Kingdom Hearts - The Keyblade Academy - Chapter 1 - Remnants

It was yet another standard starting day at the now world famous Keyblade Academy. The endeavor, started by Sora, with the help of the likes of Riku, Kairi, and of course, King Mickey, and a host of others, had blossomed into one of the greatest institutions within any world. In its infancy, it had only hosted some ten youths in their education with the keyblades. But over the years, the project had sprouted form its humble back alley beginnings, and into a full fledged educational system in itself. Some hundred or more students, on average, were now enrolled, all having joined the ranks of the Keybearers. To nearly all of the teachers, and those veteran students, it was nothing short of amazing that so many young ones would arise with such a legendary gift.

One would have assumed that the sudden influx of new students over the passed year wold have lead to a panic amongst the teachers, and older students. But by far, there was not a single hint of a panic in the face of such numbers. If anything, the increase in numbers, as sharp as it was, had lead to a great invigoration of the teachers to teach, and of the upper class students to lead the younger ones to their success. The augmentation of membership, had, by leaps and bounds, created a stronger, more family-like bond among those associated with The Academy.

Arashi, like so many other students before him, had come a ong way since his first semester as an Academy student. he had entered into its walls a complete novice in the ways of magic, and combat. He had been ignorant, and at times, in the middle of his previous two years, been arrogant, even almost losing grip to the point of losing his keybade. But that had all passed over, and now, he was both humbled, and knowledgeable in the various arts of swordplay, and magic, as well as an overall intelligent individual.

On this, the first day of yet another semester of work, and study, he strode swiftly down the basement all, walking lightly upon the air itself, graced by the small cracks of light that entered through the small, rectangular windows which lined the hallways. His mind was wrapped solely on his day to come. It wasn't to be too busy. As a senior student of the school, he had completed the classroom portions of the curriculum, and was now working primarily towards the completion of his practical training. Today's schedule: Sword training with Cloud, Spellcasting with Yen Sid presiding, and then, free training room hours.

And with this schedule, so wrapped around his mind, he had forgotten something that few others would have forgotten so easily: That this day, just so happened to be his eighteenth birthday.

Villain's Vale stood upon the horizon, beyond The Academy's gates, beyond the castle, deemed still as Hollow Bastion, beyond even the mountain trail through the Great Maw. It's ghastly spires, left to near ruin by years of neglect, stood as the solitary reminder of the darkness that had, at a time, nearly consumed the worlds, leaving no light to shine through. It was the last piece that remained to an otherwise scattered puzzle of torment and destruction.

These had been memories, and pieces, that had been designated as too dangerous for The Academy, and was, hence, a forbidden area to students.

But there were still those who made use of such a decrepit, run down structure. People who resided with their hearts in the darkness, so close to losing them entirely. Yet still, they did not lose them, for despite the darkness within their hearts, they were still strong hearts, strong enough to resist falling victim to the darkness within them. Such people were able to manipulate the heartless, and the darkness itself, even if it was dangerous.

Thus was what Medea Lazareth had become.

She walked ever closer to the Vale, her dress flowing behind her, fluttering in the light breeze. With each step she took upon the hardened, rock ground, her hard soled sandals tapped out a rhythmic echo that bounced off of the hills around her home. Were she an enemy to the owner of the Vale, this sound would have likely lead her to her demise. But fortunately, she was well established with said owner, and as close a friend as they would have ever asked for in their time.

Within moments, she had reached the base of the main tower, standing before a door, and pried open the door leading into a dimly lit stairwell. She made to ascend the stairs, but was, in this process, hindered by a drawling, seductive, feminine voice.

"What brings you back so early?" asked Medea's feline accomplice, Astriella.

"Just wondering if Maleficent is around at the moment," she said, staring at the two, redish, shadow shrouded eyes. "The Academy is enjoying its first day back. We may be able to get in some good efforts against them. So is she here?"

"I couldn't say. I've been asleep all day. It's so boring around here."

