I suck with photoshop. Right now I have GIMP, but I'm not sure if thats the most ideal program for this.

Any advice either regarding how to work photoshop programs, or just a better photoshop program would be nice jigglypuff.gif

GIMP works ok. You just have to get used to it. That's what I use. Most of the effects are difficult to use on the whole image as they tend to overdistort it. My suggestion is two-fold.

A: Use the effects on duplicate layers set below your main image. For instance, duplicate your stock. Set the top layer to 70%-80% opacity and play around with different effects on the bottom layer (fractal trace, make seamless, oilify, etc.) Also, using different lighting/color effects on the different layers helps. You may also wish to add another layer with just your stocks focal point (cut out the background) set to 100% opacity for certain effects. If an effect shows more than you'd like through your focal point, copy just that and make it so you can't see through it. Depends on if you like the effect there or not. I've done with and without.

B: Select areas of your background in your stock and effect those only. Using fractal trace especially on the background areas around your focal point results in some rather interesting outcomes.

The other problem you get is with brushing. GIMP's default brushes suck. But you can download brush packs off of DeviantArt. With brushing, use a separate layer for that. Or even multiple layers. Set one of the in front of your focal point, the other behind. Tends to add more depth.

Just a few hints. I may post a few tutorials for GIMP, despite my being a GFX newbie, as I seem to be the person here who uses it most. That way you can see more clearly some of the things I'm talking about.

As for PS, I can't help you there. My attempt to download it failed.

EDIT: Check out the tutorials section. I made one last night and posted it. Hope it helps. Some of the things I mentioned don't show up as well in that sig as they do i others, but you should get the idea anyway.

Well, in my opinion, Photoshop has a much more user-friendly interface. Both for advanced and beginner (assuming you start out learning and not jumping right into the fray). I suppose GIMP could have that same possibility too, but it just has 3 separate windows when you're working. I like the gray bg when you're working in PS, and the ability to change the color of the gray bg too.

So... it all kinda depends on what you start with. PS works with 3D layers though, and has other neat little features like that. I don't personally know much about GIMP except that when I was deciding between the two, PS was much more appealing. lol Primarily because I could actually download it (I had issues with GIMP).

    Go PS!

See, I'll agree with you there. PS is waymore user friendly. It takes a while to get used to GIMP. But it is what it is: a free app (and for those of you who say PS can be free, you know what I meant). And for being that, it's actually pretty powerful once you know how to use it.

You know you can change the backgrounds in GIMP too, right? PS may have some benefits over GIMP, but that ain't one of them.

And I actually had the opposite issue with downloading the programs. I got GIMP right off the bat, but I had issues trying to download PS.

I do agree there. I've seen some damn good signatures made from GIMP. I know a few people who can really do some magic with it over at planetrenders. I almost wanted to go over to GIMP because of it. xD
And what do you mean by change the background? Like, displace, edit, etc? o.o I've never really used GIMP, anyway. :x
PS is a big program. I had some troubles trying to get it on my old computer because of the huge size. It would stop after like an hour of downloading. lol
