Obesity in young ones

Discussion in 'Mature Discussion' started by Sephiroth X Slasher, Jun 2, 2008.

  1. Personally I find this totally unacceptable I have seen to many kids 6,7,8 whatever, with wastelines bigger than mine. Should we have a lawish thing that has schools serve balanced lunches?

I've heard alot of different arguments on this topic. Alot of parents think the schools should serve healthier meals, but the schools say that its to expensive to provide healthier lunches, or the school will lose money if the kids don't like the lunches and bring lunches from home. So it can go both ways really.

  3. Ok well how about a vending with those 100 calories snacks

I think that schools should serve healthier lunches, but it is mostly the parent's fault by allowing the kid to eat so much junk and not be active.

    No Vending Machines period!

Gym should be a REAL class, not an elective.

I definitely agree with that. Gym should be a mandatory course.

It is also the parents' fault too you know. When I baby cries, you shut them up with a bottle! That is so wrong. Let them cry, they are not going to die.

But, yeah, GYM needs to be madatory. I lost weight by doing volleyball. Heheh!

Well, yeah it is not the school nor the environment fault. It is their own fault for being obese. Learn how to choose your meals more carefully.

    Yes, parents are especially involved.

    And gym as well.

One of the important things is that kids not only get a healthy diet in school, but a healthy diet at home. And especially at home because that's where they live. I see some many parents now that rather than addressing kids' hunger with some nice, money-bought home-cooked food, they got out and get McDonalds or Burger King. It really saddens me because Burger King is an example of how the food business works; the prices of whole-food rises and the prices of fast-food lowers. It's sad, and unfortunate. We need better food programs in these schools.

But in order to do that we need to improve the food quality at home as well. In fact just the other week everyone in my school went on a lunch-strike, where everyone brought food from home. xD It was awesome.

The reason kids are obese isn't primarily due to consumptions issues (They do play a role, but aren't the main reason). According to my Nutrition professor, "Speaking english is what kills you."

Consider the Japanese diet: They consume boatloads more Saturated Fat than the typical North American. This means, more cholesterol...but fewer heart attacks?

Rather than be amusing and list every single place like he did, I'll just say...quite often in the world, this is true.

Particularly worth note however, is the so called "France Effect." They have one of the worst diets I've ever seen in France (not to insult the french, I love the food...I just mean from a nutrition perspective). So much fatty food (cheeses), high glycemic index carbohydrate (tons of bleached grain bread), and wine! Kids drink wine from the age of 8.

Now look at the average French person....are they obese? (No) Will they have a heart attack? (No). Somehow, their diet is the perfect blend of everything that keeps them healthy.

So what is killing us/making us in particular unhealthy? The LIFESTYLE. It's twofold. First, everyone sits around the TV screen all day...I think I remember hearing recently that the average kid now watches about 6 hours of TV a day. That's like half of their waking hours!

The second problem is for parents, and it's the stress. Here everything is rush rush, make these appointments, beat traffic, finish work by 3 o'clock, catch this bus, etc. Stress has all but been proven a link to obesity and incidence of stoke/heart attack.

If we want to stop the obesity problem, we would have to destroy television and the internet...which isn't going to happen. So we will probably have to fix the second problem, try to relax a bit as adults...and be better parents. Because everyone who mentioned this is right: it begins at home.

I don't get it too. Chinese people eat FATTY foods, such as Cripsy Duck, Cripsy Chicken, and Crispy Pig, and yet they are skinny and healthy! WTF?

Well, anyway, people should stress out more, so they can lose weight. I been stressing out on finals for the past two weeks, and I lost 10 pounds! Holla! xD

    Yukou.... XD

Kind of funny, because for a year and a half I was eating minimal amounts of food a day (like an apple or two, sandwiches, occassional pizza, taco bell, etc), and I had lost like 15 pounds in like, 3 months. Then again I was walking 3 miles a day and was on the Frisbee team.

    *explodes*

^^See the Chinese eat the perfect blend of beans and rice. A correlation has been found between eating both beans and rice and longevity (namely, groups that ate one or the other, or neither, tended to die younger). Odd...the attempt at explaining this is that beans give two essential amino acids, and rice give another two.

    I wanted to say though...wtf?

A baby cries because that's how it communicates. If a baby wasn't hungry and it was crying, a bottle wouldn't appease it. Maybe it needs a change for instance, or maybe it's feeling lonely, or scared.

So yes...if you didn't try to shut a baby up with a bottle (at least try), then the baby would die. I mean, what's a baby supposed to do, go cook a delicious thanksgiving dinner?

Besides....a baby's body fat composition is primarily 'brown fat.' Which isn't going to lead anyone to be obese.

Well it is true. You got to burn your fat. Well I don't know why but every time I stress out, I don't eat, and then I am losing weight. I hope when I go to college I lose more weight. College = Major Stress expecially when I am majoring in Pre-Med.

But don't blame anyone because you are fat, blame yourself. You made wrong choices. It doesn't hurt to eat out, but look before you do. Mostly restuarant that are not 3 stars or above, usually cook with old oil, which is more fatty than regular clean oil. So know what you eat!

    Holla!

Well, I mean when the baby isn't hungry or anything. Like when you are so tired and you want to find a quick way on shutting the baby up. Trust me I seen this in some families. And some families give their babies Pepsi or Coke! No wonder why they cry!

My aunt is trying a new method with her son. Feeding him on a timely schedule every day. Now almost 2 or 3, he is use to it. If you give him a bottle before his time, he won't take it. He only like snacks. Now that is eating right! xD

    1) In college, you're likely to gain weight...it happened to most people, and heck it happened to me. The problem is that you make plans and never follow through with them because you're busy.

    2) Not eating + Stress = Short life. I'd change my outlook if I were you man, that's not the right way to health and happiness.

    3) Pre-med is a joke :p It's med school (and the MCAT) that are stressful. Besides that, you're spoonfed through it...I guess you could take some tough electives, but so could anyone.

    4) An oil's age does not determine or change its fat makeup. The type of oil does that. If you use Coconut Oil, there is significantly more saturated/trans fat than if you chose a healthier alternative such as Olive Oil, or Flaxseed oil. It's got nothing to do with the oil being old...I mean, if anything when it's old, some of the fat can be skimmed off the top and it gets 'healthier.'

    5) By age two or three, a child should have solid meals...not bottle feed. They should have a decent number of baby teeth and be eating at more regular intervals...unless of course you meant 2 or 3 months.

    6) Giving your kid pepsi is a problem...you're quite right.

Actually thats not true, the Chinese food you eat is much different, cooked so differently. If you went to China and eat it would be extremely different as there is much less fat and salt in there food.

When my stepdad had a heart-attack, that caused my mom to start making healthy food. Sometimes it takes a horrible event to change things.

In case you were wondering, my stepdad is fine:D
