

  15. Blade

Blade Heroes Have One or Two

the movie was great. good story, good effects, and weapons that pwned all (the suit thing was the best). and, honestly, it was better than TDTESS

Rofl, That Day The Earth Stood Still was like... okay... But the way they changed it so much was just kind of bad. Though the current themes were nice. :/