Rin gulped as he walked the lonely cobble-stone path to school. He had been picked on the year before because of his size. It wasn't that he was small, it was that all the other kids in the second year were TALL.

Rin grumbled to himself, hoping we would make better friends this time around. Though he was surprised.
As Rin got up to the castle-grounds, he didn't see many familiar faces, though he was sure the rest of these students were in third year.

Rin roamed the garden, sitting down a bench before the bell rang. He examined himself- making sure he looked as if he was a perfect student. He then summoned his keyblade, then it disappeared again as Rin sat up.

"Hey, Rin! Guess what, I'm gonna be the Academy's Guidance Counselor this year" A voiced ringed through Rin's ear as he faced his shoulder.

Rin grinned, "Mr. Cricket!" He said to Jiminy- he had been one of Rin's favorite teacher.

Jiminy smiled, "I just wanted to let you know that if you;re having any problems this year- just come to me!" He smiled, fixing up his little tie. "I gotta go now, so Adios, Rin!" Mr. Cricket said, hopping away.

The rat was lying still in a pool of it's own blood, an arrow protruding from both sides of its neck. Yuni kicked the rat into the corner, but only after wrenching the arrow free, and laughing as the nervous system of the rat made it twitch once more. She smiled. It wasn't a mocking or cruel smile, but a genuine smile of something that had been enjoyed.

She slung the bow over her shoulder, and placed the still blood-caked arrow back into her quiver. She looked out of the window of her room at the top of a spire of the Castle, into the abyss of nothing. She knew who was out there, hidden among another of the worlds, though as yet she couldn't see them. There was that foul taste in the air again.

"Why must you trouble us now?" Yuni muttered, a look of disgust on her face. Then she remembered what day it was. The Academy had returned. Veteran 4th year students had scattered to fight creatures all over the worlds, and been replaced by first years, barely able to wield their pathetic weaponry known as 'Keyblades.'

That mysterious figure she had seen slipping into the shadows, what seemed years ago.. well, they wouldn't want to talk to her. Oh no, but she wouldn't have the choice now.

"Come to the flame little moth, come to the light of my firey eyes.."

It seemed like it was time to get this Castle awake..

"You're not focusing, Sarah." the old man was saying as he walked around his desk and behind the redheaded girl sitting on a bench facing a room with targets hovering around the vacant air.
Sarah tried to ignore her annoyance which was burrowing itself deeper into her mind and tried harder to pay attention to the target who she had been pointing her keyblade tip at for a half hour now trying to get the right spell. Each time she tried she got the wrong spell. "Find the heat within you that creates the fire."
"I'm trying!" Sarah said in a hoarse whisper "Master Yen Sid-"
"-You CAN Sarah. Magic isn't something you just can or can not do. It comes with the keyblade." he interrupted her patiently.
Sarah growled irritably under her breath and tried one more time. She brought to her as much power as she could and the tip of her keyblade glowed faintly. "Fire!"
When at first nothing happened Sarah wasn't suprised. She was about to just forget it but then her keyblade grew hot in her hand and the blade glowed bright gold.
Yen Sid only stepped back a little as the keyblade began to vibrate in Sarah's hand and Sarah's hopes were dashed as a bold of lightning shot from the ceiling and shattered through the target on a fast path toward Yen Sid and Sarah. Yen Sid quickly stepped in front of Sarah and redirected the lightning bolt in a different direction. With an earthshattering crash, it struck the desk and papers and wood flew everywhere.
Sarah and Yen Sid stared at the desk for a long while before, with a sheepish look on her face, Sarah turned to face her Magic instructor.

