Makeup, Magazines and Self-Esteem

So I'm curious, some discussion (in the wrong place :p) occurred and resulted in a spin-off discussion relating to makeup and self-esteem.

So what do you think? Is makeup good? Does it empower you? Does it make you feel like a slave to the cosmetics industry?

I'm also going to kill two birds with one stone and ask about magazines, models, and any other 'pop culture beauty' media. Are we idolizing the perfect ideal? Is it a bad thing?

EDIT: Specifically, the recycling unemployment thing is bad logic because it creates a false dichotomy. This means the argument supposes there are two options: Either you make jobs with recycling, or people are unemployed. However there are a whole wealth of perfectly viable alternatives....just as there are viable alternatives to the cosmetic industry. These people could make a profit in zillions of other ways.

I personally don't believe in makeup, looking up to models, and stuff. It has nothing to do with self-steem.

A person should accept what you look like. You shouldn't have to wear what everyone else is wearing, what's in or what all the stars are wearing. You should wear what you want, look like who you want, and so on. You're your own person and only you can tell it so you should dress the way you like it. You shouldn't judge people neither. Everyone is unique.

Now for make up, I forget teh exact age but if you start wearing make up younger than I think 13 you get acne more as you grow up, and if you wear makeup before I believe 24 your skin ages faster. When you wear make up, you're wearing chemcials not needed. Humans were created without wearing make up so why should we wear it? Because it makes us look good? No, in the long run it makes us look worst. It'll age our skin faster. That's why when you look at the stars without makeup they look terrible. I saw a picture of Miley Cyrus without makeup and at first I though it was 60 year old until I read it. That's just plain sad, a 17 year old looking like a 60 year old without make up. I wear no make up or any acne stuff, never have and probaly won't start till maybe college. I have no acne what's so ever. Sure my skin is pale and stuff so I now and then I want to wear makeup to add color, but I decided against it. I don't wear blush, anti acne junk, lip stick(I do wear lip balm but only because I play flute and piccolo and I need to keep my lips moist), eye liner, so on. I personally think I look fine, in fact so many friends and even guys themselves told me I look pretty, beautiful, hot, so on. This is without chemicals.

Now umm where does the self esteem come in at?

Right well i'm on both sides of this arguement, so what i type probably makes more sense in my head then it does here.

For one, makeup is something people are rather dependent on. For instance smokers need nicotine, women who use make up are quite similar. Just not as severe. With make up it is more of a materialistic want than the bodies actual craving.

But I also see makeup as a bad thing, for one thing i dont wear any make up... apart from eyeliner (thats still makeup i know). But i feel a little bit of makeup is okay instead of coating yourself in the stuff.

If self-esteem isn't, and has never been, a problem for you Kairi Star, then I applaud you. That's what I wish everyone would be like.

Unfortunately, self-esteem comes into play when a girl seeks social acceptance and is an outcast because she has a small bust, big nose, lots of acne, or another cosmetic no-no. These however (in my opinion of course) are arbitrarily defined parameters! If you look at models/actresses (I think this sociology study was done by looking at playboy centrefolds), their weight/hip size is rapidly decreasing while their bust size is growing. How is an overweight girl, with a small bust (it happens) supposed to keep up? Particularly since obesity rates are on the rise.

    ---------------

You also mentioned something interesting...cosmetics make your skin age. Why?...The same reason they put alcohol in mouth-wash: so you'll buy more mouth-wash.

It's a bit counter-intuitive, since alcohol has a lot of disinfecting properties...but Alcohol is actually the perfect breeding ground for the bacteria that cause bad breath. (If you know a chronic alcoholic, chances are they have horrid breath for this reason) So why do they say "Do not swallow mouthwash" ? Because it has alcohol in it. Why? So you get bad breath. Why? So you buy more mouthwash.

The same is true for cosmetics. There is no good reason to have such harsh chemicals in it, besides making cosmetics a necessity.

ninja-vengeance: May I ask why you feel the need to wear eyeliner? (If it's not too personal of course)

Mike you mentioned how girls see themselves as insecure for instance not liking their noses.

If you also think about make up also reduced girls wanting to have cosmetic surgery or any easier way out of that. I for one have often thought about cosmetic surgery, however there are some products which can easily hide the horendous scars which i have.

I wear eyeliner because without it I still look half asleep and people call me chinese -_- which i have nothing against being chinese, for i am asain just not chinese. But i dislike the stereotypical view of chinese people having small eyes.

afew thing got me. Makeup doesn't contribute to acne, acne is mainly due to genetics. Saying that makeup if not properly washed leads to spots.

Also Miley looks really pretty without makeup.

And you can get natural makeup, without chemicals.

I think that makeup can be use to highlite beautiful elements of a womens face(Cheekbones, jawlines, eyes etc.)

I agree with kupo on that part, minus miley.

MACs makeup doesnt damage skin, its made entirely out of minerals therefore you can even sleep with it on

Eye liner make girls eyes look bigger, that's usually the common reason.

