Bring back RPOTW?

I see there have been attempts in the past but why not try again. We could use some competition around here.

I don't know how many of you remember ROPTW but it stands for Roleplayer of the Week and was started by OathkeeperXIII in I think like 2008/9.

RPOTW was a weekly competition for roleplayers to choose who, among them had done the best roleplaying that week. Though it started out with some fairly flawed rules, it ended up encouraging some healthy competition around here as well as improvement in activity and quality of people's writing.

It has evolved countless times since it's first installment to KHP. The version I want to bring in is the nomination system. This encourages people to do well in every RP you never know when you're being read for a potential nomination :D

How it will work is we will begin it at the beginning of each week. I will be doing away with the themes, it will be based on any work a roleplayer has done. During the week, do your best in your roleplays. At middle of the week, we will begin nominations. To nominate someone you must provide the name of a character this person has made and a link to their profile. You should also quote an example of a scene this character is in. This scene is required to have been posted within the past two weeks. No earlier. In order to win RPOTW you must be an active, rule following member.

    Example nomination template so far:

    Player: (Example- Hope)
Example Character: ( Example- Josleyn http://www.khplanet.com/forums/roleplay/11996-modern-legend-zelda-ooc-su-2.html#post360203)
    Sample of Roleplay: (Example-
Now where in the world is the nurses office. Josleyn thought to herself as she exited the main building, knowing that the nurses office had it's own building. As she walked, something unusual happened. Josleyn began to feel very tired. She felt odd, as if she were walking through water her movements were normal but she felt slow, as if time had stopped but she was still trying to move through it. Around her, grass, trees, and other various plant life grew right through the cement of campus until it disappeared completely before her eyes. Wherever she was, Josleyn didn't know. But she did recognise a lot of the plant life native to her home in Kokiri. But whatever part of the forst she was in, she didn't recognise it. The air was still, peaceful, holy. She felt a sort of reverecnce for the clearing she found herself in. But more than that, she felt like she had a purpose, something was here that she needed to find. Josleyn followed the path before her to find something in front of her, in the center of the clearing, protruding from a stone with the crest of the royal family, was a sword. As she approached it, the grove suddenly caught on fire and the ground began to shake, throwing Josleyn off her balance. She fell and hit her head on the stone holding the sword. Alarmed, and dizzy, Josleyn rolled back to her feet only to find herself back on campus, standing outside the nurses office.

Feeling disoriented, Josleyn looked around in all directions. Everything was back to normal and there was no one in sight. Worlds weirdest most vivid daydream.... she mused as she entered the nurses office where she was greeted kindly by the nurse "Are you alright dear?."
"Yes ma'am I'm fine. I just heard that a friend of mine was here and I worried. Thought I would check on him if that's alright." Josleyn answered as casually as she could.
"He's sleeping now I believe. How did you know he was here?"
"I heard some girls from his class talking. This is where I assumed he would be."
"Well that's fine, everyone knows you're a friend of his so I'll allow it. But while you're waiting for him to wake up, why not let me have a look at your head."
Josleyn was surprised by the random comment "May I ask why?"
Now it was the nurses turn to look surprised "Does it not hurt at all? Surely, you must at least remember injuring it."
    "......No.... not really."
"Heavens child sit down." the nurse pulled her over to a nearby chair and handed her a mirror "You mean to tell me you don't remember this?" she asked incredulously.
What Josleyn saw in her reflection was unexpected, she looked normal enough except for the bruised skin and cut on her forehead near her right eyebrow. Remembering, this was where she hit her head in her daydream, Josleyn felt an eerie sense of wonder. But, knowing she would sound crazy if she told the actual story to the nurse, she quickly made up her own.
"Oh that." she said with a smile "I was actually going to take care of it on my own later. I just tripped on my way here is all."
Reason for Nomination- (Example- She doesn't suck)
Your advice for this player- (Continue to not suck. Use spell check. etc...)

Anyway what are your thoughts on this topic? Would you like to see RPotW come back? If so, do you agree with this system or are there some changes you would like to see?

It seems simple enough and fairly easy. Though what would rules be about continuous winner week after week or back to back winners. Would there be a rule against or about this?

If someone is genuinely showing superior roleplay ability two weeks in a row, they deserve the title. If someone is winning continuously week after week I can see how that would be a problem. We could make a rule against it. But considering most of our active roleplayers are good competition to each other, I doubt it will be needed.

I'm down for this. The format you've outlined is pretty much the way I would be doing it (specifically in that it draws from work that will already be getting posted, which will also (potentially) help to keep most role plays active.

We could always say that a person that wins twice in a row is ineligible for that many weeks, or something like that, to keep any one person from coming in and completely sweeping every week.

That is the desired outcome of that rule, yes.

My concern is that if we start it up again, no one will get involved. I've noticed past attempts at reviving RPotW has ended in failure. What incentive can we give winners that will make people actually want to participate? I remember Oath had a Hall of Fame at one point (can't find it now but I do remember it) where someone would make them a banner and whatnot. It seemed to work in the past but eh...

I think that with the format of nominating existing posts (rather than people having to go a bit out of their way to create something fresh) more people will be likely to get involved without as much incentive.

Having witnessed RPOTW when we first started it and having witnessed it when we tried it again, I personally prefer the format where each person who is competing tries for something new. The very first RPOTW that was done was a simple set up where the person who was judging it (Kairu at the time, for anybody curious) made a scenario and then everybody who wanted to compete sent the judge a short thing where they worked with the scenario. For example, the one I remember (Again, probably the very first one done) had a scenario where your character was the captain of a ship in the Mass Effect universe and your ship had just been boarded by Geth (Though admittedly the scenario was described in such a way that you wouldn't know it was from Mass Effect had you never actually played Mass Effect).