Maleficent was in the Evil's Queen's castle, but the castle itself was changed to fit Maleficent's need. The castle was dark purple as it was surrounded by thorns & thunderclouds over it. "My, my, my. This is an honor to meet with all of you once more." Maleficent was at a large, round table along with other villains. "This is such a splendid occasion. Besides, why should we try to do things on our own when we can join together & get revenge!" "That is quite true my darling. What we need is the powers of that girl." "Oh yes! Isn't she's suppossed to be going to the Academy by now ever since that Princess of Heart, Kairi, came to take her to Radient Garden?" "Kairi... she's still of good use in our plans. No matter where she goes, she'll always be followed. As for the girl herself, her heart is pure in ways that even we can't even comprehend." "& where is that apprentice of yours? Let me guess. Still hanging around at Villain's Vale? Heh. She'll freeze herself to death." "Enough. There's no reason to talk down to her. Besides, we have another ally that want to be useful in our plans." Maleficent looked back, seeing a mirror with a face in it...

Dawn was nearly approaching its end, the sun's glare shined upon the world and yet it barely shined upon a castle that was near the horizon of Radiant Garden. Atop this castle stood a figure motionless, it watched the sun arise, his silver armor revealing the ever noticeable nobody symbol on his chest barely shined with the small specs of light that where reaching it. The figures eye's as noticeable as the 2 swords sheathed on his back and side examined the lower areas of the castle as he spotted a smaller figure then his own.

The figure gracefully fell from the top of the castle, a vast 400 foot drop and as quickly as he fell he landed crouched a few feet in front of his target without as much as cracking the ground. He looked up and spoke "what are our orders...Yuni?"

Yuni grew a slight grin and replied "We are to depart now..Dante"

The rang and Rin dashed over to the two giant double-doors that marked the entrance to the Academy. Unfortunately- when he got into the main corridor, it had already been two minutes since the bell.

Rin gulped, "Is there anyone around here?" The hallways were empty, and he had forgotten where the Third Year class was.

"Hello?" Rin called out, his voice almost echoing.

A small figure walked along the rooftops of radiant garden. He estimated the number of students but soon gave up. I never was good at math He thought as his black eyes scanned the city.

He continued walking, flipping one blade out of his holder and flipping it back. The resulting Chink and as it closed and Shinkand it opened pleased him, or at least he thought it did. He decided not to let him mind dwell on those matters as he watched the giant doors close.

"Well time to report to Yuni", he said aloud and sprinted along the rooftops. He joined the two figures sooner than was expected, for after a few minutes of running he had used a dark portal. He emerged from the tunnel of darkness and bowed to Yuni.

    "Any specific orders?"

"Master Sora." Rin greeted the teacher, bowing, "I can't believe it has already been a whole Summer." Rin shrugged, then looked around.

"Oh, yeah- I was kind of having trouble finding my Third-Year class..." Rin blushed, a little embarrassed.

"We are ready to depart now..Dante" She smiled. Though of course, Dante was being rather a show off. Indeed he may need to be knocked down a few pegs. She whispered to the winds, and they agreed to send a gust smashing into Dante's side.

In this wind, Yuni heard the rustle of clothing behind her, and turned.

Yuni eyed the figure up and down. Oh yes, she remembered. He owed her a report. And unless he was going to deliver it now, he best get running.
"What is it now?" she spat, as she checked the flint arrowheads for any damage. "And I warn you now runt, it best be good. Because I'm in a hurry."

Gondra rose to his feet. He decided not to take annoyance at the fact he was called runt and went on with his report. "The doors have closed and I think the first class has started. There are at least a hundred or more students."

He flipped a blade in and out a few times before clicking it back into place. "I don't know how well they can use their ability's yet.." He wasn't sure how to end his report so he waited for orders, not that she was that great of a leader, at least in his opinion.

Will stood in the courtyard, testing his powers. He quickly looked around the yard and made sure no one was there before he made dark fire surround his arm up to his shoulder. He heard someone nearby and quenched the fire. His arm was warm and bright red. He used ice to cool it down so it looked normal. He then pulled his hoodie sleeve down and lifted a harness from the ground. It had a large sheath on it, containing his fenrir keyblade. He only used that if he had to. He looked up and saw Rin talking to Sora. He strode over. "Hey Rin, Hello Master Sora." He said, nodding in Sora's direction.

