The 59th quadrennial elections is upon us.

Which candidates have caught your eye?

I haven't been following the election as well as I should be, so I don't know that I necessarily have a specific candidate in mind. I just really hope Trump loses. Regardless of political party or opinions on impeachment, he's an embarrassment to this country, in my opinion, and the idea of four more years of his antics makes me cringe. But I feel like it's still kind of early to make guesses on what will happen.

I personally have been following Andrew Yang. The media hasn't been really covering him like the other candidates so he's out there getting attention for himself. I've seen him crowd surfing, he's been on SnapChat answering questions from young people and has had various serious and hilarious interviews where he still manages to get his point across.

Most of his attention is from being known as an Asian man who's going to give every American a $1000 dollars (Freedom Dividend) funded from these corporation not paying taxes which I'm completely for. Instead of MAGA (Make America Great Again), his slogan is MATH (Make America Think Harder)

His platform has a more socialist stance which I highly favor him over the other candidates. Some of his policies are:

    • Freedom Dividend
    • Medicare for All
    • Equality (Minorities / LGBTQ)
    • Reduce Mass Incarceration
    • Controlled Cost of Higher Education
    • Paid Family Leave
    • Combat Climate Change

I just feel sort of defeated, I guess. Like, does it even matter who the president is, short of them being someone utterly unfit for the job? Everyone knows nothing will get done, just like nothing ever gets done these days with this absolutely worthless congress. Lots of people have great ideas, but are we really going to see any of it come to be? It's sad that the US is so behind the times on issues like health care and higher education. But every time someone proposes a change, the word socialism gets thrown around and idiots freak out. And I think a lot of people, especially around where I live, are pretty ignorant about politics in general. Around here, I feel like a lot of them just vote based on what their religion dictates, rather than thinking critically on what would actually benefit them.

Thanks for sharing about Andrew Yang. I've seen a little about him, but really haven't been following the democratic candidates that closely because for a while there were so many of them. I'll have to look into him.

I know for sure. There won't be change if there's no one in office willing to make it. But I hear what you're saying, if I were president and thankfully I'm not. My first few days in office would be packed with quite the number of executive orders.

Yeah, there's like 8 now. Most of their policies are the same. Yang's policies just stand out above the rest.

And people whine when presidents do that, too.

We need to get money out of politics. Our politicians should be working in our best interests, not the best interests of companies and lobbyists, and they definitely shouldn't be lining their own pockets. We need term limits for congress, but our politicians these days have such little integrity that they'd never vote on something that didn't benefit themselves.

    Ugh.

Yeah, the field's shrunk a little over the past few months. I just hope whoever eventually wins the primaries is able to rally the base and appeal to independents/people dissatisfied with Trump's presidency so far. I'm not feeling Biden at all. He was fine as a VP, I guess, but he's been in politics so long that I'm sure he's got some skeletons (plus he seems somehow wrapped up in this Ukraine shit, not great optics), and he kind of gives off a creepy uncle vibe around women. Warren seems sort of hypocritical; I think she talks but doesn't quite follow through. And I was really all for Bernie last election cycle, but he's so old and has already had health issues. Plus he gives the opposition the opportunity to scare people with the "socialism" boogeyman. Maybe someone like Yang, who's more of an outsider, would be a good choice.
