Affirmative Action

Affirmative Action, for those who dont know, is : "policies intended to promote access to education or employment aimed at a historically socio-politically non-dominant group (typically, minority men or women of all races). Motivation for affirmative action policies is to redress the effects of past and current wrongful discrimination and to encourage public institutions such as universities, hospitals and police forces to be more representative of the population."

This is absolutely stupid. Affirmative Action is just moving someone to a higher/lower position simply because of their social standpoint or race. Two possible employee's enter a meeting to see who will be employed, and if there is one majority and one minority employee, then the minority employee wins simply because he/she is a minority. It undermines people in the majority, and overhypes people in the minority. This is supposed to help keep society "equal" when in reality it just sets the standard that our society is not equal by setting a special expectation for people's of a different race.

Ladies and gentlemen, the correct term is "reverse discrimination". When society tries too hard to right the wrongs of the past and rather than balance the scales simply wieghts them in the opposite direction. In otherwords, the majority is now descriminated against in the name of making it up to the monority.

For those of you who disagree, allow me to provide an example. There are tons of schlarships out there. However, as a white, male, Christian, heterosexual person I qualified for less then half of them, probably less than a quarter of them simply based on those characteristics. Had I been female, of a different ethnicity, an atheist, or gay I would have been able to get way more financial aid. How is this right?

Another example. I'm a type I diabetic. I applied, shortly after my diagnosis for medicaid. However, according to the government, I made too much money. I was asked so many questions about my background, from second languages to possible minority relations. This lady in the office was looking for any way to call me a minority. On the way out, I asked her whether or not if I had been any other ethinicity, if I would have qualified. She nodded. So basically, I was denied medicaid for the simple fact that I was white.

    That's bullshit.

Hmm I haven't heard of this much. Sounds extremely unfair and dumb though.

I'm cuban (though I look white), agnostic and striaght. Not sure how those will affect anything. But I feel like I'm all over the board.

    Someone help me out. xD

Yeah. Basically being a white male puts you at the bottom of society now just because of the wrongs that happened in the past. And yet still being a white male is supposedly being at the top of society.

Wow, I`ve been thinking this same thing for a while. I thought i was the only one who felt this way.

(I am also a white male.)

Also im not sure if this is the same or not but i got in trouble in school just cause i said i was proud of being white. And the said that thats racist. You dont call a black male recist when they say black power do you?

    I think its terribly unfair/unjust

That's another thing that bothers me. All of these scholarships in place for only minorities. But, if someone were to start a scholarship for all whites, that would be racist. Now I'm not saying I want to do that, I'm just saying it's bullshit that they can and we can't. Personally I think no scholarships of the sort should exist. Demographics should never influence how much financial aid you can get, or anything else, like getting a job or accepted to college. Ever. Minority or not.

^ thats what my next point was going to be.
Also black comedians make jokes about whites all the time. But whites get attacked if they make jokes about blacks.

And, Like people call me "cracker" everyday. Yet if i ever said nigger I`d get attacked.

Nigger is the slang term for negro which is spanish for black.

You see, this is the same basic principle as black history month or gay pride parades. These groups try so hard to be equal, yet they purposely set themselves apart.

Such as, teachers at my school would kill me if I said the term 'beaner' or 'nigger' in front of them, yet I've purposely said the word 'cracker' (the racist term against whites. Surprisingly, there IS one) and the teacher's did nothing. I even confronted a teacher once about it and she didn't even know how that was wrong!

America seems to be overpopulated with (what is in my opinion) the worst type of racism. Not the people that treat minorities badly, but the people who treat minorities better than everyone else. These jerks who vote for Obama because he's black and think it's okay to hit somebody because he's male, but it's wrong to hit a female.

And, I will make it a point if I ever go through with it and run for president, to make things like this illegal. And if anybody goes against me I will seriously say this: "So, a woman comes up to me, hits me, and I hit her back. She says 'You're not supposed to hit a woman!'. Of course, I will have to say this: 'You have equal rights now. Get used to it or BACK TO THE KITCHEN. AND I WANT A SANDWICH!'".

I swear to JEBUS that I will say that.

Oh that's another one I love. No hitting women. I'll be damned if I'm gonna be someones punching bag and take it cause they're a woman and I can't hit them.

And you know, you'd think there'd be more minorities against this. In some cases, it actually hurts them. For instance, quotas for college are harmful against Asians as without them, many of them are more apt to be accepted, due to the high priority placed on academic achievement by Asian families.

