Legalizing Marijuana?

At first glance you might think that this would be totally wrong and shouldn't even be debated about. However, I think differently. Marijuana is the most used illegal drug used in America, and even has instances where it is, somewhat, legal.

Mostly I'm thinking about California and how curtain amounts of marijuana are forgotten about. I know this because I know someone who didn't go to jail for possessing marijuana (In case your wondering, that isn't the point).

Now our national dept is well over one trillion dollars, and I don't see it going to zero anytime soon. However, making weed legal and taxing it considerably, would really help our economy in the long run.

Now in terms to safety, and the terms to using it. pretty much the same laws as alcohol: can't use it unless your 21, and can't drive under the influence of it. Also since it's smoked the same laws to cigarettes would apply as well: You can't smoke it in public places, and you can't smoke it inside any building (except your house of course).

This drug really isn't as dangerous as tobacco or alcohol, and won't really ruin your life as much as the really dangerous drugs.

Now if the mods finds this a little too offencive then you may lock this thread.

Lastly, just so you don't get the wrong ideal, I don't smoke marijuana. Never have, and probably never will, but this is for those who would.

Just to get this out of the way before getting to my point, I too have not smoked marijuana.

One big reason why marijuana has not been legalized yet is because it is too hard to reguate, since it is natural. Regulating and taxing marijuana is rather difficult.

And it is not even as close to being as deadly as tobacco. Cigarettes contain nicotene, which is highly addictive, and tons of chemicals, including arsenik (rat poison). Marijuana is all natural, and you cannot get addicted to it.

In some places you can get it for easing of pain in some areas, in example if you got an bad back and it constantly makes you feel it's about to break, you can get it "legally to use" if it's used for the medical purposes. I read a story about one finnish man who didn't want to stop using because it helped his bad back and there was some other reasons as well, but they weren't in the negative side.

Me and couple of my friends discussed about this few days ago (since we all smoke weed, but not like it would be an usual thing to do) if marijuana would be legalized, but one bad side-effect would be that it would jump over some medicines, just like those what eases pain. Of course those who wouldn't smoke even if it would be legalized and said that it's not dangerous, I think that the older people wouild still prefer the pills better. But within the young, let's say about 18-26, we thought that it would be popular in those ages.

But it cannot really be said before it would be legalized. All kind of things would happen.

lol, this is related to drugs thread XD
but oh well.... yay more debates

there is some negative effects, if you keep on taking it it will mess up you mind, but if its use in medicine its somewhat ok
i've seen many who have gone through this because one of my family did and rebeled against me parents

Actually, in own way, these two threads are not the same The other is about drug addiction, this is about legalizing one drug.

It's good to have this thread anyway, 'cause when we're talking about the legalizing in the drug addiction topic, we're off-topic from the real point, and I don't knoe if it is, but usually it's against the forums rules.

Legalizing marijuana has it's pros and cons.

Pro: It can be taxed. And because there are so many people who do it, it would be profitable.

Con: Ethics. It is unethical to legalize it because legalizing it is indirectly supporting it.

An example of the con is some tax thing done here in California either a few months ago or a year ago. There was some prop about taxing Indian casinos. Yes, taxing those casinos would help, but by doing that it is somewhat encouraging people to go and gamble. And when people gamble too much, it becomes something bad.

And yes, I'm aware the con for legalizing marijuana is debateable.

hm.... what your saying is true,
and you have good points to to which it was going to relate to what i was going against.
legalizing it would be not good for the community, its good for taxing but the community would be messed up. its better to choose a different way then risking the live of the people education and whatnot

Pot would be California's cash crop.
We'd be out of debt within at least 5 years.

well, for my state at least.
    most likely less.

    It'd also clear out prisons.
