Prologue
A man is destined to do many things; to love, to care , to learn from their mistakes. Also with determination, he is destined to fulfil his goals but when the balance fails to resume, they are punished. Many disappearances have occurred throughout the year of 2011 and a girl at the age of 10 looked out of her window on Christmas Eve of that year, seeing a man in a suit appearing from the fog within and then he disappearing like a ghost. That girl is called Marie and she was from the town of Heihart in British Columbia, Canada. The town of Heihart is not known to people around Canada and even within the British Columbian interior, being 5 hours away from any major city. It had a population of 300 people and as like any small town, everyone knew everyone. Marie’s father was a farmer like many others in the town, who fed their families. They sold wheat, pork and also fresh Canadian beef but they only sold their produce in markets across British Columbia and in the town ofcourse. Heihart was a peaceful town but what really made it unique was it’s strange weather patterns. At 4PM every night, no matter what the season is, a heavy fog rolls on the streets from the mountains. No one can barely see within the fog because of how thick it was, all except one; Miss Marie Bakeley, who every night saw a black suited man at precisely 11:14 PM, ever since that fateful Christmas Eve night but now it was 2015 and the little girl was now 14 years old and on Christmas Eve 2015, she finally decided to delve into the deep fog of the night for the first time.

Chapter 1: Bakeley Beginnings

Miss Marie, a blue bright eyed girl with chocolate brown hair lowering down to her shoulders sank into her covers like a caterpillar entering inside its cocoon. The girl was intently waited for the sound of distant footsteps as she looked at her bird shaped clock. It was now 11:10 PM. Bakeley, who was staring at the point of 11:14PM at her clock, was debating whether or not it was a bad idea to follow the stranger. Ever since 2011, people have disappeared in the fog and have never been seen again. A 7 year old boy disappeared last year and her parents are bitterly worried about him. Many people believe he was looking for his pup, Conrad, who also disappeared into the abyss of fog. Her doubts about her plans were reinforced by the sound of wind moaning in the background. It was also raining, which was also often in the town of Heihart and the pitter-patter of it dancing on the rooftops and the ground relaxed the 14-year-old. Suddenly she heard a trickle of a puddle from outside, which forced the Young Canadian to turn away from the clock and facing the window. Her vision was blocked as well because of the cold, Scotland like night. The minutes were passing slowly, as she decided in her mind that this time she would be following him. The reason for this strange behavior was because firstly, small towns like Heihart were not very interesting and nothing has happened. The cinemas in the area were still playing Casablanca and James and the Giant Peach…Secondly, she felt entranced by this man in a suit. Not many people wore suits in the area or barely owned one. Also this man was walking through the fog, willy-nilly, without any fear. She wanted to know why he was so brave and this entranced her like a woman in World War Two clinging on to a fresh 18-year-old soldier who came back from the war. She then realized, as she looked at herself, that she was still in her pink and yellow flowered pajamas and in bed! Trying to ignore the fact that she was still in her pajamas, she quickly paced outside, making sure she wasn’t waking up her family upstairs. She cautiously opened the creaky, almost rickety door and stepped into the rain, feeling the downpour start to drench her clothes. She walked up the pathway, smelling the faint smell of fresh smoke coming from a fireplace and then she immediately heard humming coming from the alleyway. It was the man in the suit. He started to whistle and dance like the scene from Singin in the Rain. He looked jolly and he was always like this on rainy days. Marie giggled but as she did so, the man turned to face her, a few feet away. He walked towards her and lowered his top hat to reveal a blue spiky haired boy, who looked as though he was in his teenage years. He looked almost the same age as Marie.
“Good evening, Miss. What is your name?”
“Marie, Miss Marie Bakeley.” She said with a whisper.
The boy stepped back in awe and instantly bowed.

“Why are you bowing to me?” Marie asked, confused.
The boy stood up to his feet and took her hand, kissing it afterwards.

