Holding My Last Breath

Tom was walking through the hospital, looking at a patient's chart. He passed by some guy wearing sunglasses talking on a cell phone. Tom happened to find Tyler standing at a nurse's station. "New guy." He said to Tyler. "I have a patient for you." He handed Tyler the chart. "She's about your age. Movie star. She's been diagnosed with leukemia." Tom grabbed Tyler's coat collar and pulled him away. "She's in this room." He didn't point out a specific room. Just dragged Tyler to it.

A nurse stopped walking as Tom and Tyler passed by. "Sir. The board of directors are having a meeting. They need to see you now."

"Later." Tom said.

"So should I tell them you aren't going?"

"Sure. If you want. Fine by me."

Van leaned against Bernadette's Lamborghini with a cigarette in between his lips, emotionless, as always.

Bernadette, frantically pacing beside Van, was on her cellphone, trying to get Alexis's Agent on the line.
"No answer." Bernadette said with her teeth clenched, frustrated.

"Baby, Babe, calm down. You're too uptight, Berny."

"Van! Don't just stand there like a damn emotionless Vampire, can't you even feel a little freakin' sympathetic??!"

There was along silence.


"I... I'm sorry, Babe." Van said, spitting out his cigarette as he walked over to Bernadette as his arms were thrown out for a hug.
"Is there anything you need?"

"Yeah, I need... to go into... the... hospittlwe..." Bernadette tried to say as Van massaged her back.

"It's called a 'Hospital', Hun." Van laughed at her mispronunciation.


"Alright, I'm going in." Bernadette said.

"I'll come too."

When she finally made it to the floor Alexis was on, she noticed her Agent walk out on his phone, and the nurse say it was the end of visiting hours.

"Damn, we're too late." Bernadette told Van.

 

Haden sat up in the bed in the corner of the senior staff rec room. He rubbed his temples trying to pull out of the daze he gets in after he has a mid-day siesta. He lay back down, his legs hanging over the side of the top bunk. He had entered the stage of no return. The point where your neither sleeping or awake.

'Beeezzzz... Bezzzz....Bezzzz'. Haden began slapping the air to his right. Once he realized it was not his alarm, but his pager he leaped from the bed. When it came to working he could not afford mistakes, he must always he alert. Taking a row of pills from his pocket he dry swallowed one. He walked to where his pager sounded from.

After the annoyance of being dragged around the hospital Tyler fixed his collar and began looking at the patient chart he had been handed.

"A leukaemia patient huh" Tyler continued looking at the chart. He looked at the patient in the bed and froze.

"It can't be!" Tyler couldn't believe, checking the name on the chart just confirmed his suspicion.

"Alexis Reed!?" Tyler couldn't believe it, His high school love, in his hospital.

Tyler's entire body began surging with feelings, anger because she had left him, happiness for seeing her again and last regret, she was in the hospital, diagnosed with leukaemia.

Tyler feeling overwhelmed called an intern and told him to take care of her for now.
Walking to the counter he decided now would be a good time for him to head home, somewhere he hadn't been for the last three days. He had alot to think about.

Kate looked at Tyler. She took the file.

"Hey wasn't Alexis that one girl from highschool?" Kate asked more so in a whisper, she walked into the room. She was right it was Alexis.

"Oh!" Kate exclaimed then focus.

"Alexis Reed? I'm doctor Kate Lee I'm your doctor's intern. I'd like to speak to you before jumping to any conclusion." Kate told her. She walked over and sat down at a computer on the counter.

"Do you have a family mediacal history, meaning anyone else with leukimia and other types of health problems like cancer?" Kate asked.


OOC: dang having to go to the hospital emergency room once a year I actually memoriezed all the questions they ask plus due to being with my great grandfather when he was asked a bunch of questions

After seeing Tyler leave his new patient to an intern, Tom laughed to himself. He could tell that Tyler was going to leave for home, and that was a good thing. He glanced at his watch. "Damn... Nothing else to do but go to that board meeting." He walked through the hospital to the meeting room.

He got in the room. "You're late." The board members said.

"Yes, I'm aware of that. But I was doing something more important. See, we doctors help people. Helping people comes before buisness."

One of the members laughed. "I love the way you talk to us, even though we have the power to fire you."

"Yes, I'm aware of that. But I'm also aware that you're not gonna fire me." Tom said.

"And why's that?"

"Because we all know I'm the best doctor in this place." Everybody in the room knew that. And that made Tom invaluable to the hospital. "So instead of arguing, how about we get this meeting over with?"

 

Bernadette met with Tyler's eyes, "Wait, Van, hold on a second. I'll be right back..." She said walking slowly over to Tyler.

"My, oh, my." Bernadette smiled. "Tyler Dydan, what are you doing working as a doctor?"

Bernadette hadn't seen Tyler since high-school, and since his 20th birthday she was invited to.

 

The needle was shaky in her hand. She had done this many times before, but this time it was different. She didn't know what it was that made it different. Slowly she lowered the needle to the bulging vein in her left forearm. She took a deep breath in and stabbed the needle in, looking away as she push the fluid into her body.

Everything felt fine for a moment or two, but the she began to feel really really ill. This scared Carmen as this had never happened before. She began to run to the bathroom, which was belonged as a en suite to her uncle's bedroom. He wasn't prepared for her to come those years ago. And despite having a large pent house apartment, it only had one bathroom.

As she was at the door she twisted the handle slamming into her uncle, who had just come out the shower, a towel around his waist.

' Carmen whats wrong?' He asked.
The life drained from her face as she feel to the floor convolving.

"Sixteen year old female, cardiac arrest." The paramedic said as he wheeled the stretcher into the hospital. "Will she be okay?" Dan asked panic stricken. He wore a bathrobe over his boxers as he didn't have time to get dressed.

 

Berny? Tyler thought to himself, he wasn't to sure to start with, he hadn't seen her since high school.

"Here to see Alexis?" Tyler asked, "Visiting hours are finished so you should come back tomorrow"

"Iv got to go I might see you tomorrow" Tyler got into his car that was parked in his reserved spot close to the hospital doors.

After arriving home Tyler grabbed a quick shower and then sat in his living room with the TV on, he wasn't particularly watching anything just the noise and the movement was distracting enough. Tyler was trying to decided what to do about Alexis, he hadn't seen her in years and now she was his patient. Tyler was only sure of one thing, the next few weeks would be very interesting.