People cannot be totally equal. Some people are smarter, faster, or stronger than others. But people like the idea of equal oppurtunity. The reason many people say race is not an issue is because they want the illusion of equality. But that is not the case and never will be. Racism will be around as long as there is race.

We just have to put measures in place so we don't go backwards.

True, there will always be someone in society who has predjudices against a group of people due to race, gender, religion, etc. However, society as a whole, and the institutions within our society (schools, governments, etc.) should not be furthering this by instituting systems in which demographics are a determining factor in success. We may never be able to convince the entire world of equality. But instituting systems that give advantages to minority groups isn't really improving the situation. Especially since the problem they are trying to solve is an identical one. The problem of a system that gives on group an advantage over another.

Yes, some people are smarter. Some people are faster. Stronger. And society should recognize them for their talents, not because they belong to a certain demographic. As long as we continue to do this, those people will continue to be beaten out by those who are dumber, slower, and weaker.

I completely agree that this places unfair advantages simply because of race. It undermines achievments of people that dont fit the simple race/gender requirment, and is absurd.

Exactly. I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard that about 500 more full-ride scholarships are given annually to black people with 1500's on their SAT's than white people who scored 1550's or more.

This all goes full loop to the fact that people care more about making themselves look better than trying to make the world look better.

    ^ youre exactly right.

as long as we "look good" and "are fair to disadvantaged minorities" then its all good in terms of our appearance, and thats all that matters apparently.

Put very simply, this is just descrimination in the opposite direction.

    Excuses, excuses really.

And I think the greatest example of Affirmative Action right now is the presidential election. Obama and Hilary are getting all the attention, when you would expect a pro-gun, pro-gay, pro-choice republican to be getting the nod.

Another good example is with religions. Why is it that the same prcinciples that give every other religion in this country the right to display their beliefs and religious simbols with pride are in turn used to tell Christians that they can't. Hang a cross in a public place and all hell breaks loose. It's us horrible Christians trying to convert the world, oppressing the other religions. The corss has to be taken down. Now tell a Jewish person that he can't display a Star of David in that same public, and all of a sudden we are oppressing him and his right to express his religion.

I have never held any ill will against a person of another religion. In fact I believe, personally, that there are more similarities between the various religions than are obvious at the surface, but that is a matter for another debate. I do not hinder the right of a Jewish person, or a Bhuddist, or any other religion from expressing their faith. Why is it, then, that so many people seem to have a problem with me expressing my faith?

And the sad truth is, these people are not the majority of their indvidual demographics. Most people are perfectly happy to sit back and let bygones be bygones. The problem is there are those few in every group, whether it be a religiou minority, ethicnic minority, etc, that insist on getting this sort of special treatment. All they're doing, and the majority of people know it, is prolonging the issue by always bringing it up.

And the even sadder part is this. Most of the people who are leading this effort, and many of those who are just part of it, know damn well that this is the case. They're simpling dragging it out, keeping it alive, because they can profit off of it. They know that the best way to end it all is to just shut and be equal. But they know how much they have to gain personally from exploiting this, so they're dragging the issue on for their own benefit.

    Excellent point.
I've seen this on several occasions. I have my own beliefs, and am a devout Christian. And I've gotten you're common go-to-hell look from people who are getting in troube for expressing their religion, while I get away with it. And I've started feeling just a little guitly about that.

No matter where you look at this, according to our very own written laws, all peoples have a right to express themself through speech. And in my own opinion, religion should be in that category. I don't always agree with other beliefs, but they should have the right to express their beliefs.

Actually, that's kinda backwards from what I'd have though. I usually see it the other way around. Those of other religions can express their's freely while I, as a Christan, can't. Granted this doesn't really happen in t he course of everyday conversation. It's more an overall trend with laws and societies. It has to be Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetnings (not that I mind either phrase) but you can't say Merry Christmas. That's excluding people who aren't Christian. But Happy Hanukah (sp?) you have to let people say that one.

I once saw a pretty good article on the subject. Written by a Jewish man who was making the same point. If I were Jewish or some other religion and someone says Merry Christmas to me, I say thank you very much and return the sentiment. Perhaps wish him a Happy Hanukah on my part since he offered a Merry Christmas on his.

definitely. That makes sense. You don't have to agree with someone in order to allow them their beliefs. Like in school it used to be "christmas vacation" and now its "winter vacation". A girl was suspended from my school for wearing a "what would jesus do" shirt.
