Multi Platform Releases

Does anyone else find this trend of SE is really beginning to annoy them? You release a game on PS2. Everyone who has a PS2 and is interested buys it and plays it. Then you release a sequel on GBA. Or PSP. Or DS. All of a sudden you have just alienated every person who played and loved the first game but can't afford to buy the other platform you've released the sequel on. If you want to release games for multiple platforms, be my guest, but why release a string of direct sequels like this? Why can't every incarnation of KH be on PS2. Or every incarnation of FFXII. Most companies release games on multiple platforms. That's great. But all I'm saying is that if you release a game on any platform, all of it's direct sequels should remain either on that same platform or the next generation of that platform.

It is a great way to generate revenue. There are some people who only play Nintendo as well. They may just play Kingdom Hearts while waiting for the next Zelda game. Or get it as a Christmas gift.

In any case this isn't about the fans. It's simply good business.

There are also the psycho fans who will buy a system just for the game. Then those other games for that system come along and you have a new buyer. I admit, I am one of them. I pretty much bought my PSP for Final Fantasy. Of course, FFT is now in my PSP right now and I am anxiously awaiting FFVII: Crisis Core. Of course there's a Star Ocean coming out on the PSP I think and another RPG...I can't remember the name of it though.

I can understand that though. I'm really irritated with Final Fantasy myself. I have played every single Final Fantasy, I own most of them, beaten a few...except FFIII. The infamous FF never released to North American shores. Then it comes out...on the DS. F***! I was so pissed. The ONLY FF I have not played and its on that damn DS. Damn you Nintendo. Damn you to hell. I always have loved Nintendo since I was a kid but...I still damn them for that.

I agree that for a fan on a limited budget, the multi platform releases bite. But if I were S-E, I'd be patting myself on the back and releasing a few more games. There's always that fanboy who'll go out and buy a new console just to see Sephiroth's sword one more time.

But would they not be making more money by releasing each game on multiple consoles rather than the series on multiple consoles but each game on only one console. This way, they get the sales from all console users, but they don't lose the fans who simply aren't capable of purchasing them all.

@EbAl: Releasing every single game on multiple consoles would take a lot of work. It takes forever to get a game from S-E now, when it's only on one console. The poor loser who had the last console they decided to port the game to would be waiting for ages. And the developers who should be working on the next installment would be tied up making the same damn game 20 different times.