"The new students aren't a threat." A voice spoke out. A small blue orb floated in the middle of Yuni, Dante, and Gondra. It expanded to be bigger than a door. Motx walked out of it. "There is no point in attacking the Academy right now. We have more important matters to attend to. Such as the witch Maleficent. Yuni. If you truly want to fight the Academy, we will need to ensure we are the only force against the Academy. If there are multiple forces against it instead of one united force, then we risk a higher chance to be defeated."

Motx paused for a moment. "I have a simple plan Yuni. You and I go to Maleficent and make a deal with her. Get her to ally with us. Our two groups together are much stronger than apart. When we're united, we can take down the entire Academy in one swift stroke."

About an hour later, Sarah exited the spell tower and into the courtyard. She looked ill and very embarassed. After she had helped Master Yen Sid clean up his training office, she tried an even more simple spell of putting out a candle with water. She had succeeded that time... but drenched quite a few papers while she was at it. With one of Yen Sid's lectures being the last part of the lesson, Sarah left to go to her free hour. "Dang it" she thought to herself angrily "I"m a senior and master hand to hand combat but I cant use magic any better then the regular freshman after four years going to this school." she walked across the courtyard as she pushed her books into her bag and decided to take a walk around the courtyard with what time she had before she had to go practise swordplay with Master Cloud.

Arashi stood, transfixed in front of a mechanical steal door, shining in a silver light in the morning sun, creeping in through the windows. Why they had chosen to leave the arena in the basement area, he had never truly understood. Perhaps it was that such a place provided the perfect psychological weapon with which to train the students. The lack of space, and of course, the fact that if they were actually attacked down here, they would be surrounded, and boxed in, having to fight at their best simply to escape. But then, the arena had also been designed, and integrated into the academy's layout about five years ago, just before Arashi had arrived. So that given, it was likely that the basement was the only place left to expand into without having to build a completely new wing.

But aside from this trivial matter, he was most in thought of the practice spare ahead. Master Cloud was one of the most accomplished swordsmen in all the worlds, having battled, and matched evenly against the mighty Sephiroth in battle. For such a legend to be a teacher here, instructing a mind so young as Arashi's was an unfathomable honor to the student. The battle, this time, would be one that would require all of Arashi's wits, and tactics. But would they be enough?

Well, only one way I'll know...

He pressed his hand firmly on the release button, which was rather warm, considering that the morning chill still permeated through the hallways. The door's mechanisms shifted around within the walls, and the two halves of it slid through opposite sides of the walls. As they parted, they opened his view to a large, rectangular room, the rough size of a basketball court. The floors, and walls of this room were made from a hard mat padding, and doors along the side walls lead off into subsections of the training arena. Standing erect in the center of the main arena, was none other than Cloud Strife, clearly waiting for Arashi to arrive.

"You're early, Arashi," he said, in a tone that threatened sarcasm.

"I know, I just figured it would be best if I allowed myself time to stretch. So, what are the rules going to be like this time? Magic allowed?"

"Naturally, magic will be allowed for this spare. But there will be another element added to this bout. You see, you won't be working alone in this battle. I've arranged for another student to join us for a two on one, to test how well you work with others in combat."

Makes sense. Who is the other?"

"You'll find out when they get here."

(Tired, will post for Medea later).

Sora looked over and saw a student that just like Rin, he saw a spark. As will was walking over Sora almost forgot that Rin was lost, he thought maybe Will could help him out. He still had to talk to mickey about the simulation. "Ah, hello there Will, it's nice to see you again, has your year started off good this time?"

Will smiled. "Same as always, trouble starting second I am through the gate." He joked, stretching while he said it. He was anxious to get to swordplay class because He always fought Master Cloud and it was an actual challenge for him.

    Disappointment...

Maleficent hadn't come around as of yet, and Medea, was left alone, with the exception of Astriella, who had curled up in the corner of the tower. Mal was normally late for hearing Medea's reports these days as it was. She had been busying herself trying to pull together some sort of alliance with other, like-minded individuals to herself. Individuals that wanted Sora out of the way as much as she did.

So long as she gets here soon. Even my patience has limits.