“You must come with me. You are very important and…you are also a beauty.”
Marie blushed and looked away. She felt embarrassed but also very touched, even though she only just met him.
“Well…uh…thankyou….”
The boy started to walk with her but then stopped at a puddle. He smiled and waved his right, causing the water to rise up to his hand. The water wrapped itself into a sphere. Marie stepped back, in shock, wincing her eyes.

“What the hell are you doing? Am I dreaming?” she asked.
“No you are not dreaming. I am being of the water tribesmen called the Athanians and you, my lady will soon be able to operate this. Now you must come with me. Take my hand.” Marie took his almost ice white hands and the fog started to whirl around them and a gust of wind caused Marie to close her eyes. She could hear the cry of a whale and as she opened her eyes, she also heard the sounds of waves crashing against rocks. They were somewhere else and Marie figured out that they were at a beach town. What confused her though was the fact that she heard a whale as the fog moved around them. She noticed she was correct about being at a beach town though, as the fog cleared from her sight and she could see the black reflection of the ocean because of the night sky. They were on a wooden pier. She was flabber ghasted but also very scared. She started to back away from the boy whose hair was now rippling as though they were waves themselves because of the harsh winds and as she stepped back, she noticed that he had purple eyes, which did not look fake; they looked pure with energy. His eyes then caught hers, which made her jump and accidentally step onto a plank which creaked. Suddenly, the plank cracked and Marie was about to fall through but the boy caught her hand. She smiled, now knowing she could trust him.
“Thankyou.” He let go of her hand, as she dusted herself off. “Where are we?”
“We are at White Rock, a spiritual town for my kind. This town is circulated around the rock my elders brought over hundreds of thousands of years ago. Tourists come here often.”
Marie asked him another question. “What are you? What is your name?”
“I am an ancestor of the ancient elders. My name is Bayne.”
Marie nodded, as she usually did when she found out other peoples’ names. Bayne stared at her and shook his head.
“We need to get moving; my father would want to speak to you, perhaps even the chief.” Marie and Bayne walked across the streets of White Rock, which were lit by Christmas lights and the normal lamps on each corner. Marie thought it was a very beautiful town and she had never seen the ocean before. It was remarkable to her and she loved the fact that she was walking at night without the fog like Heihartians had to deal with every night.
“So tell me about yourself, Marie”, Bayne asked her, interrupting her train of thought. Marie sighed. The 14-year-old had nothing to say. She found nothing interesting about herself and also she had never left Heihart before. Her parents indeed possessed a car but they never found it useful to go to Vancouver. Her family was broke all the time and Vancouver was 4 hours away. Her life was rather dull to her but then she realized that now her life was going to change drastically.
“I don’t really know. I’m 14. I live with my mother and my brother, Asher, who is 16. He’s quite obnoxious at times.” Marie gave a little cough, clearing her throat. “I’m kinda shy and I am an A student.” Marie knew she was mumbling randomly but Bayne looked very interested. He flicked his hair off his eyes and smiled.
“That seems pretty normal but I can see that your life is boring.”
“How do you know?”
“Your tone of voice, your hands, your normal eyes” he answered.

They stopped by a small clock tower and Bayne started to frantically look for something and he smelled the air like a dog. His head was twitching.
“Something’s wrong” he told her with a worried, small voice, completely the opposite to how he was ten minutes before. A blue feathered bird with purple eyes landed on his right shoulder.
“We were supposed to meet the elders here” Bayne told her. Suddenly the bird on its shoulder gagged water from its mouth. It then stretched up to reveal four people but their faces or clothes were not distinguished with their features. The four beings, two on either side started to attack each other. The first attack was made by the people from the right away from the clock tower. A ball of flame shot out of their hands and it sent the other two back and over the high cliff. The fireball was shown by the water but the flares coming from within it made it noticeable. Suddenly Bayne ran to the right, leaving Marie behind and the water fell back into a puddle.
“WAIT!”
“STAY THERE!” he shouted with ferocity in his voice.
The bird flew onto Marie’s shoulder and as it opened its beak, a sound of boiling water came out of it and as Marie took a deep breath, she could smell smoke coming from nearby. Marie could tell something was happening; there was a fight.
