It's been all over the news in recent months/this past year or so ad nauseam. Do you think police officers are abusing their power? Why or why not? Feel free to bring up specific cases to discuss, or however you may want to go about it.

    ---
I feel like there are always going to be people who take advantage of their power when given the opportunity, or are just too stupid or too mean to be effective law enforcers, but I really believe that the majority of cops are trying to do the best they can to keep people safe and uphold the laws. For every one story sensationalized by the media, there are who knows how many stories of cops doing their jobs well. Of course, I come from a family with cops and military-types, and I've also kept myself pretty much out of trouble. I'm also white, and I've always lived in relatively small-town or suburban areas without a whole ton of crime, to give some more perspective.

I kind of don't have a lot of sympathy for people who end up killed because they refuse to obey a police officer. Like I mentioned above, there will always be some bad apples, but I feel like most of the time, if a cop tells you to do something and you resist him or her and attack, you only have yourself to blame if you end up hurt or even shot and killed. You don't have to have a gun in your hand to be a life-threatening danger to a cop, especially if you're a belligerent drunk or you're high on something, and when cops have to shoot they shoot to kill. I think cops have the right to be cautious and treat everyone as potentially dangerous. It's their lives on the line every day.

    What say you?

There are more good cops than bad cops. Unfortunately it is the bad cops who get noticed and cause this shift towards a mindset of hating cops. Furthermore more and more people are growing without learning to have a sort of respect for the police force. When those people happen to end up in a situation with one of the bad cops, things might not end well.

As these situations get worse and worse, more people on both sides are going to die. I sadly would not be surprised if at one point an entire precinct gets assaulted by people and all the officers get murdered.

This wouldn't surprise me in the least, either. There have been what, two or three officers, at least, gunned down in the last month or so. One in particular that I can remember was executed while pumping gas at a freaking gas station. It's a damn shame.

i'll start this off by " fuck the police" Since i'm a blackie i've been profiled before, i've been tackeld to the ground, hand cuffed and even had them get out of a car, chase me, tackle me because they thought i was someone else. I'll comment more later.

With things continuing to seem bleak, it would appear that this remains a valid topic for discussion. But honestly, I don't know what there is to discuss. I think way too much of the police brutality, and the negative impressions society gets of it, are the results of the widespread media coverage of those events. A supposedly brutal police officer guns down a proclaimed innocent person, and the media flares into a storm for a month about that story. Meanwhile there are law enforcement officers out there doing their jobs properly... and it's always those ones that I feel get the backlash for it. I know quite a few police officers, and I can say that they are all good, reasonable people, who would only reach for the trigger if their safety, or that of others around them, were at risk.

I believe that the bottom line to fixing this apparent issue is mutual respect. Officers need to be respectful of peoples' constitutional rights; but on the flip side, people need to be courteous when engaged by an officer. If either side feels they aren't being received with courtesy, there are alternative avenues to resorting to violence.

So many cases in the news seem to be the result of people being idiots. If you're using a pellet gun (or a fake), don't remove the orange tip that shows it as such. It should be obvious that you don't point a gun at a cop. It also should be obvious to just follow the cops' instructions when they show up. Whether you think they shouldn't be there or not, whether you're innocent or not, if they tell you to get down and put your hands up, freaking do it. If you fight 'em and get hurt, that shouldn't be blamed on the cop.

I agree. Of course, this would be easier if the media would stop supporting distrust with their stories apparently designed to cast everyone involved in a bad light regardless of facts.