I have had issues with self-esteem which was made me finally realise everything, which was mainly because of my hair because I got hair issues, thank god for straiteners though and my mom letting me have one. Another reason because I'm kind of quite and got pick to direct band class last year.

Alcahol actually kills germs and to a point it eats away everything, that's why people who drink alcahol have like bleeding issues. For example alcahol is in Hand Sanatizers and stuff that's the point of alcahol.

As for the chemicals and aging it's like chemicals in a cigarette. It rots away teeth, make finger nails yellow, and more. Makeup does the same just not as bad, it just gives more acne and ages skin faster.

it actually does NOT lead to acne, it can lead to spots, but acne is due to hormonal and biological matters.

Also star some makeup products such as one of Estee Lauders range helps reduce spots and removes acne. Well for me it does. Just depends what products you use.

Forgive me for saying, but doesn't it seem like your want/need/whatever for cosmetic surgery isn't lessened by using makeup? Infact, it sounds as though when you don't have makeup on, you still want the surgery...so are you sure it reduces girls dependence?

It sounds to me more like a new 'quick fix' of an old problem.

But this is peoples' ignorance dominating your life. Why not try to educate instead of playing by their rules? With asians it's even more severe than this, because some have surgery to 'make their eyelids fold' and look a bit more american. This is complete garbage!

I haven't seen any pictures of you (so don't worry I'm not a stalker lol), but I'm sure your eyes are lovely. You shouldn't hide them behind a mask, and you shouldn't play by the ignorant peoples' rules.

People call you Chinese because it's, as you said, a stereotype. Does a stereotype change what your eyes look like? No, you're doing that by yourself to fit the definition of 'beauty.'...and that's the point I'm trying to raise in this topic.

    ---------------

EDIT: You're absolutely right, that some people have a genetic predisposition to acne. Their protein markers as well as 'how much grease their face produces' are certainly genetic in nature.

However that does not mean it's the only cause...if I were to slather bacon grease on my face every day, my pores would become clogged, infected with bacteria, and I would get acne.

Makeup clogs one's pores in a similar manner and ultimately leads to more acne. The only difference is, if someone is genetically predisposed to acne, then the difference is much more obvious.

Im not afraid to go out in public without any make up, I've done it many times before. I barely ever brush my hair either.

But my point is some girls do pay attention to what others say, some get bullied for not looking good , which is just stupid tbh. One of the main causes of girls using make up is the attitudes of people towards others imperfections. Perhaps when people start changing their attitudes women will think of using less makeup.

I did say it was counter-intuitive...and I certainly don't make things up:

    http://www.therabreath.com/art_alcohol.asp
Bad Breath Remedies - Health 911
Bad breath - What causes bad breath

And actually, to be precise, drinkable alcohol is called Ethyl Alcohol (or Ethanol).

The kind in Hand Sanitizers is called Isopropyl Alcohol...which is toxic.

Both however, dry your skin...which is what is outlined in the links I pasted above, and the key to bad breath.

This is precisely my point, thank you.

Now I put to you however...do two wrongs make a right? If we keep relying on cosmetics, will people ever change their attitudes toward women?

Probably not...and that's because this is what's known to psychologists as reinforcement. If you're surrounded by something every single day, and it's accepted in society, it won't revert back.

EDIT: lol...I hit spacebar and it posted. I have a poltergeist :0

Honestly, I find alot of this stuff shallow. Like the people who put so much makeup on. And who constantly read those types of magazines and believe everything said in them. And the fact that people think they need them is rather stupid.

To me, women look better with very little makeup on compared to having too much makeup on. Too much makeup makes them start to look like... Well I'm sure you can guess at what it makes them look like.

I find the magazines useless. It is like a monopoly with the makeup companies. They find something that they don't deem normal, and then they make it so whomever has it now feels insecure. And then they advertise cosmetics for that insecurity, saying that you need it.

And self-esteem... People need to stop being so self-conscience. It is a fact of life. Not everybody is going to like you. So just get over it and go on with your life. People shouldn't care about what others think. The only exception to that would be caring what somebody special thinks. But that is it. Although I must admit, my mom hates it whenever I say that I don't care what people think.

Hmm... How to better explain. I see it as shallow because just about everybody who is shallow has their life revolving around cosmetics. True, not everybody who does these things is shallow, but just about every depiction of somebody shallow that I've seen has their life revolve around cosmetics.

Just because the majority of people you know may, doesnt make it true

I dont think its shallow to have your life revolved around cosmetics. Its just how you act upon it afterwards.

That's it. I've just noticed that (I type this as my little sister watches the Suite Life of Zack and Cody) people who's life revolves around cosmetics tend to be shallow people or something. Kinda like a kid from a rich family that got spoiled his/her entire life.

Using London Tipton as an example isnt a fair example -_- since her character is meant to portay the view your trying to explain. And during the series of suite life you will see the level of shallowness slowly drops.

All I know is that you take a typical person, and they know far too much about celebrities and not enough about themselves...that's what magazines are doing wrong.