And then there is the format where we nominate posts people have made. It just isn't appealing to me, plain and simple. It just doesn't seem to have that competitive edge that the first method I dedicated a paragraph to has.

Naturally, you've dedicated a paragraph to explaining your personal preference while putting a simple disclaimer on to the one that you're opposed to. What's so uncompetitive about the method that Hope is pitching compared to the alternative?

There's not much difference that I can see in terms of the competitive nature; the only true difference is where the posts are coming from. I see drawing posts from those that are naturally being out up as carrying benefits for the section as a whole (and by that extension forum activity). If people are vested in it, they'll probably post a little more frequently, and up the standard on their post quality to make it competitive. The quality of RPing in general is more likely to strengthen because that improvements are being put directly into the RPs themselves (rather than being focused into a single write-up once a week, the lessons from which may or may not carry over into their actual role playing).

Speaking of role playing, I'm of the opinion that drawing posts that preexist from running RPs will provide a bit stronger of an insight to how people actually post within an RP condition.

And as I said: I think most people will appreciate that they can just do their thing and still be recognized for their work without having to sit down every week and come up with something extra. It'll give more people more time to actually participate in it from a submissions standpoint.

I agree with Wayward, plus even when Kairu did it and I entered it , to me that was not RPOTW, that was almost more along the lines of writer of the week, earning it's home more in traditional showcase than RP.

I know. I noticed that myself as I was typing last night. It was late and I couldn't quite think of a proper way to word my counter argument for the nomination method. If I were to describe it in a better way, nominating posts people have done in an RP already just doesn't seem competitive. We're seeing this two different ways. As you described, nominating posts includes the possibility of encouraging people to improve their posts throughout the RPs they're in.

But the benefit of giving everybody a scenario to write up is that everybody is given the same parameters to work with. The nomination method is so very broad and the posts that are competing may have nothing in common aside from the fact that they're RPs. If you consider it from the standpoint of other types of competition, entries should have the same guidelines. If one nominated post takes place from a horror RP and another nominated one comes from a romcom, how do you judge that fairly? One of those RPs may have more going on, therefore more for the person to work with.

From a competitive perspective, giving everybody a set of guidelines to work with levels the playing field.

The different genres could be solved by narrowing the submissions to certain themes per week. For example, week one the nominated post should come from a KH related RP, or a Horror in week two. I don't see that being a problem though because that's some part of the fun in RP: Making it work even in situations you don't have much to go on. The Nomination system encourages people to do so.

Though I agree with Desert too, Kairu's way of doing it was very effective. It was more time consuming, and if I remember they had some trouble getting people to enter sometimes. But it had more of a competitive edge. It was fun, and it gave people a chance to submit their best work. He also did away with voting by installing judges, one of them being an Admin, to keep things fair.

Honestly, I think either way would work well. They are both fun and encourage people to stretch themselves a little when it comes to their writing. But the nomination system does so in their every day writing, never knowing which one is going to get pulled for RPOTW. It's also less work for the competitors and seeing as most of our roleplayers currently carry some busy lives, keeping Kairu's system might be more difficult.

I think that with the current atmosphere of the forums and it's needing of more widespread activity, the use of already made posts would be more suitable for our needs.

And perhaps instead of banking things purely on nominations from our peers, everyone wishing to be considered can submit a single post for review by judges at the start of the week, and a decision can be made by the end. Theme or genre-restrictions could be applied once the site is more active again and seeing more action. Or mention can be given to a post for exemplifying a certain theme or genre (like a secondary award for best romantic scene; like how film/stage/music awards have different categories).

That sounds like it would work a bit better than simple nominations.

    We could pull that off.

Do you guys have any thoughts on judges? I think 3 is a safe number. We need enough to keep things fair but still have people left over to participate.

I would go with people not in RP's to judge the written bids. Though to me still it's sort of like a writing contest.

Now if you were to do nominations of themes, I see that working, though not in the same way you highlighted. I almost picture it something like the Oscars. So more like the "Most Romantic Post" week, or "The Most Action Pack."

I remember RPOTW... good times. :p

If my opinion means anything, I think a basic nomination/vote system is your best bet. Simple is key in this forum because it's not very active. Instead of putting in judges and having optional submissions of your own work to them, why not just nominate yourself for voting?

I would hold off on themes until you get more action around here too unless you do it Destiny's way and making multiple themes per week. There aren't enough roleplays out to make a singular theme. You'd be rotating between "Action, Kingdom Hearts, and the occasional Romance"

If we're still about this, another idea that might work for us would be to run somethings more like a "Survivor" type event for RPers. KH-VIds ran something to that effect a while back with some success.

There, they called it Role Play Idol. Basically, five-six role players all signed up with a character each (mostly fresh, inherently average characters), and through ensuing weeks, they would be put through challenges, namely events that they had to put their characters through. For example, one week during a run of RPI saw the contestants paired up and playing their characters through an argument, with one character starting it and then eventually the pair resolving the dispute. Relatively simple challenges to see how people navigate their characters.

Challenges mostly lasted through a week or so, and after each one, a member of the cast was eliminated from the contest.

I think that with the right involvement, we could definitely kick something like that off.

I like this idea actually. I'd like to see something good come of it .

This is my favorite idea so far. With our growing activity I can see this working. Plus, it's simple enough but it still has the competitive edge that we've been looking for. I still think leaving things up to vote is something to be considered because it gets everyone involved not just the contestants. Thoughts?

I think that's a cool idea. What's stopping us from trying a few of these ideas. As stated with growing activity, we may be able to pull it off. But I really like the RP Survivor Idea.
