At first I would like to point out, the main question of the whole thread is supposed to be as you should answer to it, are you personally downloading files illegally, music, games, movies... etc.? But this thread can be used to conversate about the subject in many forms.

Personally, I have been downloading for many years, mostly music since I wasn't really urgent about the movies and I didn't know how to install the downloaded games, but when I got used to the installing, I just downloaded more and more...

...until I didn't know what to download anymore.

So, I'm an usual downloader, and I have almost always something in the dowload section.

But what I think about downloading, oh well, it's very bad habit and all, artists and people who have the copyrights for the movies and musics suffer and they'll get no money for it, but I have been told many times that it's a good advertising for the product. And it really has been, that when I have downloaded some albums or games, I have bought them after that (oh well, some of them). In example, I downloaded Oblivion but few weeks after that I bought it along with Bioshock.

So, what do you guys think?

no, everyone has a choice. I for one chose to do it and don't care. As soon as everything becomes avaliable in all countrys at the same time and for the same price I may stop.

    GrandShadow I accept your challange.

while i myself have never downloaded something illegally, i have a friend that does. and i'm not ashamed to say i will ask him to download stuff for me or i'll copy things he's downlaoded.

i know its wrong but if people aren't gonna crack down on it then why raise protests against it? its like telling a child you can't have a toy but then giving them the money so they can buy it themselves. if you're gonna say no then you better be prepared to enforce it or you may as well shut up and join them.

I don't really find too much to download besides underground music and certain DVDs/video clips which I'm unable to purchase in my region.

I don't particularly think it's 'bad' to do it to avoid payment, I just don't see the logic in it. Like honestly, if I think something is really good, I'd like to support to source in hopes that they produce more stuff I like.

I don't think it's fair that I have to pay for an entire CD when I only like one song however. So many artists make one good song and like 12 deliberate pieces of crap. If I like every song (or at least half) on a CD, I go out and buy it.

Limewire and all that sucks. Use torrents.

I do download music illegally but it's for a very good reason. There are no restrictions on the music file. No DRM on the file and it allows you to be more free with the music you get, for example, I use it on Windows Movie Maker to make family videos. I like to get the music instantly too. It's a pain ripping music from a cd.

Certainly a good point there. I recommend using torrents too, if you wish to download anything. (NOT recommending to download, but if you have used the download programs, use torrents. But if you haven't downloaded, don't. It's a bad habit.)

Actually that's one of the reasons why I sometimes download something that I already have as my property, but I'm too lazy to rip it to the computer. It's a pain indeed.

And one of the reasons is also that I don't have almost never the opportunity to get decent amounts of money for once in a while, so I have to count on that I can download something.

    You should define illegal.

About a week ago, I downloaded a Fire Emblem game onto my PSP. But I already own that game. So in that sense, it's not illegal.

But the way I see it, it depends on how old something is. If you download a game that is 10 or 20 years old, then I don't see anything wrong. I doubt if you buy the game that any of those profits actually go to the game company that made the game. Especially if that company doesn't exsist anymore.

    Agreed
    Finding loop holes, best way to get away with things (;

I, myself do download illegal music, though sometimes i do go buy the CDS(depends on the artist or band), i basically hate itunes, so im not paying them, :), plus this way is free, My iphone itself is sorta illegal actually (its unlocked, basically a few steps from being illegal, as ATT is trying to make it that way) and has 2345 illegal items on it haha :p

If you share then you are out of the clear. I mean, ok, let's say, I went out an buy an album. I upload the songs on Limewire or something, megaload or rapidshare, and I am sharing. Last time I check, sharing stuff was nice.

Also, you should stay off applications like KAZAA or Napster. I mean, when I watch the news, those are the software that get your ass caught.

And nobody likes leechers. . . . I've downloaded. . . once or twice. And, like DW said before, if the game company doesn't exist and the profits don't go to it (Total Annihilation is a PERFECT example - Atari bought them out.), then I see no reason in paying a bunch of corporate moneygrubbers.

This was the debate my English class had last week. I made a presentation and did loads of research to prove my point. As you said the main question is whether or not we download illegally. Yes I do. I download song and tear chunks out of them to make personalized ring tones for people. With the information I have found, when you buy a CD from a store only a tiny amount goes to the artist. Some say that it will eventually add up and be a large lump some, but they use it on themselves. Say you buy a CD for $20, only 2 cents will be obtained buy the artist. The rest goes to their label company. So if you really looked at it your really just paying some guy to have a huge house and a personal just. This is my opinion but I really would like to have my own plane rather than some stranger using your money for his own use. Plus if you had to pay for every song you own, ten to one you wouldn't own very many. With little song buying the artist wouldn't be all that popular and their music wouldn't spread the way it does now. So my opinion is that downloading is perfectly fine and shouldn't be illegal.
