i'll look up the book, but still if you think what your doing is good but your hurting people, is it good no, best example, Hitler. read his auto.

Okay now you tread different waters.

Say if you knew a global disaster was about to happen, but you could stop it. All that you would have to do was press a button that activate three bombs. These three bombs would explode instantly, killing thousands if not millions of people.

You have no other choice except the two in front of you: press the button or don't.

If you press the button people will die. They will know you did it, and they will never know that you saved them.

On the other hand if you don't press it, everyone dies.

I would be that necessary evil.

good debater i see, but if this bomb will kill millons will the disater kill that many?

Given the knowledge before you -e.g. me saying everyone dies- yes the disaster would kill that many and more.

ok then...dont got a comeback there, but if you tell everybody before hand, and make the bombs go of, then you will be loved and hated, for killing many and for saving some.

Sorry but you get no chance to explain yourself.

Say it was a nuclear crisis. You activate the bombs. Those who had nuclear arms now hold off to fight you. You who goes into hiding so no one can find you.

If you're seen there is no "Just let me explain why I had to kill millions of people".

You either play the necessary evil and keep the nuclear war off or explain yourself, and let the people go back to killing everyone on the planet.

then i would have to do the bombs, no matter what, i would be saving the world, even if it wasnt in the way i would like too.

Then you sir have just agreed that evil is a necessary. But only because you justified it as so. You would be the only person to know that you "saved the planet" but it's okay because by becoming that evil you have done a great good.

ok, good one, but really i wasn't evil, i did something that know one could i hated it, i was made, so it was not all that evil, really....good in my sense so i dont go crazy, like wacthmen, that movie, that is a good example, that is what it is.

Sometimes you got to be evil to get the things you want...

Nice people get stepped on being nice to the evil

evil people don't care and go for whatever they want no matter what....

That's where I got the scenario from.

But just because you view it as good doesn't mean it is. Good now a days is what the populous make it out to be.

You weren't made to push that button, you chose to. To you, you are not evil because you did it in order to save others, but in the process you are now deemed evil by society. You didn't have to press the button. No one would blame you. I know a few people who would not have pressed the button so that life could start over after a nuclear holocaust.

by why do that, what about the after waste?

Well a lot of people view the human race as destructive. We are the only creature on this planet that if we became extinct, the planet would not be harmed.

Good and evil are just words to describe what we do. There is no solid definition for either just opinions.

Everyone's touched on a famous idea known as the scale of relative righteousness. I'm a fan of this model personally...I think it makes a lot of sense.
    Code:
      Evil Neutral Good
      |-|-|-|-|-|-|-|
    -10 0 +10

The further 'left' you go, the more 'Evil' and the further 'right' you go, the more 'Good' and 0 of course, being "Neutrality."

Human beings for whatever reason, like to classify things...so we 'classify' people on this scale. We might take people like Hitler, Stalin, and throw them around -9, -10...and people like say Mother Theresa, we put as a +9, +10.

But on a day to day basis, we may vary significantly on this scale...and as with any mathematical scale with no absolutes (like the ferenheit scale as opposed to the kelvan scale), it can vary significantly depending on who is looking at it.

    One day I may be (in a given person's opinion) a +3, and other days a -4.

    ---------------

Now...it is my opinion that if you 'add up' our points on these scales every day, over every single person's measurement (this is crucial), and we will come out Neutral.

It must be every single person's measurement...because a given person may foolishly think they are a saint every single day of their life while doing terrible things, and another may think too poorly of themselves...ie. One person may think Hitler was the worst scum to walk the planet every single day of his life. Others however, may be of the opinion that Hitler did a lot of good (particularly Hitler himself). So what does it mean exactly?

I'm saying I'm of the opinion that neither good nor evil actually exists in human beings...there are no absolutes...only opinions.

(Of course if you bring a higher power into the mix things change significantly...but we don't know a priori that a higher power is being discussed here)

For that bit of you guys talking about Chaos: Chaos - Wikipedia

Is Malcom X order really that good? Malcom X advocated violence to get his point across. Very much unlike Martin Luther King Jr., who advocated peace at all times.

Reminds me of something I thought of after reading the Watchmen graphic novel.

I'd like to point out there's a difference between chaos and chaos theory (the article Desert Warrior posted mentions 'mathematical chaos').

Chaos has many different faces...be it entropy, disorder in the universe...if I drop a deck of cards, it will scatter, become chaotic, and hence increases its entropy...or be it a lack of order, or a lack of predictability. On the surface, it seems like the same thing, but it's actually the other side of the coin.

Chaos theory predicts that essentially nothing is predictable in the long run. There is no 'unified field theory' that Einstein believed in, linking microscopic behaviour, or Quantum Mechanics (atoms and electrons, which are completely unreliable and unpredictable) with large body motion, or Newtonian Dynamics (everything from small objects like cells, to the gigantic, like planets which behave in what seems to be a predictable manner).

Very different from the concept of chaos itself...it states a lot more than just the idea of chaos itself.
